End of Season Means Slow Business for CNY Regional Market End of Season Means Slow Business for CNY Regional Market

Syracuse N.Y.  (NCC NEWS)- The Central New York Regional Market will be closed on weekdays after next Thursday. The market was open Thursday but saw very little business throughout the day. Linda Hahn, a worker for Hahn Farm, blames the season and the fact that it is a weekday for slow business.

“Thursdays are very slow, but during May its pretty decent,” said Hahn.

Vendors can lose up to 80 percent of their business during the fall months said vendor Matt Hoxie. He says to get by he has to budget right, but stick with what he knows best- the farmers market.

“I’ve been here since I was a kid and for some of us it’s all we know how to do,” said Hoxie, who is a vendor for MNS produce, but closed shop today because of a lack of customers.

The Central New York Regional Market has a rich history. It opened in 1938  and has been renovated twice —  in the 1990s and in 2013. Now, the market has six sheds, all of which can host several vendors and hundreds of customers.

The market also serves people living in poverty.

“The EBT program which is like a food stamps program has really picked up as of late,” said Hoxie. “I think a lot of the lower class are able to get down here and get fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Market vendors tend to see more customers in the market on weekdays. The market is open Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 2 pm.

Dan Harty: The Central New York Market was open Thursday, but saw very little business. Next week is the last week they’ll be open on Thursdays. We go live to reporter Doug Cortese who explains why business is so slow.

Doug Cortese: I’m outside the regional market where about an hour ago vendors wrapped up the second to last weekday farmers market of the season. Only a handful of customers shopped at today’s farmers market. This time of year vendors can lose up to 80 percent of their business, including vendor Matt Hoxie.

Matt Hoxie: It tappers off especially Thursdays unfortunately they get really quiet really fast. May and June is really good and then its kind of down hill from there.

Doug Cortese: The market vendors tend to see more business over the weekend. They are open 7:00 am to 2:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. Reporting live from the Central New York Regional Market, Doug Cortese, NCC news.
