“When we walked back in the house, we just realized ‘oh, life can be short,’ and just to be thankful for what you have and stuff like that.”

No civilians or firefighters were injured during the event, but a family dog lost its life. Investigators are still working to find the cause of the fire. Tony Shaw, NCC News.

SYRACUSE, NY (NCC News) –  Firefighters arrived at Ackerman Avenue to the scene of two houses on fire. The sounds of fire trucks driving by and the smell of fire alerted those who live in the neighborhood. Christian Curti is a nearby neighbor to the two houses that caught fire.

Curti was taking a nap when the chaos began.

“Woke up to the sounds of fire trucks zooming down my street for about 15 minutes and smelled a pretty strong scent of fire,” Curti said. “Looking out my window I saw a massive black cloud of smoke blowing over the street from a couple houses down the road.”

The large black cloud of smoke was seen by one of Curti’s roommate’s, Julio Fulcar. Fulcar was not aware of the situation at hand when he first saw the smoke in the air.

“I had never seen that before, and it was kind of scary honestly,” Fulcar said.

Fellow housemate of Curti and Fulcar, Camden Holbrook, was alerted by the smell of fire. Holbrook and his roommates walked over to the houses on fire to see what was going on.

“There was a ladder going up to the room where it was just covered in black smoke. You could barely see the flashlight with the fire fighter inside the room,” Holbrook said.

They said that they learned a lesson that day.

“When we walked back in the house, we just realized ‘Oh, life can be short,’ and just to be thankful for what you have and stuff like that,” Holbrook said.
