NICKI COX: It’s the time of year for candidates to answer community questions before Election Day. NCC News’s Moriah Humiston reports on why answering these questions is important for democracy.
HUMISTON 1: With election voting starting soon, Syracuse’s councilor at large candidates held a forum for the Syracuse community to ask questions about their ideas last night. Candidate Thomas Babilon says that these forums are helpful for any community to get information on their candidates.
BABILON 1: “People don’t know who the candidates are, they don’t know who to vote for. A lot of people don’t know when the election is. I think it’s important to get the candidates’ views out there, to get them publicized. Let people know that there is an election coming up and these are the people that you have an opportunity to vote for.”
HUMISTON 2: Syracuse League of Women Voters member Joan Johnson says that the league puts on the forum because it is important for democracy.
JOHNSON 1: “People have to know the candidates, they have to do their homework. Democracy isn’t easy, you have to get involved.”
HUMISTON 3: Election Day is Tuesday, November fifth but early voting for the 20-19 election will begin this Saturday and continue until November third. Moriah Humiston, N-C-C News.
