Local Restaurant Not Worried About Competition with Large Chain Local Restaurant not Worried About Competition With Large Chain

EMILY SHIROFF: “Papa Gallo Mexican Restaurant located on West Genessee Street in Fayetteville has been serving up margaritas and authentic Mexican food for over 15 years. But just down the street, Towne Center is getting a new tenant: Chipotle. Papa Gallo’s owner Mark Getman is taking a positive approach to the situation.”

MARK GETMAN: “I’m the type of guy that’ll clap for anybody. I want to see everybody be successful in some capacity. I hope they do well. I think they will do well.”

SHIROFF: “Despite the threat that large businesses like Chipotle can impose on smaller ones like Papa Gallo, owner Mark Getman is not concerned for the future of his restaurant.”

GETMAN: “We’re kind of- I understand we’re the same food, but we’re two different- two different experiences. You know, casual sit down, have a few drinks here where Chipotle is more people that are on the go. And I’m happy. I’m happy the whole area is being developed. We’ve got the Tully’s moving in across the street. Again, more foot traffic is better for us.”

SHIROFF: “The construction on the new Chipotle is nearly complete. An opening date hasn’t yet been announced but it’s still peace … love … and tacos over at Papa Gallo.”

GETMAN: “The more thing people have to do, the more people come to Fayetteville. Maybe somebody who’s coming to Chipotle drives by and says, ‘Oh my God, I love Mexican food. Let’s check them out.’”

SHIROFF: “In Fayetteville, Emily Shiroff, N-C-C News.”

FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. (NCC News) —Papa Gallo, located on West Genessee street in Fayetteville, has been a community staple since 2007. Beloved by the community, the restaurant managed to make it out of the pandemic even stronger with the help of takeout and delivery apps.

However, the joint will face their first bout of competition shortly; in a shopping center right down the street, a new Chipotle will be opening soon.

Small businesses being run into the ground was an unfortunately common occurrence throughout the pandemic. Despite the threat that large chains pose to small businesses, Mark Getman, the owner of Papa Gallo, is not concerned about his new neighbor.

“I understand we’re the same food, but we’re two different experiences,” said Getman of the difference between the two restaurants. “Casual sit down, have a few drinks here where Chipotle is kind of more on the go.”

Because of these differences, Getman also said that he doesn’t think that one business will necessarily take customers from the other. Getman said he thinks it will be a more day-to-day situation, depending on what someone is in the mood for.

Even though Chipotle is undoubtedly competition, Getman is still wishing them the best as fellow business owners.

“I’m the type of guy that’ll clap for anybody. I want to see everybody be successful,” said Getman. “I hope they do well. I think they will do well.”

While an opening date has yet to be announced for the Fayetteville Chipotle location, construction is nearly complete and the location is hiring, per a sign in front of the construction site.

In the meantime, patrons can support Papa Gallo by dining in or ordering takeout.
