OUR TOP STORY THIS HOUR… HEALTH IS ON EVERYONE’S MIND LATELY, AS THIS IS COLD AND FLU SEASON.
OUR REPORTER SARAH AL-SHAIKH IS LIVE AND BUCKLED UP WITH A NEW AND HEALTHY WAY TO GET AROUND CAMPUS…
YES, I’M INSIDE THE MOBILE HEALTH HUB WHERE THE BARNES CENTER IS TAKING
HEALTH RESOURCES ON THE ROAD
-PKG Duration: 1:02
*horn honking*
The Mobile Health Hub is bringing health resources to students and bringing students closer to their next destination. Patrick Lee is a peer educator at the Barnes Center. He says the Mobile Health Hub is a new way for students to get around campus.
“When we’re driving around, we see kind of like a couple of people walking together we’ll kind of pull up beside them and say like, ‘hey, do you want a ride in the health hub to your next class or to your next building on campus?”
But students are in for more than just a free ride…
“They’ll get in and we’ll have like an activity or game to play with them. We’ll have a free prize to give out and they can ask questions if they have any questions. And then we drop them off at their next location.”
Lee says this is a step towards creating a smarter and healthier campus…
“Sometimes people have mis-information or misconceptions about health information. So we wanted to give students another resource so they can gather accurate information and we want to give them a comfortable place where they can ask any questions they may have.”

THE MOBILE HEALTH HUB GIVES PRIZES LIKE MINI NOTEBOOKS AND GUM TO

S-U IS TRYING TO KEEP STUDENTS HEALTHY ON MAIN CAMPUS AND OVERSEA.
THE UNIVERSITY IS SHUTTING DOWN THE SYRACUSE ABROAD FLORENCE PROGRAM.
ABOUT 350 STUDENTS HAVE TO RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES BY THIS COMING SUNDAY UNDER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS.
ITALY CURRENTLY HAS ALMOST 300 CONFIRMED CASES OF THE CORONAVIRUS, AND THERE WAS A SPIKE IN DIAGNOSES THIS WEEK.
WE TALKED TO STUDENTS STUDYING IN FLORENCE WHO SAID THEY WERE DEVESTATED BY THE NEWS AND FEEL LIKE THE SCHOOL IS KEEPING THEM IN THE DARK.
THEY WERE ABOUT TO TAKE THEIR MIDTERMS AND WANT TO KNOW HOW THE SCHOOL IS GOING TO ACCOUNT FOR THE CHANGES IN COURSE SCHEDULES.
AN ADMINISTRATOR TOLD US THAT THE SCHOOL IS TRYING TO COME UP WITH A PLAN TO ACCOMODATE THEM.
STUDENTS ON CAMPUS HAVE ENTERED THEIR 10TH DAY PROTESTING THIS SEMESTER.
MEMBERS OF THE NOT AGAIN S-U MOVEMENT ARE OCCUPYING THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING TO FIGHT AGAINST RACIST, ANTI-SEMETIC, AND HOMOPHOBIC INCIDENCES.
THE PROTESTERS ARE SUPPOSED TO MEET WITH MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TODAY TO NEGOTIATE THEIR DEMANDS TODAY.
AS THEY ARE INSIDE THE BUILDING, THEY ARE ASKING FOR DONATIONS OF FOOD, OLD SWEATSHIRTS, AND HYGENE PRODUCTS….
DONATIONS CAN BE GIVEN TO THE PROTESTERS AND IF YOU HAVE MORE, THERE
IS ANOTHER PLACE ON CAMPUS THAT TAKES AND GIVES OUT MATERIALS AND FOOD TO STUDENTS?
OUR REPORTER MARSHA AUGUSTIN BRINGS AWARENESS TO THIS BEST KEPT SECRET.
Buying groceries can take a big bite out of students’ budget. There’s a hidden gem on campus where students can save on groceries, personal hygiene products and winter gear.
“100%! 100%!
Free that is! Worrell Richards is a junior and has been coming to the food pantry in Hendricks to shop for groceries at no cost for the past 2 years.
Richards says, if you are low on funds and need food.
“This is the perfect place to go to get simple foods like green beans and white potatoes.”
Richards says, he use to eat out everyday and now saves $200 a month stocking up on food from the pantry.
“It’s just helpful, it just makes it a lot easier instead of going out to spend money on food when I can come here and get free food.”
“The food pantry here at Hendricks Chapel offers free food to students every day. You can get anything from condiments to condoms.”
Syiesha Byrd, Director of the Office of Engagement Programs says, the problem was once students paid rent and other expenses, they didn’t have money left for food so that’s when they realized they needed to do something to help.
“We created a Hendricks Chapel food pantry to provide food for our students mainly juniors, seniors and grad students because they don’t have meal plans here on campus.”
Bryd says, they have a wide variety of items for students.
Rice, beans, ramen noodles, tuna fish, umm we get a lot of request for fresh fruits and veggies, milk and eggs and toiletrees is a big one.
You may thing this sounds too good to be true. Bryd says there is no catch.
“They are allowed one bag of groceries a week. We provide the bags, they come in they fill a bag,
Page 2
we don’t ask any questions.
Page 3
Bryd told me they also offer monthly workshops around healthy eating, financial literacy and thrift shopping in collaboration with 315 Rescue Mission on Marshall street. The food pantry is open daily except for Saturday’s.
IT WAS JUST STARTING TO DRIZZLE AS I GOT INTO THE STATION THIS MORNING.
OUR WEATHER ANCHOR GABRIELLE RILES IS LIVE OUT ON UNIVERSITY AVE WITH
ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT THE RAIN TODAY AND HOW THE WEATHER IS GOING TO LOOK THIS WEEKEND, GABBY?
A17 WEATHER-LIVE FSCG Duration: 0:24
TODAY IT IS 39 DEGREES AND RAINY BUT A WEEK AGO WE WERE EXPERIENCING
LAKE EFFECT SNOW IN SYRACUSE. MANY STUDENTS AT S-U AREN’T FAMILIAR
WITH SNOW YET ALONE THE LAKE EFFECT, ESPECIALLY ME I’M FROM NEW
ORLEANS AND I’VE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT. I WENT TO FIND OUT WHAT EXACTLY IS LAKE EFFECT SNOW IN CENTRAL NEW YORK.
“Lake effect snow is the type of snow you can pick up and you can just take a big breath and blow it and it just goes everywhere. It is light and it’s fluffy and it’s very special to Central New York or New York State because not everyone gets it.”
Many of us have seen how bad the lake effect can get on a snowy day in Syracuse.
But the amount of snowfall depends on which area you are in.
“Imagine you live five miles from your friend and your friend is five mile farther north, she can get ten inches of snow while you can get one or two so it’s very localized it all depends on the wind direction.”
Sometimes we can get three to six inches of snow and sometimes we can get one to two feet in a short amount of time.
“When you don’t have sun and the day time to compete with .”
That’s when it comes down the heaviest.
And that heavy snowfall comes from a huge body of water.
“We have this resource right next door, Lake Ontario, it has a whole lot of moisture it has a whole lot of water”
Lake Ontario is apart of the five great Lakes.
According to the meteorologist, the temperature of the lake water is around 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter.
In order for the lake effect to happen, the air that is 5,000 feet above the ground must be below freezing.
“This is the most difficult thing to forecast.. I found… What happens when cold air goes over that water, it picks up the moisture, it hits the land, you get lake effect snow.”
Difficult indeed
So let’s break it down a little bit more.
When cold air that blows in the same direction comes over a warm body of water it causes snow to form. The wind pushes the snow over to land.
The faster the wind the heavier the snowfall.

SOME AREAS OF CENTRAL NEW YORK WILL BE EXPERIENCING LAKE EFFECT
SNOW TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. WE WILL HAVE MORE ON THE LAKE EFFECT WARNING ON THE 10:30 NEWSCAST. BACK TO YOU GUYS IN THE STUDIO.

WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
THIS APP HAS BECOME A GLOBAL SENSATION. OUR VERY OWN BAILEY ARREDONDO AND I TAKE YOU INSIDE THE APP OF TIKTOK.
WHAT DID WE JUST WATCH?
YOU ARE LOOKING AT A PLATFORM THAT IS IN OVER 150 COUNTRIES AND HAS 1 BILLION GLOBALLY ACTIVE USERS.
TIKTOK…HAS BECOME THE SOCIAL MEDIA PHENOM.
THE APP ALONE HAS BEEN DOWNLOADED OVER 1.5 BILLION TIMES.
YES, YOU HEARD HIM CORRECTLY, 1.5 BILLION TIMES.
BUT WHERE DID THIS APP COME FROM?
AND HOW DID IT GET THIS POPULAR?
” Tiktok started in Beijing, China under the company ByteDance. Tiktok launched in 2017. They purchased musicly later that year. And in 2018 merged the two to give us a unified user experience. But what made Tiktok so big was the connection it made with its younger auidence. Tiktoks that go viral can get millions of views. But the process is actually quite simple and the creative control is all up to the user.”
USERS CAN SHARE 15 SECONDS..OF WELL…ANYTHING
THE IMPACT TIKTOK USERS HAVE HAS PROVEN TO BEYOND WHATS JUST INSIDE THE APP. WE’VE SEEN MANY NEWS ORGANIZATIONS PICK THESE STORIES UP.
LIKE THE WASHINGTON POST, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, AND THE NBA ALL STAR
WEEKEND. NOW WHAT DO ALL THESE ORGANZIATIONS HAVE IN COMMON, THAT
THEY ARE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE…10 YEARS
“So thats why Tiktok is important now to news organizations, not so much they care about producing funny content…but because they care so much about producing future readers and 10 year olds care about funny content.”
AND TIKTOK IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER APP.
YOU CAN LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE AND REPOST.
NCC KNOWS AND NOW YOU DO TOO.

The Setnor School of Music is in the midst of their Guest Artist Series in which they bring in musicians and performers from across the country. And, with the quality of recitals coming up, they want more people on campus to know who they are what they do. (TAKE PKG)
Page 1
“About 300 students, all doing a variety of different musical pursuits, ranging from performance, to composition, to music industry, umm, and that’s or school.”
And, their students pack their days to make sure they excel in their performances.
I normally start my days with practicing because in the mornings sometimes you can be like grumpy and out of it. And you’re like I just want to be by myself and get better at things and then I usually have class in the morning and then I help set up for wind ensemble and then right around noon I grab like a quick yogurt or something for lunch and then we rehearse for about an hour and a half. And then I get a little bit of a break in there before orchestra and then I just noodle around in there. And then once that’s over like on Wednesdays, we have concert band in the evening and we have a lot of kids in that
program.”
Their concerts are held in the Setnor Auditorium in Crouse Hall, but the seats are not always filled. But Harrity says that this can be changed if students just gave the shows a chance.
“Socialize and come and see something new. It’s also very rousing and exciting so I think that everyone can get behind it and really pumped and into this concert because it’s a lot of like energizing music.”
And, if you’re skeptical, there are different types of shows with different performers.
“I think it’s a really neat opportunity to get like exposed to different types of music you might not listen to in your free time. People like just don’t listen to like band music. But, it’s kind of neat to broaden your mind, especially since that’s what college is for.”
Page 2
Setnor’s next performance will be tomorrow from 8:00 – 10:00 pm. It will include the Akropolis Reed Quintet, the SU Wind Ensemble, and the SU Concert Band. Admission is free for all students.
