With the Fall in full swing and Halloween quickly approaching, the Syracuse community is looking to get into the holiday spirit. This month, The Buried Acorn Brewing Taproom & Eats is hosting carving event with a little twist.
NCC News’ Miles Walker went down to East Fayette Street to learn more about how the local bar is embracing the season.
With the holiday season nearing its arrival, Buried Acorn Brewing hopes to not only appeal to the children and families of Syracuse, but to also reignite the childhood joy that was once so present in Syracuse University students. The local bar not only offers a myriad of beer choices, but also incorporates pumpkin carving along with a Halloween costume contest, hobbies anyone of any age can hopefully enjoy.
Bryan: “Well I definitely feel like carving pumpkins is pretty fun. I did that two summers ago and I made pumpkin soup last year, so getting into the theme, so yeah.”
The hope for Buried Acorn Brewing along with its bar manager Alex Pilger is to create an environment where anyone in Syracuse can feel comfortable embracing the holiday season, regardless of one’s background. For Pilger, there’s nothing more gratifying than creating such a space for the whole community to enjoy.
Alex Pilger: “Learning new things, being in new places, learning different cultures has gotta be really exciting and to see why we love it. You know, all the excitement for them to come in and look and see people dressed up having a good time. It makes them think, ‘we should get into that, that looks like a lot of fun.”
Pilger also made sure to mention that the owners Tim and Crystal Shore-who are parents themselves—are the ones who deserve credit for the idea.
Pilger: “The whole October Halloween thing. They have kids, they love to be able to get involved with their kids, pumpkin carving and all that stuff. It’s just a way to get people engaged and around here, especially when you have a pumpkin beer, why not have a pumpkin to be able to offer to be able to you feel like a kid and drink beer out of it.”
If you want a chance to carve out your Halloween pumpkin and enjoy a nice beverage, Buried Acorn Brewing will be holding its pumpkin carving event from 11:30 A-M until 11 at night through the remainder of October. Reporting from Syracuse, I’m Miles Walker. NCC News.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) — As Buried Acorn Brewing continues its third straight year hosting a pumpkin carving event–along with the opportunity to fill your own personal pumpkin with the beer of your choosing–the local Syracuse bar looks to take advantage of their new location on East Fayette Street.
Given the fact that Buried Acorn Brewing is right around the corner from Theory Syracuse–an apartment complex known for traditionally housing Syracuse University students–the company has high hopes of drawing attention from the college student population. However, for some SU students like Bryan, an international student from China, this may prove to be more difficult than expected.
“My friend group doesn’t really celebrate Halloween,” Bryan said. “We considered dressing this year, but still haven’t really made plans.”
There seems to be something missing for college students nowadays when it comes to Halloween. So, Buried Acorn Brewing came up with a solution.
Although Buried Acorn Brewing’s goal with the pumpkin carving is to reawaken the holiday spirit throughout Syracuse, its goal is to also appeal to the older population present in the CNY area. Now, not only can a college senior enjoy a beer with his carved-out pumpkin, you can also participate in the bar’s Halloween costume contest. Although the costume contest did not seem to impress Bryan, hopefully the pumpkin carving will peak his interest.
“Well, I definitely feel like carving pumpkins is pretty fun,” Bryan said. “I did that two summers ago and I made pumpkin soup last year, so getting the theme (Halloween).”
This is the aspect to the pumpkin carving event that excites people like Alex Pilger–the bar manager over at Buried Acorn Brewing. The prospect behind introducing a holiday into someone’s life drives him–along with the rest of their staff–to put together a great event for the season.
“Learning new things, being in new places,” Pilger said. “Learning different cultures has got to be really exciting and you see why we love it. You know, all the excitement for them (international students) to come in and look and see people dressed up having a good time. It makes them think, ‘we should get into that, that looks like a lot of fun.'”
