GOOD MORNING. I’M JILLIAN ANDREWS.

YOU’VE SEEN IT ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THE CORONAVIRUS HAS AFFECTED PEOPLE, BUSINESS, AND NOW UNIVERSITIES.
REPORTER MICHELLE KNEZOVIC ATTENDED VICE CHANCELLOR MIKE HAYNIE’S PRESS CONFERENCE ON \
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY HAS TAKEN ACTION AND TRANSITIONING CLASSES TO ONLINE STARTING AT THE END OF THE DAY ON FRIDAY. THE VICE CHANCELLOR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY MIKE HAYNIE SPOKE OUT YESTERDAY THE UNIVERSITIES PLANS MOVING FORWARD AND WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCED THAT AFTER SPRING BREAK CLASSES WILL BE CONTINUING ONLINE UNTIL MARCH 30TH.
VICE CHANCELLOR MIKE HAYNIE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT ONCE STUDENTS LEAVE FOR SPRING BREAK THE UNIVERSITY DOES NOT WANT THEM COMING BACK UNTIL AT LEAST MARCH 31ST.
” WHEN STUDENTS LEAVE FOR SPRING BREAK, RETURNING TO SYRACUSE. THE IDEA OF TRANSITIONING TO ONLINE EDUCATION. INHERENT ON THAT IDEA STUDENTS WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THEIR DORMITORIES ONCE THEY LEAVE”
AT THE END OF THE BREAK WHEN STUDENTS ARE THINKING ABOUT PACKING, THEY NEED TO BE PREPARED WHEN PACKING.
“WE ASK OUR STUDENTS THAT THEY THINK DIFFERENTLY WHEN THEY HEAD HOME FOR BREAK. POTENTIALLY ABOUT PACKING AND GOING HOME FOR BREAK THEY TAKE THEM ALL THE THINGS THEY NEED THEIR ACADEMIC STATUS WHEN THEY LEAVE. TEXTBOOKS, LAPTOPS, DEVICES, AND CERTAINLY ANYTHING ELSE THEY WANT TO HAVE WITH THEM. TO GIVE IN THERE IS MORE OF A POTENTIAL THAT THEY WILL BE AWAY FROM CAMPUS AN EXTENDED PERIOD THEY WILL BE LONGER THAN SPRING BREAK.”
DURING THE BREAK THE UNIVERSITY WILL BE WORKING WITH PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS ON WHAT STEPS TO MOVE FORWARD
“AGAIN, AFFECTIVE END OF DAY ON FRIDAY AND THROUGH AT LEAST THE 30TH OF MARCH. WE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS, TO EVALUATE THE SITUATION RELATED TO THE CORONAVIRUS AND MAKE SUBSEQUENT DECISIONS WHETHER OR NOT WE WILL RESUME RESIDENTIAL INSTRUCTION OR CONTINUE IN AN ONLINE LEARNING MODE.”
ALL UPDATES REGARDING THE CORNAVIRUS AND SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY WILL BE UPDATED ON SYRACUSE.EDU/CORNAVIRUS
WE WILL CONTINUING COVERING THIS STORY AS IT DEVELOPS
MORNINGS ON THE HILL MICHELLE KNEZOVIC, BACK TO YOU GUYS
OUR JILLIAN ANDREWS IS AT THE MONITOR TO EXPLAIN SOME MYTHS ABOUT THE NEW CORONAVIRUS.
AS THE FEAR OF COVID-19 CONTINUES TO GROW,
THE CENTERS OF DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OR “CDC” AND
THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION OR “WHO” ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THE PUBLIC HAS THE CORRECT INFORMATION.
-MON DURATION: 1:40
ONE MYTH SURROUNDING THE VIRUS IS THAT COLD WEATHER CAN KILL IT.
ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
THIS IS BECAUSE NO MATTER THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE, THE HUMAN BODY REMINS BETWEEN 97 AND 99 DEGREES.
EVEN IF YOU LIVE IN A REGION EXPERINCING TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING, YOU ARE STILL AT RISK OF CONTRACTING THE VIRUS FROM AN INFECTED PERSON.
CORONAVIRUS IS NOT TRANSMITTED BY MOSQUITOS.
THE C-D-C SAYS THE CORONAVIRUS IS A RESPIRATORY ILLNESS.
THEREFORE, IT IS SPREAD BY DROPLETS PRODUCED BY AN INFECTED PERSON. STAY AWAY FROM INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE SNEEZING OR COUGHING.
EVEN IF AN INDIVIDUAL IS CLEARED HEALTHY BY A THERMAL SCANNER, IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE NOT INFECTED.
“WHO” SAYS THAT THERMAL SCANNER WILL DETECT WHETHER SOMEONE HAS A FEVER.
BUT AN INDIVIDUAL CAN BE INFECTED WITHOUT SHOWING SYMPTOMS.
EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT SHOWING SYMPTOMS, YOU CAN STILL SPREAD THE VIRUS.
A12 CORONA MYTH-MON DURATION: 1:40
IT CAN TAKE ANY WHERE FROM TWO TO TEN DAYS TO START EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS.
SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN BECOME INFECTED WITH THE
CORONAVIRUS IF YOUR PACKAGE COMES FROM COUNTRY’S REPORTING CASES OF THE VIRUS.
ACCORDING TO “WHO”, THIS IS NOT SOMETHING PEOPLE NEED TO BE SERIOUSLY CONCERNED WITH.
IT WOULD BE HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THE VIRUS COULD SUVIVE ALL THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS DURING TRAVEL.
IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A SURFACE, USE DISINFECTING SPRAY AND WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER CONTACT.
ANOTHER TOPIC PEOPLE ARE GETTING CONFUSED ABOUT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN “QUARANTINE” AND “ISOLATION.”
ISOLATION IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE DISEASE AND ARE CONTAGIOUS.
QUARANTINE IS FOR HEALTHY PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE INFECTION BUT HAVE NOT YET TESTED POSITIVE.
FOR UP-TO-DATE NUMBERS ON THOSE INFECTED
INCLUDING MAPS OF INFECTED REGIONS,
YOU CAN VISIT THE CENTERS OF DISEASE CONTROL AND PERVENTION OR THE
SU HELD A CORONA VIRUS FORUM TO DISCUSS WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE. ONE HOT COMMODITY THAT PEOPLE ARE WEARING, AND YOU CAN NO LONGER FIND IN STORES, IS A HUGE NO IN KEEPING YOU SAFE FROM THE CORONA VIRUS.
(REPORTER)
THE RESPIRATORY MASK THAT YOU SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE WEARING WAS DISCUSSED AT SU’S CORONA VIRUS FORUM AND EXPERTS SAY, IT’S A NO GO!
” I GOT THIS MASK A MONTH AGO AND I DON’T HAVE MUCH LEFT.”
AND NEITHER DOES CVS
CHARLES CHU NEVER LEAVES HOME WITHOUT IT. HIS MASK THAT IS!
“I USE ONE PER DAY!”
THE SENIOR AT SU SAYS, IT’S THE ONLY WAY HE BELIEVES HE CAN AVOID GETTING THE CORONA VIRUS.
“I CHOOSE TO WEAR THE MASK BECAUSE I THINK THAT IT PREVENTS BACTERIA FROM GETTING INTO YOUR FIVE SENSES. IT ACTS AS PROTECTION.”
HOWEVER, AT THE CORONA VIRUS FORUM HELD AT SU’S FALK COLLEGE, DAVID LARSEN, ASSOCIATE
PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH SAYS THE MASK ARE A NO! IT WILL NOT PROTECT YOU FROM COVID-19.
“THE CORONA VIRUS IS TRANSMITTED THROUGH HEAVY DROPLETS THAT CONTAMINATE SURFACES AND THEN OUR HANDS TOUCH THOSE SURFACES AND THEN WE TOUCH OUR FACE AND THAT’S THE TRANSMISSION CHAIN.
THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS THAT ARE DEALING WITH COUGHING PATIENTS ON A VERY INTIMATE LEVEL AND IF YOU ARE SICK THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE A MASK. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, PLEASE LEAVE THE MASK TO THE HEALTHCARE WORKERS.”
CURRENTLY WITH 1000 REPORTED CASES OF THE CORONA VIRUS IN THE U S, LARSEN SAYS, THIS IS WHERE WE GO FROM HERE.
WITH THE EXCITEMENT OF TRAVELING AWAY FOR OUR EXTENDED SPRING BREAK, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE TAKING EVERY SAFETY PRECAUTION POSSIBLE WHILE BEING AWAY.
OUR GABRIELLE RILES IS LIVE IN STUDIO WITH MORE.
MANY STUDENTS WILL BE REALLY EAGER TO LEAVE THEIR DORMS AND
APARTMENTS FOR THE NOW TWO WEEK BREAK AND MAY FORGET THE MOST
IMPORTANT THING … WHICH IS TO LOCK THE DOORS AND WINDOWS IN THEIR HOME. LOCKING YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS IS THE FIRST STEP TO ENSURING YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS ARE KEPT SAFE.
SOME STUDENTS MAY BE LEAVING THEIR CAR BEHIND DURING THEIR TRIP BUT
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE OUR VEHICLES IN A SAFE PLACE. WHETHER THAT’S INSIDE OF A GARAGE OR A PARKING AREA WHERE THERE IS SECURITY.
WHEN ARRIVING AT THE AIRPORT MAKE SURE TO WEAR PLASTIC GLOVES AND
KEEP DISINFECTANT WIPES ON HAND. WE TOUCH SO MANY THINGS WHILE GOING
THROUGH T-S-A, WAITING ON THE PLANE, AND BOARDING. BE SURE TO WIPE THE
AREA WHERE YOU ARE SITTING AS WELL. MOST PLANES TRAVEL TO MANY CITIES PER DAY AND SOMETIMES YOU AREN’T THE FIRST PERSON THAT SITS IN YOUR SEAT.
AND OF COURSE, BE VIGILANT AND AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. TRAVEL IN GROUPS AND SHARE YOUR LOCATION WITH A FRIEND IF POSSIBLE.
WITH THOSE PRECAUTIONS, YOU ARE SURE TO BE SAFE DURING SPRING BREAK.
HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK ORANGE NATION. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M GABRIELLE RILES.
SPRING BREAK STARTS THIS FRIDAY AND WE ALL NEED TO GET TO WHERE WE ARE GOING. WEATHER IS GOING TO IMPACT THAT.
OUR CHIANN NOBREGA IS LIVE OUT ON UNIVERSITY AVE TO TELL US WHAT TO EXPECT FOR TODAY AND OUR TRAVELS.
HOW DOES IT LOOK OUT THERE?
COMING UP HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL…
WE TAKE YOU LIVE OUTSIDE CROUSE HINDS HALL WITH AN UPDATE ON THE SIT
IN.
ALSO COMING UP… SOME UPCOMING SHOWS AT THE SENTOR SCHOLL OF MUSIC ARE BEING CANCELLED.
STAY WITH US FOR THOSE STORIES AND MUCH MORE HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGS ON THE HILL. THE CORONA VIRUS ISN’T ONLY CANCELLING CLASSES, IT HAS ALSO AFFECTED ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE CAMPUS. THE SETNOR SCHOOL OF MUSIC HAS CANCELLED UPCOMING PERFORMANCES INCLUDING LAST NIGHT’S SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
GRADUATE STUDENT, JON HARRITY SAYS HE IS UPSET BY THIS.
IN ADDITION TO NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE THEIR HARD WORK COME TO FRUITION, HARRITY SAYS THE SITUATION IS ALSO DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF HOW IT AFFECTS HIS PROGRAM.
AND, HARRITY SAYS, IT’S ALSO FRUSTRATING BECAUSE PERFORMING LIVE IS JUST DIFFERENT.
HARRITY ALSO SAID MANY OF HIS CLASSMATES ARE ALSO FRUSTRATED, BUT HE UNDERSTANDS THAT SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS ARE IMPORTANT.
ALTHOUGH THE SETNOR MUSIC CONCERT IS BEING CANCELLED, WE HAVE A
PERFORMANCE FROM A STUDENT TODAY. OUR REPORTER SARAH EL-SHEH WATCHED ANISH GOSH PERFORM EARLIER TODAY.
ONE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY MUSICIAN HAS BEEN PERFORMING SINCE HE WAS
YOU CAN CHECK OUT ANISH’S MUSIC ON ALL STREAMING PLATFORMS. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M SARAH AL-SHAIKH.
STILL TO COME HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY. FIND OUT WHY.
STAY WITH US–THAT STORY AND MORE JUST AHEAD.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE TAKING LEARNING TO A LOCAL CHURCH…
OUR SARAH AL-SHAIKH SHARES HOW THEY ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE SYRACUSE COMMUNITY.
USUALLY OUR WEEKENDS ARE SPENT RECOVERING FROM A CRAZY WEEK OR AN
EVEN CRAZIER FRIDAY NIGHT. BUT FOR SOME SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, THEIR SATURDAY’S ARE SPENT TEACHING OTHERS.
“YOU READ THESE TO ME AND I’M GOING TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.”
TUTORING CAN BE COSTLY, TIME CONSUMING OR NOT EVEN OFFERED FOR SOME ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SYRACUSE… AND THAT’S BEEN AN ISSUE FOR ONE FATHER.
“FOR MONTHS, I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR TUTORING FOR MY SONS. SYRACUSE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS A VERY LOW READING LEVEL FOR THE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.”
AHZANAYAH JUDAH’S TWO SONS COME TO THE FREE DROP-IN TUTORING WITH SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. IT’S ONLY BEEN THREE WEEKS, BUT JUDAH SAYS HIS SONS LOOK FORWARD TO COMING.
“THEY ENJOY IT NOW. IT’S PART OF OUR SCHEDULE TO COME EVERY SATURDAY AT 10 A-M.”
THESE TUTORING SESSIONS ARE ALSO A PART OF TUTOR, SAMMI CHI’S WEEKLY ROUTINE.
“IT’S GREAT BECAUSE IT’S ON A SATURDAY MORNING SO ITS KIND OF LIKE FORCES ME TO GET UP EARLY.
CHI’S BEEN TUTORING FOR TWO YEARS, AND SHE STILL GETS UP EARLY EVERY SATURDAY BECAUSE…
“WE’RE KIND OF LIKE PRIVILEGED TO BE IN SYRACUSE BUT LIKE NOT EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY IS AS PRIVILEGED AS ME. SO, IT’S GREAT IF I’M LIKE ABLE TO HELP OTHERS THEN IT’S GOOD FOR ME TO HELP OTHERS.”
SOMEONE WHO SAMMI HELPS IS DEBORA YANGWA. DEBORA SAYS THESE TUTORING SESSIONS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR HER SCHOOL WORKLOAD.
“JUST HELPED ME WITH MY ENGLISH PROJECT AND I GOT MY SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK DONE SO I DON’T HAVE TO DO THAT WHEN I GET HOME. I CAN JUST DO OTHER WORK THAT ARE EASIER AND I’M GLAD I GOT THIS OUT OF THE WAY.”
ALONG WITH TUTORING, THESE SESSIONS PROVIDE FOOD AND EVEN SOME FIELD TRIPS. PASTOR GAIL RIMA OVERSEES THIS PROGRAM AND SHE SAYS STUDENTS ARE LEAVING WITH MORE THAN JUST COMPLETED HOMEWORK.
“THEY LIKE THAT CONNECTION. IT’S A MENTORING CONNECTION AS WELL AS A TUTORING CONNECTION.”
THESE DROP-IN SESSIONS ARE EVERY SATURDAY FROM 10 A-M TO 12:30 P-M AT THE STEPHENS LUTHERAN CHURCH.
STEP TEAM THAT SAYS THEY OFFER A LOT NORE THAN JUST GREAT
BEATS AND RHYTHM. OUR DARRELL CUNNINGHAM HAS THE STORY
I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT DOWN WITH TWO PHENOMENAL MEMEBERS OF BLACK REIGN STEP TEAM, IN WHICH THEY DESCRIBED THEIR EXPERIENCES AND LOVE FOR THE ORGANIZATION.
FOUNDED IN 2005, BLACK REIGN IS THE ONLY NON-GREEK AFFILIATED STEP TEAM ON THIS CAMPUS. THE GROUP PRIDES ITSELF ON THEIR ABILITY TO SHOWCASE THE ART OF STEPPING THROUGH FELLOWSHIP, DISCIPLINE, UNITY AND PRECISION.
“I’LL SAY THERE IS A LEVEL OF RESPECT AS WELL, IT’S NOT EASY GETTING HARD ON THEM SOMETIMES AND TRY TO PUT MY FOOT DOWN AND SAY HEY ALL WE HAVE TO GET TO WORK”
BLACK REIGN IS PREPARING FOR THE THEIR SPRING STEPSHOW AND THEY
EXCLUSIVELY TOLD ME THAT THIS YEARS SHOW IS INSPIRED BY THE MOVIE “US”.
SO, STAY LOCKED IN TO NCCNEWS.COM FOR THE SHOW’S DATE AND TIME. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL IM DARRELL CUNNINGHAM.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS WEEK. WE CONTINUE ON AT 10:30 FOR THE NEXT SHOW. HAVE A GREAT DAY, SYRACUSE.
WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
