CLAY, N.Y. (NCC News) — Micron’s bombshell announcement at Syracuse University on Tuesday sent ripple waves through Central New York.
Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, alongside Governor Kathy Hochul (D), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D) and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon (R), announced the company would be investing $100 billion over the next 20 years, an action which will also create close to 50,000 jobs in the region. The main investment is in a “mega fab,” a semiconductor manufacturing plant.
“To the residents of this community, the greatest company of memory technology in the world just made their largest investment in their company’s history on you,” McMahon said.
“We knew that we could resurrect our manufacturing greatness here in Central New York, which has the combination of skilled workers, infrastructure and site specs, and the clean power to land a mammoth chip factory,” Schumer said.
That manufacturing prowess was an important consideration for Micron, as was the readiness of the site itself. The sites’ size and its access to water and clean power was a huge pull for the multibillion dollar company. The county has also agreed to spend $200 million to upgrade sewage treatment plants in the area.
White Pine Commerce Park in Clay came into existence about 30 years ago, when Onondaga County decided to set aside a piece of land for corporate investment. The county came close numerous times to finding a suitor, but nothing fully materialized until now, when Micron officially decided to take a chance on the site.
However, the effects of the plant will be felt well outside Clay. Semiconductors are crucial for technological manufacturing, and Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of making these parts in the United States.
“Imagine a world where global supply chains are disrupted, or think of a geopolitical situation where something manufactured in a country that now turns on us and has embargoes and trade practices to stop us from being able to receive this chip,” Hochul said.
Mehrotra expects site preparation to begin in 2023, with construction to officially begin the year after that.
