FIND OUT HOW ONE SYRACUSE PORFESSOR ISNT JUST TEAHCING THIS SEMESTER BUT TRAINING….
AND SYRACUSE DINNING IS LETTING THE STUDENTS SPEAK
AND HOW ONE COLLEGE ATHLETES RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS MOM LEAD HIM TO FIND LACROSSE.
ALL THAT PLUS YOUR WEATHER AND ORANGE SPORTS COMING UP ON THIS EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
GOOD MORNING I’M JULIANNA D’URZO. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AND I’M MICHELLE KNEZOVIC. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR SECOND HALF HOUR.
ONE SU PROFESSOR HAS TURNED A HOBBY INTO A LIFESTYLE, WHILE JUGGLING HIS DAILY LIFE RESPONSIBILTIES.
OUR ROBERT BRUIN TELLS US MORE ABOUT HIS JOURNEY.
SYRACUSE PROFESSOR, ULF OSTERLE COMPETES IN TRIATHLONS ACROSS THE
MAP, AND SEEMS TO HAVE BECOME ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY WHILE FIGHTING HIS PHYSICAL CHALLENGES.
At 42 years of age Ulf is training for a triathlon, which is no easy task, running, swimming, and cycling while being timed is no walk in the park, but Ulf had other challenges that couldn’t stop him.
” ..I’ve always had one hand, and it’s really all I know, and I’ve learn to do everything with one.”
Ulf trains 4-5 days a week, sometimes his light days…. aren’t exactly that.
“..When you’re going out for a bike ride for 112 miles, you might be on the bike 5…6….7…
hours depending on how fast you are. ”
The triathlons are worldwide, Ulf began competing in 2010 when Ironman came to Syracuse but his introduction wasn’t your average situation.
” Ultimately it was the end of 2017 that I finished number 1 in the world, for challenged athletes and I repeated that again at the end of 2019, so 2020 All World Athlete status, it feels pretty good.
Ulf needed a bike that would assist him with his physical challenges and put him in the best position to win. This work of art cost over $10,000.
” … We have the foreaerm pads that are slightly off center, because the different arm lengths that I have and we chopped this bar so that I have enough room ”
The Trek Sped concept bike was created by Dennis Sacket at Syracuse bicycle which was tailored for Ulf because he could end up cycling for over 5 hours at a time.
Page 2
” this airo bar we flared out to the outside of the bike,so thats as I’m down, I can put my left arm and I can ge some leverage and then with the right as im lock I’m able to lock in so I can use the electronic shifting.
Ulf’s bike also has the ability to be used in the comfort of his home, while he uses a tool that makes his workout as realistic as possible.
” So I’m racing with Zwift, thats an app that sinks to your trainer and you have different courses that you can go out and ride. Typically the give Zwatopia, which is zwift world , then theres others cities throughout the week that you can use Richmond, London, or New York
”
Ulf has completed seven full Iron man, races at 70.3 miles each and has racked up countless medals over his 10 year journey. As he gears up in his red helmet he’s heading for Georgia to qualify for a worldwide rank.

ULF’S ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO BATTLE AGAINST THE BEST PHYSICALLY
CHALLENGED ATHLETES LATER ON THIS YEAR AT THE OLYPMICS IN TOKYO. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M ROBERT BRUIN.
THE SPORTS MEDIA CENTER COLLABORATES WITH BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO BRING THEM TO SPEAK TO STUDENTS AND SHARE THEIR EXPEREICNES.
JOSH FINE, A PRODUCER AT HBO REAL SPORTS SPOKE TO STUDENTS YESTERDAY ABOUT HIS CAREER AND GAVE ADVICE TO THOSE TRANSISITIING FROM COLLEGE TO THE WORKFORCE.
AND YOU GOT THE CHANCE TO SEE HIM.
RIGHT MICHELLE?
Fine told students that reporting is a skill you can master now but storytelling is a
skill that you will continue to work on throughout your career.
“In terms of storytelling I think that is harder, At least for me that came later in life, I think I was pretty good as a reporter early in my career. I think I am still coming to me it is more of an art and more of a craft.”
He also said to make sure to be curious as a journalist.
“another thing is just not accepting the conventional ways to mun things. I always find it useful
But in his life long career in journalism fine said there is always room to grow and
flourish.
“you never sort of get perfect at that. That’s the glory of it way it’s something that you can spend a whole career on to improve on that.”

THE SPORTS MEDIA CENTER PUTS ON DIFFERENT EFFECTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WHERE BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS TALK TO STUDENTS AND THEY CAN NETWORK AND ANY STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO COME.
DINING HALLS ON CAMPUS ARE GIVING STUDENTS THE OPTION TO HELP CHOOSE WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE ON THE MENU.
JILLIAN ANDREWS HAS THIS WEEKS EDITION OF EAT AND TELL…
LAST WEEK WAS FEEDBACK WEDNESDAY HERE ON CAMPUS.
A TASTING COUNTER WAS SET-UP AT EACH OF THE DINING HALLS.
STUDENTS COULD TRY THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS, THEN FILL OUT A SURVEY ABOUT HOW THEY LIKED EVERYTHING.
THESE SURVERYS HELP FOOD SERVICE DECIDE WHAT ITEMS TO ADD TO THE MENU…
“Hi guys, here we are at Sadler Dining Hall with Keone with Food Services, tell us whats going on here. Hi! Today we’e having a feedback Wednesday, we do this where vendors bring in different foods that students might enjoy and they test it and let us know if they like it Okay great so lets see whats going on”
“Alright here is a veggie bite…we’re asking students to fill out a survey about what they like…
” We’re here again at Feedback Wednesday…”
“Look at all that bacon and look at all that cheese…this is really good, really good. and the sauce…”
A BIG THANK YOU TO KEONE FOR SHOWING ME AROUND THE DINING HALLS.
MAKE SURE YOU TUNE IN NEXT WEEK FOR ANOTHER EDITION OF EAT AND TELL.
COMING UP HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL ONE LACROSEE PLAYER’S
TOUCHING STORY ABOUT WHAT HE SEES AND DOESN’T SEE BEFORE EACH GAME.
BUT FIRST AN INJURY MORE MENTAL THAN PHYSICAL. I’LL TELL YOU ABOUT ONE LACROSSE PLAYER’S JOURNEY THROUGH RECOVERY COMING UP NEXT.
ACL INJURIES ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON INJURIES IN COLLEGE ATHLETES, AND JULIANNA GOT TO SIT DOWN WITH ONE ATHLETE WHO EXPERIENCED THIS INJURY.
YES, MICHELLE, THESE INJURIES AFFECT AROUND 2 HUNDRED THOUSAND
PEOPLE A YEAR IN THE UNITED STATES ACCORDING TO THE MAYO CLINIC.
THIS WEEK, I GOT TO LOOK AT THE IMPACT ACL TEARS HAD ON AN SU WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER.
MORGAN WIDNER AND KYLA ZIPOLSKI AT THE BLOCK “S” FOR THIS DRAW CONTROL.
I WAS IN THE CARRIER DOME, WE WERE PLAYING THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBANY ON
FEBRUARY 22, 2018,
IT’S A DAY I WILL NEVER FORGET FOR THE REST OF
MY LIFE. AND SO I WON IT BEHIND ME AND I WAS RUNNING DOWN TOWARDS GOAL
AND BASICALLY, A GIRL KIND OF PUSHED ME FROM BEHIND, PLANTED WEIRD,
STARTED GOING AND MY LEG JUST PRACTICALLY GAVE OUT.
I HEARD TWO LOUD POPS AND THEN FELT LIKE A SHOTGUN HAD GONE OFF IN MY KNEE
THE RIGHT THAT KNEE JUST TOOK AN AWKWARD TURN.
AND ALL I REMEMBER FROM THAT MOMENT WAS I WAS SCREAMING REALLY
REALLY LOUD, I KIND OF BLACKED OUT FOR A SECOND AND THE NEXT THING I KNEW I HAD MY HEAD COACH BEHIND ME AND TWO OF MY TRAINERS TRYING TO HELP ME OFF THE FIELD.
-PKG Duration: 1:40
THE ACL, THE ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT, IT’S EITHER FROM STEPPING OR
FROM A COLLISION AND EITHER PIVOT OR SHIFT AND THE LIGAMENT TEARS EITHER IN HALF OR A PIECE COMES OFF OF T HE FEMUR OR THE TIBIA.
WIDNER IS OUT GOT TO HOPE ITS A SPEEDY RECOVERY AND SHE CAN COME BACK AND HELP THIS TEAM DOWN THE STRETCH.
IT’S USUALLY NINE MONTHS TO A YEAR, IF YOU ARE A FEMALE, THEY USUALLY TRY TO PUSH IT LONGER CLOSE TO A YEAR.
BECAUSE YOU NEED TO HAVE EVERYTHING AS STRONG AND STABLE AS POSSIBLE BEFORE RETURNING BACK TO ATHLETICS.
YOU WANNA DO PREHAB AND GET YOU BACK TO A CERTAIN LEVEL AS MUCH AS
YOU CAN FUNCTIONING GOING INTO TO SURGERY SO THAT WHEN YOU COME
OUT YOU ARE GOOD.
I WOULD SAY TEARING YOUR ACL IS 80 PERCENT MENTAL, 20 PERCENT PHYSICAL.
IT’S OBVIOUSLY AN INSANE AMOUNT OF PAIN, THAT YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH WITH THE REHAB PROCESS BEFORE SURGERY, THEN SURGERY AND REHABBING FOR ALMOST ABOUT A YEAR.
IT’S SOMETHING TO MENTALLY DEBILITATING IT’S SOMETHING THAT REALLY BREAKS YOU DOWN AS A PERSON.
WIDNER IS BACK ON THE FIELD FOR THE ORANGE THIS SEASON AND SAYS THAT
THE MENTAL BATTLE OF OVERCOMING THIS INJURY HAS GIVEN HER A GREATER RESPECT FOR THE SPORT AND HAS HELPED HER PERFORM BETTER ON THE FIELD.
AND WHILE WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYERS GO THROUGH THEIR OWN INJURY
BATTLES, A MEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER WENT THROUGH A DIFFERENT BATTLE OF HIS OWN
OUR COLE JOHNSON IS HERE TO TELL US THE STORY OF ONE SYRACUSE
ATHLETE WHO GREW UP WITH ONE MISSING PIECE TO HIS LIFE
THAT’S RIGHT MICHELLE. THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT PEOPLE TAKE FOR GRANTED. FOR JAKOB PHAUP OF THE SYRACUSE MEN’S LACROSSE TEAM, HE’S TAKEN ONE BIG MISFORTUNE AND TURNED IT INTO A WHOLE LOT OF POSITIVE.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, A RELATIONSHIP WITH A VERY SPECIAL SOMEONE.
SYRACUSE APPEARS TO HAVE WON THE FIRST FACE-OFF OF 2019…
AT THE X IS WHERE JAKOB PHAUP HAS MADE A LIVING. YEAR THREE OF BEING A FACE-OFF SPECIALIST.
“I NEVER THOUGHT IN A MILLION YEARS THAT I’D PLAY LACROSSE IN
COLLEGE…LACROSSE WAS LIKE A SPORT THAT I JUST PLAYED BECAUSE IT WAS
FUN TO ME, IT WAS RELAXING. I DIDN’T EVEN FACE-OFF UNTIL FRESHMAN YEAR
OF HIGH SCHOOL.”
BEFORE EACH FACE-OFF, HE SCANS THE CROWD. A REMINDER OF THE HOURNEY
HE’S TAKEN. ONE THAT ISN’T PICTURE PERFECT.”)
“USUALLY ALL THE KIDS HAD THEIR FATHER IN THEIR CORNER. LIKE I’D HAVE ONE OF MY FRIENDS FATHER’S COME UP AND SAY ‘OH DO YOU WANT ME TO
COACH?’ …WHAT WENT THROUGH MY MIND WAS LIKE ‘OH I’M NOT
NORMAL…YOU’D HAVE PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES WHERE YOU’D HAVE
THE FATHER AND THE MOTHER. IT WAS JUST MY MOM.”
IN HIS BIO, JUST THREE WORDS TELL THE STORY
“I WOULD MAKE UP LIES IN SCHOOL AND SAY THAT MY DAD TOOK ME OUT FOR
BREAKFAST OR MY DAD TOOK ME HERE AND I NEVER MET MY DAD IN MY WHOLE
LIFE.”
PHAUP’S FATHER LEFT BEFORE HE COULD EVER MEET HIM. THE ONLY GLIMPSE OF A FATHER WERE A FEW PHONE CALLS AND SOME PICTURES.
“ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WAS THE TOUGHEST PART. YOU’D SEE EVERYBODY WITH
THEIR DADS. THAT’S WHEN WE STARTED SEEING A THERAPIST AND HAVING
COPING MECHANISMS TO HELP.”
AT A THIRD GRADE OPEN HOUSE, BETH OPENED JAKE’S DESK WHERE JAKE MADE
A CHART: THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN, MIGHT HAPPEN AND WILL NEVER HAPPEN… ONE THING ON THE PAPER STOOD OUT…
Page 2
IT READ,”I WILL NEVER SEE MY DAD.”
“I BELIEVE I WENT OUT OF THE ROOM AND CRIED. IT WAS A VERY DIFFICULT TIME
FOR ME. IT WAS HEARTBREAKING.”
BUT THEN JAKOB FOUND LACROSSE
“HE STRUGGLED BEHAVIORALLY BECAUSE OF THE ADHD IN SCHOOL. I ALWAYS
KEPT AND HELD SPORTS OVER HIS HEAD.”
THE ONLY THING MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE OUTCOME ON THE FIELD, IS THE ONE PERSON OFF OF IT.
“I WOLDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT MY MOM. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. SHE’S THE REASON
I’M SUCCESSFUL TO THIS DAY…I COULDN’T PLAY A GAME IF I DIDN’T SEE MY MOM,
OR JUST LIKE KNOWING MY MOM IS IN THE STANDS AND SEEING HER IN THE STANDS IS A SAFETY BLANKET FOR ME.”
Page 3
AN UNBREAKABLE BOND BETWEEN A MOTHER AND HER SON
“I AM EXTREMELY PROUD. HE HAS COME A LONG WAY. HE HAS BEATEN THE ODDS
EDUCATIONALLY. HE HAS BEATEN THE ODDS IN ALL WAYS.”
“I DON’T HAVE A FTAHER BUT I HAVE A GREAT MOTHER RAISING ME. THIS IS SICK
AND I’M GOING TO LOVE IT AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT LIFE TOGETHER.”
PHAUP’S MOTHER BETH HAS STILL ONLY MISSED ONE OF HIS COLLEGIATE
GAMES, AND SHE’S WATCHED JAKOB GROW RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER EYES.
THREE GAMES INTO HIS JUNIOR SEASON, PHAUP RANKS SECOND NATIONALLY IN
FACE-OFF WIN PERCENTAGE. HIS .765 WIN PERCENTAGE IS JUST SECOND TO NOTRE DAME’S CHARLES LEONARD.
Page 1
THE 3-0 SYRACUSE MEN FACE-OFF AGAIN ON FRIDAY IN THE DOME VS HOBART, BUT THEY’RE NOT THE ONLY RANKED TEAM AT SYRACUSE.
THE WOMEN’S LACROSSE TEAM, RANKED FOURTH IN THE NATION, TOOK THEIR 4-1 RECORD INTO MONDAY IN A MATCHUP WITH THE COLGATE RED RAIDERS.
11 DIFFERENT PLAYERS WOULD REACH THE SCORE SHEET. MEGAN CARNEY LEADING THE WAY WITH FOUR GOALS. SAM SWART AND EMILY (HARRIS-CHUCK) EACH ADDING A HAT TRICK AS WELL.
BEING THE LEADING GOAL-GETTER IN THE ENTIRE NATION WITH 30 GOALS THROUGH SIX GAMES.
MEGAN CARNEY TIED FOR 8TH IN THE NATION WITH 17 GOALS SO FAR IN HER SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN.
THE ORANGE WOULD TAKE THIS ONE IN DOMINATING FASHION, WINNING 21-6 OVER THEIR IN-STATE OPPONENT.
THEY IMPROVE TO 5-1, AND TAKE THEIR NATION-LEADING OFFENSE IN GOALS
SCORED INTO A MEETING WITH THE MARYLAND TERRAPINS ON FRIDAY IN THE
FROM ONE TEAM AT SYRACUSE WHO’S SMOOTH SAILING RIGHT NOW, TO A TEAM THAT HAS THEIR BACKS AGAINST THE WALL.
A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM TO BASICALLY WIN OUT IN ORDER TO GO DANCING.
TONIGHT, THE ORANGE TRAVEL TO PITTSBURGH AS THEY TRY TO CONTINUE THEIR SUCCESS AGAINST THE PANTHERS. THEY HAVE WON EACH OF THE LAST SIX MEETINGS WITH THEIR FORMER BIG EAST RIVAL.
THE ORANGE WON THE FIRST MEETING BACK ON JANUARY 25. BUDDY BOEHEIM LED THE WAY WITH 21 POINTS, KNOCKING DOWN FOUR TRIPLES.
BOEHEIM AND ELIJAH HUGHES WALK INTO THE PETERSON EVENTS CENTER AS
ONE OF THE TOP THREE POINT DUOS IN THE NATION COMBINING FOR 154 THREES ON THE YEAR.
YOU CAN CATCH THAT ACTION AT 7 O’CLOCK TONIGHT ON ACC NETWORK.
