SYRACUSE N.Y. (NCC News) – Syracuse University students have started moving in for the fall semester. The move-in process looks a little different this year due to rising COVID-19 numbers.

Revolving elevators, carrying carts, free cookies, and souvenir cups are what the Campus West, on-campus apartments, had to greet and welcome students who were moving in.

Community assistant Veronica Devries said as COVID numbers rise, there is a lot of uncertainty about wearing masks in the complex.

“For us, it is a little bit of a grey area. It’s like the university wants it, but then the company that owns us is like isn’t as strict about it,” Devries said.

She said she wears a mask because move-in day consists of many new people in the building, and she doesn’t even want to catch a cold. Devries said she suggests those who are moving in to mask up to keep themselves and others safe.

Syracuse University law student and new move-in Leah Wilck said it’s essential to wear a mask, especially during events like move-in day.

“You should never want to intentionally harm someone else. So that like you know by not wearing a mask, even if you are vaccinated you can still carry it and give it to other people,” Wilck said.

Wilck said she appreciated how clean her apartment was and smelt when she walked in. She said she could tell the Campus West staff took time to make things sanitary. She also said she took note of staff wearing masks, and she liked that.

Wilck said she looks forward to staying in a COVID safe environment like Campus West and encourages masking for everyone’s safety.
