SYRACUSE , N.Y. (NCC News) —
For years, food options have been minimal for residents of Syracuse’s south side. But in early February, things changed. Dollar General opened a DG Market on 2711 South Salinas Street offering fresh produce, fresh meats, dairy products, home decor, clothes, toiletries and more. Many members of the community were very pleased with this.
One member, Andre Smith, says this is a big step forward and helps a lot of people save money. This is because they used to get their groceries by ordering them on Instacart, or driving out of their community and burning gas. In addition, the specific location of the market is perfect as it is right next to a bus stop.
Ramika Thomas says this is extremely beneficial and practical for the elderly as they can just get off the bus, pick up their groceries, and get right back on the bus. The surrounding areas are full of elderly homes and a dominant elderly population.
One final perk of the new DG Market opening is that all schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations within a 15 mile radius will qualify for the opportunity to apply for grants through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Hopefully this is just the beginning, and in the coming months more and more food stores will be developed the south side of Syracuse.
