GOOD MORNING. I’M BAILEY ARRENDONDO. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL. AND I’M MARSHA AUGUSTIN. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR FIRST HALF HOUR.
A NEW WAY TO GET AROUND ON CAMPUS STUDENTS REACT TO DEADLY VIRUS THE BREAKDWON ON SEARCH EFFORTS FOR MISSING SU STUDENT ALL THAT PLUS YOUR WEATHER COMING UP ON THIS EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
OUR TOP STORY THIS HOUR… NEW YOUR STATE POLICE ARE JOINING SEARCH EFFORTS FOR MISSING S-U STUDENT ALLAN GONZALEZ.
OUR ALEXANDRA JENNER-JAHN IS LIVE IN STUDIO TO BREAKDOWN WHAT WE KNOW UP TO THIS POINT.
AN S-U STUDENT HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE JANUARY NINETEENTH AND YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THE STATE POLICE TEAM MADE A SECOND EFFORT TO SEARCH ONONDAGA CREEK FOR 22-YEAR OLD ALLAN GONZALEZ.
LET’S BREAK DOWN WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR.
GONZALEZ’S ROOMMATE CALLED POLICE ON JANUARY 21 TO REPORT GONZALEZ MISSING. I REACHED OUT TO THE ROOMMATE, WHO DECLINED AN INTERVIEW.
AFTER THE MISSING PERSON INVESTIGATION BEGAN, SOMEONE CALLED POLICE TO SAY SHE THOUGHT SHE HAD A BRIEF INTERACTION WITH GONZALEZ AT BENJAMIN’S ON FRANLIN IN ARMORY SQUARE THE NIGHT HE WENT MISSING.
POLICE ALONG WITH GONZALEZ’S FAMILY AND THE HELP OF SURVEILANCE VIDEO WERE ABLE TO VERIFY THAT GONZALEZ WAS AT BENJAMIN’S THAT NIGHT.
A HAT GONZALEZ WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN WEARING WAS FOUND NEAR ONONDAGA CREEK.
FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND VIDEO EVIDENCE SHOWED GONZALEZ FALLING INTO ONONDAGA CREEK AROUND 3 A-M NEAR WHERE HIS HAT WAS LATER FOUND.
LOOKING NOW AT 340 WEST WASHINGTON STREET
SOMEONE CALLED POLICE LAST WEEK SAYING THE SAW A MALE’S BODY NEAR THE ONONDAGA CREEK. THIS TIP AND GONZALEZ’S INVESTIGATION ARE NOW THOUGHT TO BE LINKED.
A SEARCH WAS DONE OF THE CREEK FOR GONZALEZ, BUT POLICE SAY ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS HAMPERED THE SEARCH. THAT’S WHY NEW YORK STATE POLICE ATTEMPTED THE SEARCH AGAIN LAST NIGHT.
GOING NOW TO S SOUTH STREET TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
I HAD AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SYRACUSE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER, SARGEANT MATTHEW MALINOWKSI WHO IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO CONTINUE SEARCHING AND SENDING IN TIPS.
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THIS CASE, YOU CAN CONTACT SYRACUSE POLICE AT 315-442-5252 OR 9-1-1.
ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN, FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE IN NEW YORK ARE BEING TESTED FOR THE DEADLY CORONA VIRUS. THE DISEASE HAS KILLED OVER 130 PEOPLE ACROSS THE WOLRD.
OUR MARIA TRIVEL-PIECE JOINS US LIVE IN STUDIO TO TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THIS VIRUS AND HOW STUDENTS ARE REACTING.
CORONA VIRUSES ARE DISEASES IN MAMMALS AND BIRDS THAT CAUSE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS. IN SOME CASES, THEY LOOK LIKE THE COMMON COLD, BUT IN OTHERS, THEY CAN BE DEADLY. THE RECENT STRAIN OF THE VIRUS THAT STARTED IN CHINA AND SPREAD TO OTHER AREAS SEEMS TO BE THE LATTER; BECAUSE OF THIS, SOME SYRACUSE STUDENTS ARE CONCERNED.
(“IT SEEMS TO BE OUT OF CONTROL AT THIS MOMENT.”)
I’VE NOTICED I’VE BEEN A LOT MORE, ON TOP OF LIKE WASHING MY HANDS OR MORESO THAN USUAL. SO, I’M ALWAYS AFRAID OF LIKE VIRUSES AND STUFF LIKE THAT. STUFF LIKE THAT KIND OF SCARES ME. SO, I’M ALWAYS AFTRAID OF LIKE VIRUSES AND EVERYTHING SO LIKE STUFF LIKE THAT KIND OF SCARES ME.
BUT OTHER STUDENTS AREN’T QUITE AS WORRIED.
SO, I DIDN’T GET THE BIRD FLU WHEN IT CAME OUT, SO I DON’T THINK I’M GOING TO GET THIS ONE.
UNLESS I START SEEING LIKE REALLY HIGH REPORTS, OF IT SHOWING UP IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK OR NEW JERSEY, I’M REALLY NOT ALL THAT WORRIED ABOUT IT.
DAVID LARSEN IS AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH WHO SPECIALIZES IN GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH. HE IS STILL UNSURE OF WHETHER CONCERN OVER THE VIRUS IS WARRANTED.
THERE’S A LOF OF ANXIETY AROUND THE CORONOAVIRUS BECAUSE IT’S NEW AND WE DON’T KNOW WHAT EXACTLY THE DIFFERENT DYNAMICS OF THE INFECTIOUS DISEASE IS.
HE SAYS IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT IT CAN BE TRANSMITTED FROM HUMAN TO HUMAN.
AND THEN THE NEXT QUESTION IS, HOW SEVERE IS IT? UH, CURRENT REPORTS SUGGEST THAT IT’S NOT AS DEADLY AS MERS AND SARS WERE. THOSE WERE QUITE SCARY VIRUSES, BUT THAT IT’S MORE EASILY TRANSMITTED. SO, THERE’S A LOT OF ANXIETY BUT IT’S ALSO HOPEFUL THAT THE VIRUS IS NOT EXTREMELY DEADLY.
SO FAR THERE HAVE BEEN FIVE RECORDED CASES IN THE UNITED STATES. SYRACUSE UNIVERISTY HAS EXPANDED ITS TRAVEL REGISTRY REQUIRING ALL MEMBERS OF THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY TO REGISTER ANY INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL. THEY ALSO ASK STUDENTS TO REPORT ANY TRAVEL TO CHINA WITHIN THE LAST 14 DAYS.
REPORTING LIVE IN STUDIO, I’M __MARIA TRIVELPIECE__________ FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AVOIDING THE COLD IS A WAY TO STAY HEALTHY, AND NOW SYRACUSE STUDENTS WILL NO LONGER HAVE TO WALK IN THE SNOW.
OUR REPORTER JULIANNA DER-ZO JOINS US LIVE FROM THE UNIVERSITY’S NEW TROLLEY SYSTEM.
HEY GUYS, CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS TROLLEY ! IT WAS CUSTOM BUILT FOR SU, AND ACCESSIBILY WAS A PRIORITY. THERE ARE RAMPS AND LOW FLOORS. I GOT TO RIDE THE TROLLEY, TAKE A LOOK!
HAVE YOU SEEN SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S LATEST ADDITION TO CAMPUS?
THE NEW TROLLEY SYSTEM ARRIVED IN JANUARY FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER.
THE ROUTES INCLUDE ONES PREVIOUSLY COVERED BY BIRNIE BUS VEHICLES. THE DECISION TO CHANGE TO AN INHOUSE SYSTEM WAS AN INVESTMENT AT A GOOD TIME FOR STUDENTS ACCORDING TO SYRACUSE TRANSPORTATION SERVICES.
THE FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS HAS BEEN VERY POSITIVE, BECAUSE THEY ARE ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE COLD ELEMENTS, JUMP ON A TROLLEY AND HOP ACROSS CAMPUS
JOSEPH CARFI IS THE DIRECTOR OF PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, AND MENTIONS THE TROLLEYS HAVE BEEN LONG IN THE WORKS, ESPECIALLY THEIR CUSTOM DESIGN.
WE WANT SOMETHING TO STAND OUT, THAT WOULD APPEAL TO PEOPLE AND THAT THE STUDENTS WALKING ACROSS CAMPUS, THEY KNOW, THAT THE WAY ITS WRAPPED, THAT, THAT’S A SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY VEHICLE, THEY CAN FLAG IT DOWN AND THEY CAN RIDE IT.
JOSEPH CARFI IS THE DIRECTOR OF PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION SERVICES AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, AND MENTIONS THE TROLLEYS HAVE BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR A WHILE, ESPECIALLY THEIR CUSTOM DESIGN. DANA CASULLO IS A NEWHOUSE STUDENT RIDING THE TROLLEY FOR HER VERY FIRST TIME AND SHE SAYS SHE MAY BECOME A FREQUENT RIDER.
I REALLY LIKE IT, IT’S REALLY CLEAN IN HERE, AND I LIKE THE WOOD INTERIOR, AND IT’S VERY NEW, AND IT’S NICE BECAUSE IT COMES TO CAMPUS WEST, AND THAT’S WHERE I LIVE AND I DON’T WANT TO GO IN THE COLD.
THE TRANSPORTATION TEAM IS ALSO WORKING ON AN APP FOR THE TROLLEYS SO STUDENTS CAN TRACK THEIR LOCATION. ADDITIONAL ROUTES HAVE BEEN ADDED AS WELL AND CAN BE FOUND ON THEIR WEBSITE ON NCC NEWS.COM. REPORTING LIVE, I’M JULIANNA D’URZO FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.

“DR. KINGS LAST SPEECH AT SU WAS IN 1965 TO A SOLD OUT CROWD WITH A MESSAGE, “THE TIME IS ALWAYS RIGHT TO DO RIGHT,” AND IT WAS CLEAR THAT MESSAGE WILL FOREVER BE INGRAINED IN THE UNIVERSITY.
IT WAS A NIGHT FILLED WITH PERFORMANCES, UNSUNG HERO’S AND A COMMON THEME AGAINST RACISM. THE CHANCELLOR SAID HE IS GRATEFUL FOR THOSE WHO HAVE COME FORWARD WITH COURAGE
