Hypnotist Offers to Help Smokers Break the Habit One Hypnotist is Offering a Discount for Smoke Cessation Services

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — The Great American Smokeout is on Thursday, Nov. 18,  and one hypnotist in Syracuse is discounting services in an effort to get more people to quit permanently.

The American Cancer Association recognizes The Great American Smokeout as a day where smokers across the country are encouraged to quit smoking for at least 24 hours.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

Joshua Kirnie has been a hypnotist since 2009 and a Director of Alternative Hypnosis in Syracuse since 2012.

“We see generally, very generally speaking, an average between six and 12 smokers a week,” Kirnie said. “That number is down, luckily many people aren’t smoking right now, as much as they were when I first started and back then, we would see dozens of people a week.”

Kirnie said he helps people from coast to coast break the addiction through in-person and virtual hypnosis sessions.

According to the CDC, about one out of every five adults die from smoking every year. Kirnie said not every smoker is considered “hypnotizable.”

“We want to make sure that they are comfortable in following instructions,” Kirnie said.

While some smokers require licensed psychologists or doctors for support with breaking the addiction, Kirnie and his colleagues analyze each prospective client to determine if they are a good fit for the hypnosis treatment.

Debrah Kelly became a Certified Hypnotist three years ago and works with Kirnie in Syracuse.

“A lot of clients become addicted because they watched people in their life that they have a lot of respect for like their parents or an older sibling smoke and then as they get older and they observe these people in these stressful situations smoking, they take on the habit as well,” Kelly said.

Kirnie said more than half of the smokers who go to Alternative Hypnosis for help quit after the first hypnosis session. And for those who don’t, Kirnie said most smokers do not need more than three hypnosis sessions in order to break the habit.

“Normally when they come in, they are very motivated to quit smoking because they are currently experiencing some sort of negative health effect from that” Kelly said. “Whether it be they actually come in with Cancer or they come in with an oxygen tank or they are just starting to have breathing problems and other issues.”

Based on observation, Kelly said most clients come into Alternative Hypnosis after witnessing a loved one who is becoming very ill from smoking begin to deteriorate, which then motivates smokers to take action for their own health before it’s too late.
