According to a survey from InsuranceQuotes, an insurance comparison company, one in twelve Americans has had a package stolen from their home. In the Syracuse area it seems as though this isn’t true. The town of Manlius in particular has experienced nearly no recorded package theft. The Manlius Police Department doesn’t keep records of package theft, but a spokesperson from the department said she can recall one report within the last few years.
Scott Kingsley, a Manlius resident for almost two decades, says he has no fear of packages being stolen off his porch.
He says his son who lives in New York City has had multiple packages stolen from his apartment, but because of the area Kingsley lives in, he is not concerned about that issue.
“We live in a pretty safe community. It’s a very residential area and I think if there was a lot of activity that was outside of the norm people would call you and tell you I saw some strange things going on at your house,” he said.
“During Christmas time the post office guy actually came around the corner and dropped them off inside the main door,” he said.
Another Manlius resident, Marissa Gates, says she feels safe in Manlius, but thinks it’s important to take the extra precaution and protect her house with a security doorbell.
“We could somewhat track down who stole a package if it were to happen. It’s just a little thing, but it makes me feel better,” she says.
The surveillance doorbell sends video of who is at the door to the homeowner’s phone. Gates recalls one time when she slipped on the stairs of her front porch and a video capturing it was sent to her phone shortly after. Gates says a bonus is that it functions as more than just security.
“The doorbell is helpful when you aren’t home too because you can see who is at the door from your phone,” she said.
