SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — In 1926 Roderick Burlingame opened Drumlins Country Club.
Drumlins has a deep history in Central New York, the Clubhouse originally was built from Burlingame’s barn.
They now house two eighteen-hole golf courses, head golf pro Sean Dadey says it started as a small family course.
“Started it as a family-friendly recreational facility. So, in the summer he developed there was a single golf course, and they had other summer activities.”
CNY golf courses have a smaller golf season because snow can fall as early as October.
Drumlins adapted various winter activities to stay open year-round, Dadley discussed some of the original winter activities Burlingame added to the club.
“Activities to sustain it in the offseason….is there’s an oval speed skating, interior, ice rink, and then they had like a rope tow. It’s so downhill skiing and probably a little cross-country.”
“In the winter they had bowling, there were bowling alleys here, they had parties throughout, you know, social aspects throughout the probably year, year-round.”
The clubhouse has preserved the history of Drumlins by showcasing old wedding pictures of the Burlingame’s, course photos, and winter skating photos.
The original University Room housed their employees back and the day, there were dorms and showers according to Dadey.
Drumlins is now under the Ownership of Syracuse University, adding a driving range, tennis courts, swimming pools, and a banquet hall.
After all this time the original 1926 barn continues to be in use.
