JORDAN: A local art museum is celebrating the holidays with elaborate displays of Christmas trees. NCC News’s Shayna Lakin is live in studio to break down this holiday season staple.

LAKIN: The Everson Museum of Art is helping Central New Yorkers get into the holiday spirit with their thirty-eighth annual Festival of Trees and Light. The museum has displays of Christmas trees, wreaths, and other holiday decorations as well as an artisan market selling handmade gifts for the holidays. Chairperson of the festival, Lizabeth Herrick says the local community is what makes the festival so special.

HERRICK: Overall, what I enjoy seeing are the connections that the community makes when they walk in the door.

LAKIN: Herrick says the festival relies heavily on the work of volunteers to set up and run the displays.

HERRICK: I am here for a full week before it opens with lots of volunteers doing the set up.

LAKIN: The Festival of Trees and Light will be open until December sixteenth so there is still time to celebrate this local holiday tradition. Reporting live in studio, Shayna Lakin, NCC News.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Everson Museum of Art is hosting their 38th annual Festival of Trees and Light this holiday season. While the museum has displays of Christmas trees and wreaths, the festival also celebrates local musical groups by inviting them to perform.

The museum will typically host between 40 and 50 different performance groups throughout the duration of the festival. Thursday night, the museum will host Acapella Night where local high school, college, and adult acapella groups will be performing.

Festival Chairperson, Lizabeth Herrick, says the festival also offers a winter art studio where drop-in art activities are offered for busy families.

“Everybody’s schedule is different. It’s hard to actually register for a particular time. This way people can come in, the materials are all here, there’s instructions and families can do something together,” Herrick said.

The Festival of Trees and Light began as a fundraiser for the Everson Museum’s programs in 1985 but Herrick says the festival is more than just a fundraiser today.

“We are also what we call a ‘friend’-raiser. So we bring in probably between four and five thousand people during the two weeks. They are both the performers, we have a lot of dance groups that come in and do recitals, and then all of the people who are our visitors who come in to enjoy either the entertainment, the dance recitals and, of course, the festival itself,” Herrick said.

The Festival of Trees and Light will be open to visitors until December 16, and will include performances, crafts, and decorations for the whole family this holiday season.
