SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The Micron plant is on its way to Syracuse. The microchip processor is investing $100 billion to bring the business to Central New York. According to County Executive Ryan McMahon, the decision says something larger about the Syracuse area.
“To the residents of this community, the greatest company of memory technology in the world, just made their largest investment in their company’s history on you,” McMahon said.
President Joe Biden’s visit to Syracuse today makes sense. Micron estimates that the semiconductor fabrication plant will create 9000 jobs over the next 20 years, with an average pay of over $100,000. Projections say 40,000 more jobs will be created at suppliers and companies that relocate near the plant. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says its apart of a continued effort to build in the US.
“Only two percent of the world’s memory is made in the US. But we are going to change that,” said Mehrotra.
Outside of jobs, the housing market in Syracuse will be strongly affected. Land prices in Clay have already shot up and the county estimates the factory could lead to a 60% rise in population. McMahon maintains all of this means growth for the area
“The future of this country is now, it is here in Onondaga County in Central New York,” said McMahon. “Listen everybody, buckle up, it’s coming and it’s coming now.”
Site work will begin in 2023 with construction following in 2024.
