By CJ Santosuosso Syracuse, N.Y. (NCC News) – Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Syracuse today and she said that she is in favor of the street-level community grid as a replacement option for the elevated portion of Interstate 81.
The remarks came today during a meeting between Gillibrand, and reporters and producers from syracuse.com and The Syracuse Post-Standard, according to syracuse.com.
For Gillibrand, she becomes one of the highest profile politicians to announce their stance on the issue.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, has not revealed what he thinks about the issue – but he has said he will support what the community decides.
Rep. John Katko, R-Camillus, who is currently running for reelection, has also not revealed his stance on how to handle 81. He has also said he believes that decision should be up to local residents.
Newly named Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon has said he is in favor of a new tunnel or rebuilt viaduct instead of the community grid option.
But for Gillibrand, she says her decision comes after meeting with members of the community.
“Given where the stakeholders are – and given what I have heard from the community in the last several years – I really think the community grid is a better approach to not only revitalization, but to support all members of our community,” said Gillibrand, according to syracuse.com.
The community grid would cost about $1.3 billion, and the tunnel would cost about $1.7 billion, according to studies conducted by New York State about the interstate.
Gillibrand is currently running for reelection. She is opposed by Republican Chele Farley.
Gillibrand has been Senator since 2010.
