Syracuse N.Y. (NCC NEWS)- The Central New York Regional Market will be closed on weekdays after next Thursday. The market was open Thursday but saw very little business throughout the day. Linda Hahn, a worker for Hahn Farm, blames the season and the fact that it is a weekday for slow business.
“Thursdays are very slow, but during May its pretty decent,” said Hahn.
Vendors can lose up to 80 percent of their business during the fall months said vendor Matt Hoxie. He says to get by he has to budget right, but stick with what he knows best- the farmers market.
“I’ve been here since I was a kid and for some of us it’s all we know how to do,” said Hoxie, who is a vendor for MNS produce, but closed shop today because of a lack of customers.
The Central New York Regional Market has a rich history. It opened in 1938 and has been renovated twice — in the 1990s and in 2013. Now, the market has six sheds, all of which can host several vendors and hundreds of customers.
The market also serves people living in poverty.
“The EBT program which is like a food stamps program has really picked up as of late,” said Hoxie. “I think a lot of the lower class are able to get down here and get fresh fruits and vegetables.”
Market vendors tend to see more customers in the market on weekdays. The market is open Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 2 pm.
