Adults with Disabilities Hangout offers a safe space to relax

Drew VonScio: The Liverpool Library hosted an adults with disabilities event today, creating representation for different communities. The event looks to facilitate group activities such as crafting, video and board games. Event coordinator Edina Osmanovic said the two hour event represents an environment where disabled individuals can participate in enjoyable activities.

Edina Osmanovic: We’ve noticed that we have a lot of people within that community coming into the library so we want to make sure they have a space for themselves, we want to make sure that we’re doing things to make them feel comfortable, to include them in things.

Drew VonScio: This program has been in action for over two years, and has 50 people in attendance every second Monday of each month.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The Liverpool Public Library holds regular events for the community, including several for adults with disabilities.

The Adults with Disabilities Hangout provides a safe, comfortable space for people to come together.

Attendees are free to work on crafts, read or simply hangout, as the event’s name implies. About 50 people attend every other Monday.

Event coordinator Edina Osmanovic said adults with disabilities are often regulars at the library, and the events are a way to bring people together.

“We want to make sure that they have a space for themselves, we want to make sure that we’re doing things to make them feel comfortable and to include them,” Osmanovic said.

In addition to the hangout event, the library has held Adults with Disabilities Craft Days, and has an Adults with Disabilities Read-A-Loud scheduled for June 24.
