Explainer: Driving In Construction Zones Construction Worker Safety

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – –  State police conducted  “Operation Hard Hat'” in Onondaga County, along with other counties around the state in the past few weeks. The Department of Transportation  was trying to crack down on work zone violations by motorists.

Members of the New York State Police Troop D patrolled works zones in different parts of  the county issuing tickets  for speeding, seat belt violations, use of cell-phone while driving, work zone intrusion, and driving while intoxicated. Troopers were also on the lookout for motorists who were violating the Move Over Law, which has to do with emergency and work vehicles.

“The success of Operation Hard Hat is imperative,” said State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. “It protects our transportation workers and raises awareness to the serious issue of work zone safety. This is an important partnership that we need to continue to further promote our shared mission of highway safety.”

The state police issued 102 tickets during the operation:

  • 62 for speeding
  • 20 for other infractions
  • 16 for failure to wear seat belts
  • 3 for cell phone use
  • 2 for expired inspections
  • 1 driving while impaired.

Construction and maintenance crews across New York work along fast-paced traffic each day. State officials say it’s critical for motorists to pay attention to the roads, not get distracted on their phones, and move over lanes when they see construction.
