Mornings on the Hill March 24 2021 10:30AM Mornings on the Hill March 24 2021 10:30AM

good morning
i’m darasha singleton thanks for joining
us for mornings on the hill
and i’m brendan scanland let’s take a
look at some of these stories we’ll be
covering in our second half hour
some syracuse students took to the
streets to celebrate after the big win
against west virginia sunday night
our dan baldwin has more on the
university’s response to the gathering
dan
brendon i’m outside castle court aka the
scene of the raucous party sunday
night but let me tell you something
these types of gatherings are somewhat
of a tradition during march madness
you see it all the time the team gets a
big win students flock to the street and
go nuts
but i will tell you these aren’t normal
times that would be something that’s
normal to do
although the party only lasted 22
minutes it was technically in violation
of the syracuse university stay safe
pledge
and let me tell you something these
videos got a lot of traction online to
the point where everyone
including the onondaga county executive
himself had something to say about them
syracuse students swarmed castle court
sunday night shortly after the 11th
seeded orange stunned west virginia to
book their ticket to the sweet 16.
students jumped up and down blaring the
song country roads in celebration
this brief party was in violation of the
university’s covid 19 rules
student association vice president ryan
golden said he was disappointed in the
students actions
i don’t know what it’s going to take to
get them to realize that their actions
could have consequences beyond anything
that could impact them
but it’s it’s disappointing the party
led to the university releasing a
statement urging students to remember to
quote
celebrate responsibly rather than punish
the students onondaga county executive
ryan mcmahon had another idea
well i mean let me vaccinate the kids
that probably be the best way to handle
this situation don’t you think
mcmahon tried to put the students
actions in perspective saying he wasn’t
surprised that students wanted to
celebrate a big w
we’re a year into this to think college
kids aren’t going to
bend or break the rules or that they’re
going to be militant at this point
that’s that’s not pragmatic thinking
golden however strongly disagreed with
mcmahon’s assessment of the situation
this idea of kids will be kids is very
stupid we’re not kids
we’re all of us are adults and we need
to act like it the party came at a time
when the university is trying to contain
a small outbreak on campus
as of tuesday evening 246 students were
in quarantine and there had been 164
positive tests in the past two weeks
mcmahon claimed that the state should
vaccinate the demographic that poses the
biggest risk to the community which he
believes includes
college students the data now tells us
where
the biggest risk to the whole community
is now it’s to the 18 to 40 demographic
so going out and vaccinating the
demographic
helps solve a lot of problems
golden also told me that he doesn’t
think there’s a way the university can
proactively prevent these gatherings
from happening
he thinks the only way you can prevent
them is showing up after the fact and
breaking them up
with the way buddy behind shooting the
rock syracuse might have a final four in
its near future
and if that does happen the university
will certainly have its hands full
reporting live with mornings on the hill
i’m dan baldwin
tuesday marked one of the first times
syracuse university has let students
stay home
during the week our reporter ryan clark
tells us why
and how the day off came about ryan
what’s the point now yeah
it’s a day off for syracuse we just been
going like working hard for the last
couple of weeks and you know sometimes
you need a day to like just
wind down relax it’s a wellness day
a new initiative by syracuse university
in order to preserve
students mental health an email by the
office of enrollment and the student
experience
said the university’s goal is to help
students relax during challenging times
[Music]
the message from administration offered
activities all across campus for
students to participate in
those include recreational sports arts
and crafts
and research seminars for students
so this is that day that’s what we’re
using it for i mean it’s a beautiful day
and you know you gotta
take advantage of it this is just one of
two wellness days as part of syracuse’s
plan
to help students cope with the stress of
covid 19.
they believe students can use this time
to relieve their minds
and their bodies
well syracuse university picked a
phenomenal day for a wellness day
temperatures rose to almost 70 degrees
and we saw students
all over campus sitting outside relaxing
and soaking up the sun
now syracuse university also has another
wellness day planned
for one month in advance on wednesday
april 21st
we will continue to update you with more
information as we get closer to that
wellness day
but now reporting live in syracuse for
mornings on the hill
i’m ryan clark thanks ryan syracuse
university is planning on having a full
in-person semester this fall
chancellor ken syverud sent an email to
students families and faculty updating
them on next semester’s status
severed says the first day of classes
will be august 30th
however the chancellor did pump the
brakes a little saying that it is still
too soon to figure out what covid
conditions will be like
in the next six months part of the
reason for optimism is because of the
multiple vaccines that are now available
su hopes to start vaccinating students
by the end of this semester
it’s national orange day and the alumni
relations office
is hosting many special events on campus
this week as a part of forever orange
week
our adam klepp reports many special
events have been taking place
on campus as part of forever orange week
the schedule of events has been put
together by grace terry and the office
of alumni engagement
so forever orange week surrounds
national orange day
which is our university birthday on
march 24th
and the week is all about the orange
community and celebrating philanthropy
some of the events that have already
taken place have been a virtual 5k
and a virtual collage art project along
with the su museum of art
one of the main events of the week is a
virtual food drive which is happening
today
but being safe and socially distanced
we’re going to be hosting a virtual food
drive where we’re asking folks to make
financial contributions to the hendricks
chapel food pantry
um just just because it’s really been a
staple
throughout covid those looking to make a
contribution can find the donation link
on our mornings on the hill twitter page
adam klepp mornings on the hill
thanks adam and we want to send a big
happy birthday to otto the orange
unfortunately otto could not join us
this morning but we hope he has a great
day
su’s pre-law fraternity phi alpha delta
is under investigation by the university
after allegedly violating the code of
student conduct
and scu’s fraternity and sorority
affairs policies
the specifics of the violations remain
unclear
university spokeswoman sarah scalise did
not provide much detail
but did say all chapter activities will
be halted while the investigation is
ongoing
inviting all members of the s-u
community to join and discuss
the recent events of asian-american
racism in the u.s
the forum is virtual and will take place
on march 26 from 12pm
to 1pm those who want to register can go
to the honors program website
and use their syr email coming up
on mornings on the hill a new magazine
is being published on campus
some gloomy weather today in syracuse
will it warm up
stay tuned for your mornings on the hill
weather update
well buddy boeheim certainly made it rain
in indianapolis this weekend
and it looks like the rains made its way
to syracuse adriana rosas rivera is live
with the forecast for this week adriana
how does it look out there
thanks guys and we’ve had a nice couple
of days with some sunshine
but today it’s taking a break let’s go
ahead and take a look at our current
conditions
this morning make sure to carry an
umbrella and a rain jacket temperatures
in syracuse will hang around the low
50’s
with showers expected through the
morning and it currently feels like
54 degrees slightly chilly with 51
percent chance of humidity
now taking a look at the central new
york region similar patterns seneca
falls utica oswego rochester in the high
40s as well cortland and binghamton
slightly chillier with 45 degrees
and looking ahead for the next five days
will it get sunnier well it’s going to
vary conditions are going to be up and
down
good news tomorrow will be sunny and
warm with a 76 degree
high chillier temperatures coming back
friday saturday and sunday
with showers and cloudy skies so don’t
put those raincoats away
just yet those winter jackets keep them
on hand because we’ll be seeing lows of
38
and 31 on friday and sunday respectively
so again folks take advantage of the
weather tomorrow 76 degrees
be sure to social distance outside
because you might not get the chance
for the next couple of days for mornings
on the hill i’m adriana rosas rivera
back to you thank you so much the campus
community is invited to submit
nominees for the 2021 chancellor’s award
for engagement and scholarship
one graduate and one undergraduate
student will be selected for the award
that will be given at the one university
awards ceremony
in late april nominations can be
submitted online and are due by next
monday
march 29th crowd magazine which
highlights the lgbtqia plus community is
set to release their first magazine
queer and quarantine warnings on the
hill cyera williams tells us more
good morning brendan the outcrowd has
not only published their new edition of
queer and quarantine
but their first edition in three years
the publication was largely impacted by
the pandemic
making limited gatherings harder to meet
but despite that i had the chance to
talk with editor-in-chief
paul lennon and feature editor amanda
paul
on how things have been here’s what they
have to say
we thought about how kind of this past
year
has been impacted by and
impacting um queer people in a different
way than
than non-queer people so um we thought
about how
you know people went home to families
maybe that didn’t accept their sexuality
or gender identity or
they went home to places that they
weren’t fully out
um and they had to you know kind of code
switch into
into quarantine my next question is what
are some
um challenges that presented itself or
maybe even backlash
um that happened when you were putting
this magazine together
i don’t know if there’s too much uh i
think yeah i think the biggest challenge
and one that
sort of patrick was taking head on was
this reviving
of the magazine you know assembling a
team from scratch
um and sort of building up that momentum
and energy around the magazine from
nothing
and despite these challenges the queer
and quarantine new edition
has examined how how it’s been for
people who had the quarantine in spaces
that were not best for their
individuality this edition can be found
online on campus or at the resource
center for mornings on the hill i’m
cyera williams
thanks cyera s.u students approved the
new student association constitution
on monday over 1600 students voted with
almost 100
voting to approve the new constitution
in order for the
initiative to pass the student
association needed over 10 percent of
the student population had to vote
10.2 percent of the students voted
student association member joshu
seltzer was not happy with the low voter
turnout
and believes students did not fully
understand what the constitution meant
shuv seltzer spoke with the daily orange
and said in part quote
whether students care or not this does
not affect them and this does affect
their experience students didn’t really
get what was this about
i was very disappointed by the lack of
reaction from the people
reached out to end quote the student
association also unanimously passed a
bill monday that condemns anti-semitism
at syracuse university
the bill condemns all form of racism
bigotry and violence against the jewish
community
it also allows student association
members and other community leaders to
access
access anti-semitism training including
a stop bias program
through syracuse hillel still to come
here on mornings on the hill
troy rose takes us through syracuse
men’s basketball’s magical run to the
sweet 16.
that story and more coming up on
mornings on the hill
[Music]
good morning a lot going down for su
sports i hope you’re staying awake with
me i’m troy rose
with your orange sports update for
mornings on the hill
syracuse men’s basketball is still
dancing after punching their ticket
the orange has not disappointed and
found themselves back in the sweet 16
after three years in the first round
cuest took on six seeded san diego state
smooth win for the orange topping the
aztecs 78-62
second round third seeded west virginia
tough battle but syracuse won the nail
biter 75-72
led by buddy boeheim he scored 57 points
in two games and he shot 13 of 23 from
three-point land
queues an underdog in the previous two
matchups but he says it feels great
to prove the critics wrong describe it
something i dreamed about my whole life
and to win two games
we doubted in both the underdog and
this means everything i mean if you were
to ask me a month or two months ago
where
i think we would be i don’t think i
would say sweet 16 that’s for sure
and this team just never gave up we just
kept playing
um and it’s just amazing to be on part
of this team and
how fun these these moments are and the
fans were so
so fun and amazing having them there
syracuse has second seeded houston this
saturday at 9
55 pm late game so make sure you get it
now for something before this one
and james corrigan is here to break down
everything orange
james how have the orange been able to
pull off these upsets
well troy it’s all about the shooting
you mentioned the hot streak that buddy
boeheim has been on but joe girard has
almost been just as hot he’s been
maligned a bit this season
but he’s made seven threes combined in
the two ncaa tournament games
and the orange have gotten contributions
off the bench from players
like robert braswell whose role seems to
be increasing
as the season has gone on so obviously
buddy is getting all the headlines but
the hot shooting for the orange has been
a team effort
and this is not the first time syracuse
has made a run as a lower seed
how do they keep doing it well jim
boeheim
is the puzzle master he keeps putting
the pieces together year after year they
don’t always fit
early in the season as we saw this year
this isn’t a very deep
team but somehow some way they all seem
to fit
by march the one month that counts
and lastly what do they have to do to
beat houston
that’s going to be a tough task troy
houston a top offensive and defensive
team quentin grimes one of the best
players in the country
this season syracuse just has to play
their game and shoot the ball
well houston does not give up a lot of
points they score a lot of points
it’s going to be a high scoring affair
without a doubt but if the orange
continue to shoot it from the outside
that the way they have
they could be on their way to the elite
eight
now for su’s women’s basketball
unfortunately the dance floor is closed
and cues is out
after suffering an 83-47 second round
blowout
to first see the uconn kamila cordoso
led the orange with 12 points and seven
boards
but paige becker’s 20 points helped fuel
the huskies win
hold your head high ladies i want to
commend the hard work for the effort
this season
and uconn will advance to the sweet 16
to face the fifth seeded iowa on
saturday
moving over to men’s lacrosse fourth
ranked syracuse will face number two
duke
down in durham on thursday the orange
are on a four-game winning streak
and with the help of fresh with the help
from freshman like owen hiltz
coach desko believes he’ll be a huge
boost as competition picks up
again i think he’s he’s just been you
know he’s been going like this
and so i’m thinking his best as yet to
come of course now we’re going to be
getting into
more of the meat of our schedule our acc
schedule and
be going against some you know obviously
the top competition
in the country and
opening face-off is set for 7 pm eastern
and can be found on the acc network
that will do it for sports this morning
coming up on mornings on the hill our
manny martinez tells us how
su’s winter carnival looked a little
different this year
that story and more next stay with us
each year the traditions commission runs
the winter carnival as part of
syracuse’s winterfest
traditional events include ice carvings
and of course the famous chili cook-off
but our reporting
manny martinez joins us now to tell us
how
one event this year looked a little
different
thanks guys the winter carnival is a
tradition dating back to 1930
and paint night is one of the regular
events at the winter carnival
but yesterday was the first time ever
there was a virtual component
cues winter carnival continued tuesday
the final event of the day was a paint
social
students online or at the shine student
center painted with an instructor who
was teaching via zoom
it was very stress-relieving you know as
a wellness day
you know it’s late at night i wanted to
you know i never get to paint
i never get to paint at home i don’t
have painting utensils never painted in
high school
and it was something different it was
fun syracuse students painted at tables
by themselves before sharing the final
results with their friends it was really
fun it was very relaxing
actually i really enjoyed not talking
for an hour and just painting
yeah taking a break from like readings
and all the work to do
students spent the hour-long session
painting a bundled up penguin
did you like what you painted yeah i
mean i think i’ll probably stick to like
the phd thing
yeah definitely not switching majors at
the end students got to take the artwork
and the art supplies home i didn’t
completely finish
but when i get home i will finish it’s
supposed to be a penguin
good start though that’s what it is yeah
tonight’s winter uh carnival main event
is a game night in the dome from 5 until
10.
