First Revamped Thruway Rest Area Opens — What’s Next? First Revamped Thruway Rest Area Opens

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — Drivers on the New York State Thruway may notice some changes.

Some revamped locations have opened as construction continues on the service area redevelopment project. Last week, the Chittenango service area in Canastota reopened. The Indian Castle rest area also reopened between Utica and Albany.

27 more rest stop doors are expected to open later this month. The new rest areas will include updated food options like Chick-fil-A, Panera Bread, Popeyes, Panda Express and the first Shake Shack in Upstate New York.

According to its contract, the consortium will operate and improve the rest areas for the next 33 years at no cost to state taxpayers.
