SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Food Bank of Central New York is going to receive $2,000 to $3,000 in approximately three weeks that will help with food distribution to food pantries and soup kitchens. The money is coming from a portion of ticket sales from Syracuse Fashion Week, which is a three-day fashion show.
The Chief Development Officer at the Food Bank, Lynn Hy, said distribution isn’t the only place that the money is needed but the most prominent.
“When funds come in, we kind of look and say, ‘do we need to use this money for purchasing food, to keep our fleet of vehicles because we travel about 300,030 miles every year,” Hy said. “Funds that will come in from Syracuse Fashion Week will go towards any of those projects.”
For every dollar that is donated to the Food Bank, they can provide enough food for three meals. Hy said that this money could also go towards their nutrition education because while she thinks it is important to feed people, she wants to help them eat healthier as well.
Since 2014, Syracuse Fashion Week has helped the Food Bank distribute 40,000 meals. Executive Director for Syracuse Fashion Week, Lisa Butler, decided to donate to the Food Bank because she said just like clothing, food is a necessity.
“From its inception, I knew that I wanted to partner with a charitable organization, I kind of looked around and I loved the work that the Food Bank was doing,” Butler said. “Food and fashion, those are things people need to wear clothes, they need to eat.”
The Food Bank of Central New York serves 178,000 New Yorkers across 11 counties and every year 1,000 people volunteer to work at the Food Bank. Hy said that without these volunteers the food bank wouldn’t be able to do what it does.
“They give up themselves and their time to help out, so we could get that [food] back out in the community and get it into the hands of people that are struggling with hunger, ” Hy said.
The Food Bank hopes that by 2022, the Syracuse Fashion Show will have helped them feed 50,000 people.
Throughout the year there will be opportunities to donate to the Food Bank. The next opportunity is Oct. 23 at Green Lakes State Park where there will be hayrides and a corn maze along with other Halloween-themed activities. The event is free but they recommend that you bring a non-perishable food item or donate money to the Food Bank.
