SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) — Since 2012, Syracuse has installed nearly 50 free little libraries in and around the city. The little libraries are free neighborhood book exchanges aimed at providing convenience and building community. The libraries are scattered all around local neighborhoods.
Carol Johnson, manager of Petit Branch Library, says the libraries have expanded access to books across the community.
“I think it’s very valuable. I know there are people, for whatever reason, who don’t manage to make it to the library, so I think it’s like super convenient for people who are out for a walk. Especially for little kids, I think it’s a treat,” said Johnson.
The libraries were started in 2009 by Todd Bol and Rick Brooks in Hudson Wisconsin. There are now over 150,000 little free libraries across the world according to their website.
This summer, learn-to-quilt-kits will be place in some of the libraries around the city. This interactive art project aims to introduce people to quilting and increase community engagement. Visit the little free library website or download the mobile app to find the nearest location.
