One year after the historic birth captured hearts across the U.S.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) – The Rosamond Gifford Zoo celebrated the ‘miracle’ twin baby elephants’ first birthday on Sunday, Oct. 22nd. The male twins, Yaad and Tukada, are the only successful birth of twin elephants known in the United States. The historic birth brought the Central New York community together again, one year later, for an afternoon of fun-filled celebrations.

The ‘EleTwins’ were sung the “Happy Birthday” tune before participating in a cake smash filled with vegetables, frozen fruit, whipped cream and cereal.

According to the Zoo, the one-year celebration is a huge milestone. Elephant twins compromise less than 1% of elephant births worldwide, and among those, twins are often stillborn or too weak to survive.

Since they were born, the twins have doubled in size, weighing nearly 500 pounds each at one-years-old.

Those who want to give the twins a birthday present can purchase items for them at the Curious Cub Gift Shop or online here.

“Your birthday gift can help provide the twins with their favorite snacks like jelly bean and marshmallow, fun toys, engaging puzzles, boomer balls to keep them active all year long,” the Zoo stated.
