DETROIT (NCC) – The re-opening of salons and other beauty businesses in Michigan has not caused a spike in Coronavirus cases. On July 5th, the state reported its first day of zero deaths since March.

Scott Foltz, a metro-Detroit salon owner, has generally felt safe when he has been at work. Oakland County sent him and other beauticians a box full of PPE materials as well as guides for preventing virus spread in the workplace.

“I feel very safe at work,” Foltz said. “I clean before every client, wear a mask, [and wash] my hands a million times.”

To his knowledge, Foltz doesn’t know of any colleagues or clients who have tested positive for COVID-19 because of a haircut. Salons have been opened for over a month now, and while times have been tough for many small businesses, Foltz has stayed very busy.

“Most of the people I know are in similar situations as me and have been doing well or at least able to still do their job,” Foltz said.

Things are still going to be different for a while. Foltz, as well as most beauticians would book multiple appointments at a time to increase their revenue. State mandates only allow one person at a time, which either forces Foltz to bring in less revenue or work longer days to make up the difference.

Michigan still remains in Phase 4 of the re-opening process. Large indoor venues like arcades, gyms, and movie theaters are still closed to the public.
