SUNY Oswego Hosts Event For New Americans New American Event Informs Business On How To Be More Inclusive

SARAL KHARE: Today SUNY Oswego hosts an event to talk about what businesses can do to make New American Refugee’s more safe and what refugee’s can do to assimilate to America better.

KHARE: TruCare Connections Director Of Business Development Jay Subedi talks about what he wants to educate new Americans about.

JAY SUBEDI: It is very important for our immigrants and New Americans population to educate ourself on what would be the job and employment look like in America.

KHARE: Subedi talked about how the skills immigrants learned in their home country don’t necessarily translate here.
So it’s important for immigrants to adapt.

SUBEDI: The rules, the regulations, the laws all of those soft skills as well as how we can work our what are the policies and rules we have to follow to have the employment.

KHARE: Suny Oswego Professor Dr.Sandra Bagainnier said it’s important for refugee to speak out against mistreatment in the workplace.

SANDRA BARGAINNIER: First I would ask them if they could speak to their supervisor directly in a private setting if they’re comfortable doing that but if the problem is the supervisor maybe go above that level

KHARE: Bargainnier talks about what employers can do to create a safe work environment for people with different backgrounds.

BARGAINNIER: I would always recommend that employees employers speak to the employees, speak to the stakeholders, don’t try to guess or make assumptions about what your workers need

KHARE: My main takeaway from the New Americans event was that in order for New Americans to feel comfortable in the workplace New Americans and employers are going to have to understand each other and from understanding each other it’ll make much more for a diverse and productive workplace

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News)– The New Americans event took place on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at The Atrium. SUNY Oswego hosted the event talking about how businesses can be more inclusive to New American refugees. There were people from a variety of organizations speaking: SUNY Oswego, TruCare Connections and Center for Court Innovation.

Two speakers from the event were Jay Subedi, Director of Business Development for TruCare Connections, and Sandra Bargainer, a Professor at SUNY-Oswego. In the event the importance of refugee’s feeling safe in the workplace was mentioned by other speakers.

Bargainnier wants employers to make sure they’re doing that.

“Don’t try to guess or make assumptions about what you’re workers need to feel safe,” said Bargainnier. “Ask them.”

A lot of times when immigrants come here the skills they learned in their home country doesn’t necessarily transfer over to America. Subedi had a similar incident when he came to America.

“Like I was a teacher back in Nepal,” said Subedi. “But I started working here from Subways cleaning the dishes.”

Subedi knows that immigrants can work in America they just need a chance to adapt.

“We can do the job, but it takes time to learn about the American culture,” said Subedi. “The system, the policies, the way it works.”

In addition, he said there are opportunities in Syracuse to be trained to work.

“The colleges are starting up, the universities are starting up, the local agencies are training them,” said Subedi.

Overall, Subedi felt honored speaking at the event.

“I felt honor being there because we as a New American forum we speak about many nations community around here and we help them,” said Subedi.  “It was a great experience for us to tell the public what we do and where we came from.”
