Mornings on the Hill March 3 10:00 Mornings on the Hill March 3 10:00

coming up on mornings on the hill
faculty say valuable historical items at
su
are at risk of decay a popular fast food
restaurant is being built on marshall
street
the syracuse women’s lacrosse team
issued an apology after a controversial
social media post
all that plus your weather and orange
sports coming up on mornings on the hill
do
good morning and welcome to mornings on
the hill i’m samantha croston and i’m
natalie fahmy here’s what you need to
know this morning
if you’ve been trying to find a vaccine
appointment now is your best shot here
in onondaga county
new vaccines are arriving and new
appointments are opening up
our rob flax joins us with what your
choices are and how to get that crucial
appointment rob
i have a teacher
more than that and that means that by
may the 4th of july
we’re going to have the end of may every
single adult is going to have a shot
thank you rob and while biden announced
that end of may timeline this week
two states announced they will be ending
their mask mandates and completely
opening up their states
texas and mississippi getting rid of
capacity restrictions and mask mandates
we’ll see if that end of may vaccine
timeline still holds
the carrier dome will also be regularly
available to students throughout the
semester
starting next tuesday in addition to
serving as a classroom and
center syracuse university announced the
dome will be set up like an indoor quad
the space will give students a chance to
study or socialize
on certain days each week socially
distanced areas will be
provided and masks must be worn at all
times
you will be able to use the dome as a
quad but still can’t attend basketball
games new york state allowed arenas with
capacities of more than
10 000 people to reopen two weeks ago
but each venue must have
their plan approved by the department of
health syracuse’s plan has not been
approved yet prompting a delay to when
students can attend sporting events
the men’s basketball team plays its
final regular season game tonight at
home
against clemson the lacrosse season
began last week but it’s still unclear
if and when fans will return to the dome
for those games
starting on march 5th local bars are
allowing customers to play games like
pool
and dart adam klepp found out how this
change in guidance is providing relief
for local businesses
it’s widely known that restaurants
across the country are struggling during
the COVID 19 pandemic
many people forget about the subsidiary
businesses that rely
on the health of the restaurant industry
one of those is doc hillmeyer’s family
business stanton automatics
which supplies pool tables dart boards
and other games and accessories to bars
around central new york
doc said it was a challenge to get
people to even recognize the hardships
his business was going through
as we were calling our senators and our
representatives in the area
we had to explain that we were actually
a
business doc said most of his revenue
this past year has come from atm
machines and juke boxes but
with games being allowed to return to
bars on march 5th
doc is hopeful he can return some of the
pool tables and dart boards
that he had to remove during the
pandemic so we have received multiple
phone calls over the last week about
bringing some pool tables back
um you know but but not nearly the 50 or
75 that we’ve picked up just because
you know the the bar and restaurant
capacity is only at 50 after march 5th
doc
is hopeful that he can recoup some of
those lost revenue streams
from billiards tables as well as
dartboards but doc told me that some of
the businesses that he used to rent to
are no longer even open so how quickly
we get back to normal
and businesses can resume renting their
services to bars
is still unclear adam klepp mornings on
the hill
thanks adam here’s a game that’s not
only has a cause but is very near and
dear to the orange basketball community
sarah case’s very own tiana mangakahia
had
a battle with breast cancer last year
and played in the play4kay game this past
weekend
the women sported new custom uniforms
made by a current syracuse student
our keithina montgomery has more on this
story
on february 28th senior noah hammerman
quite
literally saw his designs come to life
noah
is a senior at syracuse university
studying graphic design and he is the
first
student designer to ever collaborate
with nike making custom uniforms
not just for a game but for a cause i
was able to sit
noah hammerman is a senior at syracuse
university and at just the young
age of 22 he has collaborated with nike
designing uniforms for the syracuse
women’s basketball team
noah has been working with syracuse
athletics since he was a freshman
working mainly on social media projects
so when this opportunity came along to
design a uniform
noah was excited for the challenge uh
i had no idea what i was getting myself
into and i love
that i am eager to learn
and this opportunity that was presented
gave me that chance to learn a whole new
world that i had never known
the uniforms were worn this past weekend
for the play for kay
game on sunday a game that is used to
bring awareness
and funding to the kay yao cancer fund
a cause that is very personal for noah
this meant the world because within this
past year somebody passed away that was
very close to me and i i knew that it
was
necessary to get this done noah’s resume
has grown adding to the
already glamorous list of employers
including espn
sports illustrated and more but out of
all of the projects and designs that
noah has worked on
this one resonates with him the most it
was definitely my legacy at syracuse
this project and i want it to stay that
way there’s so
that’s such a plethora of things that
you can uh
can do and so that that’s what i want my
legacy
to be that you design with passion and
you design meaningfully
four columns and 11 rows make up the 44
ribbon design
44 is seen all across syracuse athletics
but this number 44 was specifically for
tiana manghakia
44 career high end points and
encompassing her
unbelievable story of beating breast
cancer
you can find more details about noah’s
design on cuse.com
for mornings on the hill i’m keithina
montgomery
coming up on mornings on the hill a
legendary hangout spot
is returning to syracuse’s campus find
out what s.u alums are feeling
and caleb britt will have your full
weather forecast stay tuned
temperatures and windy conditions over
the last couple of days
caleb britt joins us live for weather
caleb how long will it stay like this
good morning sam these conditions aren’t
going anywhere anytime
soon so don’t be too quick to put up
those snow boots or
that jacket so let’s take a quick look
at the five-day forecast
right now we’re sitting at 37 degrees
and we’ll see that rise to about 41
degrees today
with a chance of snow or rain and then
we’ll see those temps drop
tomorrow we’ll see a low sorry a high of
28 in the low of 16.
you may also see some flurries in the
morning and then going into friday we’ll
see a high of 28 and a low of 20
with no snow or rain in sight but it’s
syracuse for that might change
and then going into the weekend we’ll
have a mostly cloudy day on saturday
with a high of 28
and a low of 19. there may be a couple
of snow
flurries in the morning but overall it’s
going to be a cloudy day
and then we’ll see the sun come out on
sunday but the high of 34
and a low of 19. you may see a few
clouds on sunday as well but again the
sun will be out so
be a great time to get out maybe take
some fun pics with your friends on
sunday
now let’s take a look at our neighbors
we see in binghamton utica and seneca
falls
it’s 26 degrees in oswego it’s 27
degrees and in rochester
it’s 35 degrees so we are all out here
cold
and shivering together but that’s what
we do in upstate
so please make sure that when you’re out
please bundle up or your scarf your
jacket
and also your mask of course that’s all
i have for you right now
reporting live from the veterans
building caleb britt mornings on the
hill
thank you caleb we have an update on the
pending investigation of governor andrew
cuomo
a third woman has come forward against
the governor anna ruck says during a
wedding in 2019
cuomo made an unwanted advance towards
her rec told the new york times that
cuomo put his hand
on her lower bare back which the time
said was exposed in an open back dress
cuomo allegedly put both hands on ruck’s
cheeks and a friend of ruck says she
heard cuomo ask if he could
kiss her cuomo had his emergency powers
removed by the state legislator
yesterday a legendary hangout for
students will return to syracuse’s
campus hungry chucks
known for its graffiti wall and cold
drinks will reopen soon
bringing back lasting memories for some
su alums our troy rose joins us live
to share what some former students told
him
good morning team back in 2017
demolition work was done to clear the
alleyway
that now separates the apartment complex
the marshall
and campus bar orange crate left in that
debris
were bars like hungry chucks along with
other many blooming businesses at the
time
but now with the return set for the fall
many su alum
are taking some trips down memory lane
as to how they remember
the famous chucks for over 40 years
hungry chucks or charlie’s was allowed
for students looking to relax
and get class off their mind creating
some of the best college memories
for some su alums until i had
actually been into chuck’s i don’t think
i really had been to college
yet matt freidman class of 94
says the moment he stepped in the chucks
he knew he had arrived to college
walking down that basement into that bar
as a freshman it was like welcome to
college
the music was cranking everybody was
having a good time
that’s in the movies that’s what college
was like
but as they say fun doesn’t last forever
and after 46 years hungry chucks was
torn down
and replaced his campus living
and something so memorable could never
stay away from long
so as i said the return is for fall of
2021
and since the announcement outpour of
support has come via twitter
from su alums like scott mcfarland and
as you saw matt freidman
when it returns it’ll be located at the
ground level of the marshall
so not too far from his original
location so bars like faegans and orange
crate
you guys better watch out but that’s all
we have for now i’m in syracuse
troy rose from mornings on the hill
syracuse university is launching a new
program that commits to veterans
and their families program is called
operation veteran promise
the office of admissions will grant
local high school students
a guaranteed path to apply to syracuse
university
after they receive an honorable
discharge from the military
it will be available for students who
graduate in or after this spring
and complete an initial term of service
on active duty in the reserves
or on the national guard sus tournament
hopes are growing thin mat mlodzinski
will look into their chances when we
come back
good morning i’m mat mlodzinski with your
syracuse sports update
621 days that’s how long it had been
since tiana mangakahia was
first diagnosed with breast cancer the
syracuse star guard had
multiple rounds of chemotherapy among
other procedures
and while basketball became secondary
she never lost her love for the game
even through all the trials and
tribulations of surviving cancer
so on sunday when mangakahia laced up
her shoes one last time in the carrier
dome it was only fitting
that it was the play4 kay game of course
the name for the game in honor of kay
yao the former nc state wolf pack head
coach and why not
tiana with the triple to open things up
the orange
trailed by just three after the first
quarter second half now it’s mangakahia
again with the hesitation leading to the
easy layup
cues ahead by one thing started to get
interesting lay su on a 10-nothing run
and off the save
it’s kiara lewis from deep the orange
lead by one
but state showed why they’re the number
two team in the country off the out of
bounds play
syracuse gets the block but the wolf
pack recover and that would be
the dagger the orange come up short
68-61
on monday the syracuse orange men’s
basketball team hosted north carolina
in a pivotal matchup to keep the oranges
ncaa tournament hopes alive
tar heels up five late in the first half
as quidari richmond finds buddy behind
for the triple
and that would get things started
boeheim on the next play gets the pass
from marek dolezaj for another three as
the orange take a six point lead into
halftime
and they wouldn’t stop there q sup 11 as
quincy guerrie
corrals the long pass and gets the
acrobatic finish to go
and a late run by north carolina
wouldn’t be enough as syracuse holds on
for a two-point win
72-70 so with the win su
staying on the bubble with just one
regular season game to go
it’ll be against clemson at 5pm tonight
and with a win the orange are at least
in a nice spot to be
one of the last four teams into the
tournament or one of the first four
teams out
and with the acc tournament begins on
tuesday march 9th so if syracuse wants
to hear its name called
on selection sunday a win against
clemson and at least
one in the acc tourney seems like a must
and finally we look backwards to move
ahead
the 2020 syracuse football season is
long gone and three standout orange
players have a chance to showcase their
skills
at the 2021 nfl scouting combine it’ll
be three defensive backs in andre cisco
ifatteu melafonwu and trill williams the
combine runs from april 29th
through may 1st and that will do it for
your mornings on the hill sports update
excuse me schools across central new
york have shut down their ski programs
for over a year now syracuse remains one
of the few schools with an active ski
team
our doug cortese joins us with the story
thanks matt syracuse normally competes
in the u.s collegiate ski and snowboard
association against teams like ithaca
binghamton and cornell but this year
with the cancellation of the season due
to COVID 19
the players are just happy to get back
on the mountain
all the other schools we usually race
against aren’t
allowed administration isn’t allowing
them to leave their campus at all so
you know we kind of feel lucky that
we’re able to still get out there and
get on snow
the syracuse ski team hasn’t hit these
slopes for a competitive race since last
march
for senior taylor nolan that means
missing out on our top
goal i think it being senior year was
sad too
i wouldn’t have a last season to make it
to nationals
we found out nationals was cancelled
back in
november so we knew pretty soon that it
was like
you probably weren’t going to have a
season the ski team still practices and
does mock races with colgate
but for nolan COVID took away the best
part of any sport
being able to compete against so many
different schools
and seeing a lot of familiar faces
throughout the year and
now we don’t have that
one of the main differences in these
mock races is that the teams don’t go
down at the same time
instead one team will will go then the
next team will go and the fastest time
wins the race the syracuse ski team is
back in action
this weekend against colgate at
taughenburg mountain
reporting live in syracuse doug cortese
morning
and now that’ll do it for your syracuse

hill i’m mat mlodzinski sam
