Coming up on mornings on the hill
It’s st. patrick’s day
find out how people are celebrating
during the pandemic and get your
brackets ready because su mens
basketball is headed to the ncaa
tournament to play san diego state
friday night plus su students and
faculty will have their first wellness
day next tuesday
hear how they plan to spend their day
good morning i’m doug cortese thanks for
joining us for mornings on the hill
and i’m maya lockett here’s a look at
some of the stories we’ll be talking
about in our first half hour
it is st patrick’s day a big day for
celebrations and wearing green
our sierra ryder is live to tell us a
little bit more about how this holiday
has become a season in syracuse
sierra
janet higgins is the president of the
syracuse st patrick’s day parade
she has been a part of the festive
tradition dating back to 1983
watching it evolve into the large
gathering syracuse sees today
it started on montgomery street it was a
very small parade
and then eventually it developed into
what it is today
it’s just grown and grown the annual
parade happens this saturday before st
patrick’s day but the irish celebrations
begin
far before that day oh uh the typical
year
for st patrick’s day this season would
start the last sunday of february
why is the season um so long to
celebrate st patrick’s day so
syracuse in general they have a
history of irish immigrants kind of
coming here to work on the erie canal
the irish that came in the 1800s stayed
leaving behind a unique
irish touch most pronounced in the
tipperary hill neighborhood
1920s local irish
children in that neighborhood just kept
breaking the red light uh because they
wanted the
irish green up over that syracuse’s
irish heritage has not been lost on the
community
from coleman’s green beer sunday to the
irish festival that occurs in september
the syracuse irish connection remains
strong the irish
are very resilient if they weren’t as
resilient as they are
we wouldn’t we would have died out years
ago
i have it on good authority that next
year’s parade is going to be the pot of
gold at the end of a long anticipated
rainbow
in fact i already have my outfit ready
you guys
so in the meantime have some corned beef
and cabbage
wear some green and have a great st
patrick’s day reporting live for
mornings on the hill i’m sierra ryder
thanks sierra now we go to our covid 19
update at syracuse
university with the latest numbers here
on campus one year since the first
covid case in onondaga county
and syracuse university is still
combating the virus while the numbers
have remained in control for most of the
semester
there are still 142 students in
quarantine
and 52 active cases of students staff
and faculty
living in central new york but an
outbreak has occurred within shaw hall
within the past week
and as of last night residents have
learned that they are required
to get tested for covid today
it just got a little easier to travel to
and from new york state but there is
still no word if syracuse students can
travel
unless that travel is deemed essential
by the university our brendan scaland is
live with the story
that’s right maya governor cuomo
announced last thursday that people
traveling to new york state
no longer have to quarantine for two
weeks this recent news has some su
students hoping for
change in the university’s travel
restrictions
with holidays like easter and passover
right around the corner many students
are anxious
to travel back home even if just for a
weekend
however unless approved by the
university students aren’t able to fly
anywhere to see their family
i wish i could see them like i they want
to plan something for easter
and i probably won’t be able to go see
them and especially since we’re
going to be here until the end of or the
beginning of july like i don’t know if
i’ll see them even before then
the urge to visit home is only
increasing after governor cuomo
announced new york state will be lifting
the mandatory two-week quarantine
for those returning to the state
starting april 1st
in a march 12 email one day after
cuomo’s announcement
su said non-essential travel is still
restricted
and less students traveling means less
traffic at the syracuse hancock
international airport
airport executive jason terreri says
there’s definitely
a noticeable difference this year
traditionally
march the end of march is one of our
busiest times of year
to for travel and we’re not seeing that
this year but terreri expects volume at
the airport to pick up soon as
restrictions are lifted and more people
become vaccinated
and he and his team are ready over the
past year we’ve done a lot to get ready
for everybody coming back in
from a uvc lighting perspective all the
hvac units
all have uvc lighting in them as well as
high
concentration areas like the checkpoint
we have uvc lights installed to sanitize
the air
we put uvc light cleaners on all our
escalator handrails we bought hospital
grade misting machines we put signage up
social distancing markers and then our
partners
at the airlines tsa have all made their
own improvements as well
and guys it’s not yet clear what
students will be able to do after
april 1st but we do expect some type of
announcement or clarification from the
university
in the coming weeks for mornings on the
hill i’m brendan scanland back to you
guys in the studio
syracuse university student association
assembly passed a bill to move their new
constitution to a wide
to a campus-wide referendum vote
throughout this week the syracuse
student body will be able to vote on the
rewritten student association
constitution
some of the key changes include
increasing student representation
within the university adding a
school-wide election during the fall
each year
in addition to the spring election it’s
expanding the role of a judicial branch
to hold the executive and legislative
branch
accountable and a bylaw to help students
understand their rights on campus
all su and suny esf students can vote on
the ratification of the constitution
on myslice until thursday syracuse
university announced an update on covid
19 eligibility
our reporter kathina montgomery says
some student workers are eligible to get
the vaccine
starting today march 12th syracuse
university sent out an email to students
with the new update regarding the covid
19 vaccine
eligibility in the email it stated as of
march 17th
employees who are currently required to
perform their job
in person and on campus will be eligible
under the designation of
in-person college faculty or essential
in-person staff this means that student
workers
including ras are now eligible to
receive the vaccine
sierra maria sanchez an r.a in watson
hall
shared her feelings when she was told
the news
i mean i felt like finally like i feel
like it’s been so
long that we were in the front lines as
our race
and we were like expected to like do
room checks and all these things that um
and make us essential workers like you
know we’re kind of risking
ourselves for this shot going into
people’s rooms
and just sharing bathrooms and all that
so i was finally
like relieved that i had that
opportunity
the opportunity is now open but the
decision
is still individual junior justin wu
another ra in watson hall was once
skeptical
on getting the vaccine but now that he
has the choice
his decision has changed i feel like
before i think i was 50 50 on like
whether or not i
should but like at home i have
um both my parents are pretty like
immunocompromised
so it if i have the opportunity and
i don’t know if we have to go home early
it’d be nice to have already gotten the
vaccine
well for student workers like justin and
maria
the choice is now an option reporting
for ncc news
i’m kathina montgomery thanks kathina
for the second year in a row syracuse
university has received a record number
of first-year applicants
the university received just under
40000 new applicants
this is a 24 percent increase from last year’s
numbers
coming up here on mornings on the hill a
look at how syracuse university and
students are preparing for their first
wellness day of the semester
also coming up syracuse held its first
virtual annual service of
commemoration stay with us for those
stories and much more
here on mornings on the hill
welcome back to mornings on the hill
central new york weather continues to
show
brief glimpses of spring dan baldwin
joining to tell us why you might be able
to ditch the big jacket later today
and this weekend dan
guys as you can see i’m all bundled up
to battle the classic cuse cold
but later today i’m going to ditch the
big jacket and that’s because
central new york continues to see brief
glimpses of the upcoming spring
on this st patrick’s day morning i guess
you can call that the luck of the irish
looking at our st patrick’s day forecast
we’re in the mid 40s right now but
things should steadily warm up
throughout the day
midday we’ll get into the mid 50s good
enough reason to take a break
into a st paddy’s day jig but the sun
will stay hidden behind the clouds
should be overcast the warmer weather
will be short-lived however
as temps should dip back down into the
low 40s in the evening
moving on to the five-day forecast make
sure you have your rain jackets handy as
it’s going to be a wet one
90 chance of precipitation throughout
the day with a high in the low 40s
should be steady all day the rain should
clear up by friday but temps are
projected
to drop into the low 30s but we’re
getting a complete 180 this weekend as
saturday
should hit close to 50 and sunday even
60. both days full of sunshine and
monday is going to close out the heat
wave
with a forecast of sunny and 65.
now the biggest question is whether or
not syracuse students are going to be
able to enjoy
the sunshine filled weekend as i’m not
sure if you guys know but
there’s a pretty big ncaa tournament
game for the orange this friday
as they take on the sixth ranked san
diego state aztecs
if they can pull off the upset they’re
going to move on and play sunday
and the su women are playing sunday
evening so if that’s the case and both
teams are playing this
sunday i think a lot of su students are
going to be glued to their tvs inside
but regardless we have a sunshine filled
weekend ahead of us back to you guys in
the studio
syracuse held its first service of
commemoration last night
the ceremony was held virtually this
the service of commemoration is set to
honor those in the su and esf community
whose lives have been lost over the past
year although the ceremony took place
virtually over zoom
hendricks chapel still lit candles in
memoriam of these community members
next tuesday is the first wellness day
of the semester
our adam klepp caught up with students
and faculty to talk about their plans
for the special day this is what
syracuse university classrooms will look
like on tuesday march 23rd
it’s the first of two wellness days for
the university and student carl jones
has big plans
first wellness day you know i got to go
to campus enjoy myself
just relax see other people you know
just just chill and relax and of course
you know me
uh after i relax i gotta go home and
just play video games playing a little
madden a little call of duty maybe hop on
the 2k a little bit you know just
enjoy myself
for others the day off is nice
but doesn’t get them out of real world
responsibilities well im working from about
7 am to 3 pm so other than that I don’t have to
Go to class after which is nice but its not really
enough time to go anywhere no major plans there
however this day has caused some stress for
faculty as they’ve had to work through their syllabuses
to make sure theres no due dates or new assignments
on a wellness day
I think it’s a good idea uh I just wish we had gotten more
Advance notice than we did so that we could have
Planned appropriately and wouldn’t have had to
Change up our syllabus at the last minute
Which is one of the things I had to do
And while frigid temperatures have descended
Back on campus for this week
Next Tuesdays projected high is going to be
64 degrees so Syracuse students getting
some nice weather to go along with their day off
Reporting from Syracuse im adam klepp
Mornings on the hill
still to come here on mornings on
the hill talha rao takes us through the
midwest region including
syracuse’s path to the final four plus a
look at the women’s bracket
stay with us that story and more just
ahead
the big dance is back good morning folks
this is Talha rao with your sports update
college basketball fans can finally
rejoice as the ncaa tournament
tips off tomorrow night after a near
two-year pause
the syracuse orange is among
the 68 teams selected for the tournament
as they will face the 60 to san diego
state friday night
and if syracuse can get past the aztecs
they will go on to face the winner of
virginia and morehead state and if
things continue to work out for jim
boeheim’s
squad they could potentially face the
number one seed in the
midwest region in illinois meaning
syracuse transfer
alan griffin will face off against his
former team
in illinois
now folks around the country have
counted out the orange due to an up and
down season
but the team is playing its best
basketball right now
looking at the field as a whole i do not
expect to see as many upsets this year
as we have seen in the past during march
madness that’s simply because the
tournament will be played in a bubble
which allowed the community to see teams
without having to worry about location
now the path to the final four will be
the toughest in the midwest region
that i believe in the midwest region
with teams that i believe have been
underestimated like the a seed in loyola
chicago
the fourth seed in oklahoma state who
has one of the best players in the
nation in kate cunningham
and tennessee who is a fifth seed but
has been playing elite defense
all year that said i’ve got top seeded
illinois moving on from the region on
the back of their young stars
ayo de sumo and center kofi coburn
moving on to the south
i’ve got number two seated ohio state
going
all the way
you guys get the point baylor has not
been playing his best basketball
as of late we can blame it on the
three-week covid pause but i think the
bears played their best ball in january
moving on to the west region
this was the easiest decision for me at
least the bulldogs have been the most
consistent team in college basketball
all season
and to add on top of that the west may
be
the weakest region but the zags have
already beaten teams in their region
like iowa
kansas and virginia tough to count the
bulldogs out this season
and last but not least we’ve got the
east region
the crimson tide i think will represent
the east region in the final four
as weird as that is to say during march
madness alabama has been knocking on the
door under coach nate oates and i think
they can get it done
an upset to watch out in the first round
may also take place in this region
watch out for number 12 georgetown over
number five colorado
a week ago if someone has said that to
me i would have left but having caught
fire at the perfect time
patrick ewing’s hoyas are a team to
watch in the tournament
and syracuse women’s basketball punched
their ticket back to the ncaa tournament
and their first opponent is a familiar
foe
our samantha crosston tells us what
they’re facing through the first week of
play
the eighth seeded orange will be out for
revenge when they take on the ninth
seeded jackrabbits
from south dakota state this sunday that
craving for payback stems from the
jackrabbits upset of the orange
in the second round of the 2019
tournament the 75-64 loss
kept syracuse from their second ever
sweet 16.
despite that the orange are in the
middle of the most successful stretch in
their history
having made eight consecutive ncaa
tournaments
and while the big dance is familiar
territory both head coach quinton
hillsman and star point guard tiana mangakhaia
agree there’s something different about
the eighth go-around
i think just just just the sacrifice and
the
attention to detail that we had to do as
a program just to just to get to these
games
that was a lot it really was a lot but
when we knew it was worth it we knew it
would be worth it
and we knew we had enough talent to make
it to the ncaa tournament and have a
chance to compete for a national
championship
i think this gives all of us the
opportunity
to play on the big stage and show how
good we really are
if the orange win that one they’ll
likely earn a chance to go up against
the top-seeded uconn
and their freshman phenom paige beckers
the last time these two teams face off
at least in tournament play was in the
2016
national championship reporting live for
mornings on the hill i’m samantha
crosston
talha thanks samantha coming up after
the break

the season finale of the bachelors aired
