MANHATTAN, N.Y. (NCC News) – New York State Governor Kathy Hocul announced today that 18,000 jobs with nearly 400 employers will be available to both asylum seekers and migrants. This is part of a state wide initiative to move individuals out of shelter and into independent living, according to the Governor.

“Migrants and asylum seekers came here to work — so let’s put them to work,” said Hochul.

This all comes after New York City alone has seen an influx of 125,000 migrants. Hochul’s office said around 11,000 new jobs will created in and around New York City.

45 percent of the new jobs will be in the Accommodation, Food Services, Healthcare, and Social Assistance industries. Hochul stated she is focusing on securing work status for migrants and asylum seekers.

“Right now, we have a migrant crisis and a workforce crisis. By connecting work-eligible individuals with jobs and opportunity in New York, we can solve them both and secure a brighter future for all New Yorkers,” said Hochul.

Migrants and asylum seekers have Back on August 24th, the Governor directed New York State’s Department of Labor to find out what job openings could be filled by migrants and asylum seekers, according to the Governor.
