SAYING GOODBYE TO A FAMILIAR FACE. AFTER BEING A SYMBOL OF S-U FOR 40 YEARS… ONE OF ITS MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS IS GETTING A FACELIFT.
WE’LL GIVE YOU A SNEAK PEAK INTO A NEW PLACE TO GRAB A BITE TO EAT ON CAMPUS.
BUT FIRST AN UPDATE ON CORONAVIRUS AND WHAT PREPARATIONS ARE BEING MADE TO PREVENT AN OUTBREAK.
ALL THAT AND MORE COMING UP NEXT ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
GOOD MORNING I’M ROBERT BRUIN. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AND I’M COLE JOHNSON.
HYSTERIA AND FEAR OF THE CORONA VIRUS HAS TAKEN THE NATION BY STORM.
AND DUE TO THE OUTBREAK, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY TOOK PROACTIVE ACTION IN BRINGING ITS STUDENTS HOME FROM ITALY.
OUR GABRIELLE RILES IS HERE WITH US FOR AN UPDATE ON THE CANCELED STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM.
BY NOW, MANY OF THOSE STUDENTS ARE OUT OF ITALY AND SOME ARE BACK
HOME. THEY’VE BEEN ASKED TO REFRAIN FROM RETURNING TO CAMPUS FOR 14
DAYS AT A PRECAUTION. THIS COMES AS LEADERS FROM THROUGHOUT CENTRAL NEW YORK ADDRESS THE PUBLIC TODAY AS CORONAVIRUS CONCERNS GROW.
AS FAR AS CAMPUS IS CONCERNED, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO RETURN AFTER
SPRING BREAK. AS WE MENTIONED IN THE LAST HALF HOUR, THE UNIVERSITY
PLANS TO MAKE ANY NECESSARY ACCOMMODATIONS FOR THEM. THIS COMES
AS NEW YORK STATE IS NOW REPORTING IT’S SIXTH CONFIRMED CASE OF
CORONAVIRUS. THOSE CASES ARE PRIMARILY IN DOWNSTATE NEW YORK. JUST
YESTERDAY, A COUPLE FROM BUFFALO TESTED NEGATIVE FOR THE VIRUS. THIS
IS AN ISSUE FACING NEARLY ALL WALKS OF LIFE, FROM TRAVEL TO THE STOCK MARKET TO SHOPPING.
THE BEST ADVICE FROM HEALTH OFFICIALS IS TO WASH YOUR HANDS AND KEEP
PLENTY OF SANITIZER HANDY TO CLEAN OFF COMMONLY USED SURFACES LIKE
COMPUTER KEYBOARDS. HERE AT THE NEWHOUSE SCHOOL, YOU’LL SEE PLENTY
OF THIS: SANITIZING WIPES TO CLEAN OFF WORK STATIONS AND TO KEEP THE
CORONAVIRUS AT BAY. FOR STUDENTS, ALSO KEEP AN EYE ON EMAIL AS THERE
ARE REGULAR UPDATES COMING FROM THE UNIVERSITY ABOUT THE LOCAL RESPONSE AND POSSIBLE NEXT STEPS.
THANK YOU GABBY. IT’S PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT THIS ISSUE WILL NOT BE GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON. BUT SOMETHING THAT HAS GONE AWAY IS…THE SNOW.
IT DOES SEEM THAT WAY, ROB. WARM TEMPERATURES IN CENTRAL NEW YORK
THIS WEEK HAVE PEOPLE REALLY ENJOYING THE SUN. OUR WEATHER
REPORTER, MARIA TRIVELPIECE IS HERE TO TELL US WHAT TO LOOK FOR TODAY.
MARIA, IT’S BEEN IN THE 40’S AND 50’S. CAN WE CALL THIS A HEAT WAVE?
THANKS MARIA. A FRESHMAN BY WAY BROOKLYN, NEW YORK OWNS HIS OWN
CLOTHING LINE CALLED ” VOICE “….. HE TELLS US WHY HAVING A VOICE IS SO
IMPORTANT, AND WHY WOMEN ARE THE FOUNDATION OF EVERYTHING WE HAVE.
” MY BRAND IS TITLED VOICE AND I INCLUDE A QUOTE ON EACH HOODIE THATS
SAYS USE YOUR PLATFORM TO AMPLIFY THE VOICE OF THE UNHEAR. AND TO ME I COME FROM A COMMUNITY WHERE WE ALL HAVE A VOICE BUT WE’RE NOT GIVEN A PLATFORM.
“..I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT MYSELF AND HOW IM OFTEN BEEN GIVEN THE
PRIVILEDGE TO SPEAK AMONGST A LARGER AUDIENCE, AND BEING A
REPRESENTATION OF MORE THEN MYSELF, AND THOSE THAT LOOK LIKE ME.
” ..SEEING DIFFERENT PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES AND BACKGROUNDS, AND CULTURES WEARING A LABEL THAT UNIFIES US. ORGINALLY
WHEN I CAME UP WITH VOICE, I WANTED IT TO BE A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE THAT
YOU KNOW ARE WILLING TO USE A PLATFORM TO ASSIST THOSE THAT CAN NECCESARILY INDENTIFY WHERE THEIR STRUGGLES.
” WHEN I THINK OF VOICE, ITS LIKE SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE ISN’T GIVEN,
WELL EVERYONE HAS A VOICE, BUT EVERYONE ISN’T WAYS HEARD, WHEN I THINK
OF VOICE ITS MORE LIKE SOMETHING WE ALL HAVE BUT NOT EVERYONE HARNESS THE POWER THATS ATTACHED TO YOUR VOICE.
” ITS VOICE ON THE FRONT AND ON THE BACK, THATS MEN WENT WRONG THEY
TRIED TO RUN WHAT WOMEN CREATED. EARTH….AND I HAVE A WOMAN GIVEN BIRTH TO THE EARTH.)
WE ALL IDENTIFY WITH PEOPLE THAT ARE WILLING TO SPEAK AMONGST
ANYONE, ADN WHEN YOU HAVE THAT PLATFORM, YOU HAVE THAT RESPONSIBILITY TO SPEAK FOR THOSE THAT WILL BE SILENT IN CERTAIN SETTINGS.

IT WAS PLEASURE SITTING DOWN JORDAN, AND HIS NEW SHIRTS THAT HE CREATED FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY REALLY STAND OUT! I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING HOW HIS VOICE IS GOING TO IMPACT THE CAMPUS.

THIS PAST WEEKEND, SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY RETIRED JOHN WALLACE ‘S NUMBER 44 JERSEY.

JOHN WALLACE PLAYED BASKETBALL AT SYRACYSE UNIVERSITY FROM
1993-96.
THE ROCHESTER NATIVE LED HIS TEAM TO A 1996 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, WHICH WAS DURING HIS SENIOR YEAR.
HE LATER WENT ON TO BE SELECTED WITH THE 18TH PICK IN THE 1996 NBA DRAFT BY THE NEW YORK NICKS.
WALLACE WAS SURROUNDED BY HIS MOM, CHILDREN AND SIBLINGS ON HIS SPECIAL NIGHT.
“it’s beyond an honor to have my number retired, especially at such a historic university like Syracuse University with all of the great players here. There is a lot of great players that didn’t get their number retired so to be the 15th person in coach Boeheim’s 44th season.. to get my number retired is special.”

THE SYRACUSE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM FINISHIED THE REGULAR SEASON WITH A 15 AND 14 RECORD AND WENT 9 AND 9 IN THE ACC.

A SPECIAL VISITOR ATTENDED CAMPUS LAST WEEK.
A NEWHOUSE GRADUATE AND NOW THE VICE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE
PRODUCER OF NFL FILMS, PAT KELLEHER SAT DOWN ALONGSIDE JORDAN KLIGERMAN FROM SYRACUSE ATHLETICS TO PROVIDE INDUSTRY EXPERTISE TO FELLOW STUDENTS.
WHEN YOU WERE IN THIS MOMENT IN 1990 CLOSE TO GRADUATION, WHAT WERE
YOU FEELING AND WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? WHAT WAS YOUR KIND OF
APPROACH TO THE FUTURE?
I WAS VERY, VERY LUCKY. AT THIS POINT, IN MY SENIOR YEAR, I ALREADY HAD A
JOB.
THAT JOB KELLHER WAS REFERRING TO WAS AN INTERNSHIP WITH THE NBA,
ONE HE SAYS WOULDN’T OF GOTTEN TO WHERE HE IS TODAY WITHOUT IT.
KELLHER HAS WON 19 EMMY AWARDS AND SAYS HE’S STILL SURROUNDED BY THE PEOPLE HE STARTED OUT IN THE INDUSTRY WITH LIKE FELLOW NEWHOUSE GRADUATE MIKE TIRICO.
Page 2
AND THE NEWHOUSE SPORTS MEDIA CENTER DIDN’T STOP THERE. THEY WERE ABLE TO LOCK DOWN TWO EVENTS THIS PAST WEEK, GIVING STUDENTS A MUCH NEEDED BOOST HALFWAY THROUGH THE SEMESTER.
COLE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK TO ANOTHER S-U ALUM THIS WEEKEND?
THAT’S RIGHT JULIANNA. WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE THE RETURN OF A SUCCESSUL NEWHOUSE ALUM THAN WITH A SIT DOWN TALK…AND SOME BRUNCH ON TOP OF IT? CAPPING OFF A GREAT WEEK IN NEWHOUSE SPORTS. ((TAKE PACKAGE))
“WELCOME TO THE DOME, I’M JAY ALTER…HOLD ON A MINUTE, THAT DOESN’T
LOOK LIKE JAY ALTER…THAT’S RIGHT, HE’S JAY ALTER.”
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE NEWHOUSE. IT’S THE PLACE WHERE THE DREAMS IN
THE MEDIA BUSINESS COME TO LIFE FOR HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS EACH YEAR.
ON FRIDAY, STUDENTS WERE BLESSED WITH THE RETURN OF ONE NEWHOSUE ALUM WHO WAS ABLE TO TURN THOSE DREAMS INTO A REALITY. A PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER FOR ESPN.
“I COULD GIVE YOU A BIG CALL IF YOU NEED IT, BUT I’D MUCH RATHER TELL A STORY”
HE’S AN EXCELLENT STORY TELLER, BUT FOR JAY ALTER, IT WASN’T ALWAYS THE EASIEST PATH.
“I HAD A LOT OF DOUBT AT THE END OF MY FRESHMAN YEAR GOING INTO
SOPHOMORE YEAR…I JUST WANTED TO BE HOME. MY MIND WASN’T IN IT.”
BUT SEVEN YEARS LATER, ALTER NOT ONLY CAME BACK TO CALL A MEN’S LACROSSE GAME. BUT HE TOOK THE TIME TO SPEAK TO STUDENTS ABOUT HIS JOURNEY AND HIS LIFE AS A BROADCASTER.
“I CHANNELED ALL OF THAT FIGHT AND PUT IT HERE, AND THAT REALLT TURNED A
CORNER FOR ME…I WOULDN’T BE AT ESPN OR SPEAKING AT NEWHOUSE TODAY. I
WOULDN’T BE IN BROADCASTING AT ALL.”
SO ALTER’S SHEAR PASSION HIM LANDED HIM JOBS, SOMETHING HE SAYS CAN’T
BE MANUFACTURED OR FAKED. WHICH LED TO ONE OTHER HUGE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR STUDENTS.
“RELATIONSHIPS ARE YOUR RESUME IN THIS BUSINESS…I WOULDN’T BE WHERE I
AM TODAY WITHOUT THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND IT’S ALL BECAUSE OF THIS
SCHOOL AND THIS PROGRAM.”
ALTER BROUGHT A GREAT PERSONALITY TO THE MIRON ROOM ON FRIDAY, ALONG
WITH OLIVIA STOMSKI. HE WAS ABLE TO SHED SOME OF THAT PASSION WITH THE
ROOM THAT HE TALKED SO MUCH ABOUT. ONE THING HE SAID THAT STOOD OUT
WAS “THIS IS A GAME OF INCHES…FOR FOR EVERY INCH YOU GIVE YOURSELF,
PASSION GIVES YOU A FOOT.”
IT’S BEEN A WORK IN PROGRESS BUT DOME CONSTRUCTION IS FINALLY TAKING OFF
OUR ALYSSA LYONS HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CHANGES
COMING TO THE UNIQUE BUBBLE AT THE EPICENTER OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S CAMPUS.
THE GAMES HAVE BEEN PLAYED AND THE METAL BEAMS HAVE BEEN DELIVERED.
THE DOME HAS FINALLY SHUT DOWN TO REMOVE THE BUBBLE ON THE DOME, AND IF YOU FEEL LOST IN ALL THE CONSTRUCTION, HERE’S THE 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW.
DOME CONSTRUCTION IS TAKING OFF NOW THAT LACROSSE AND BASKETBALL HAVE WRAPPED THEIR SEASONS IN THE DOME.
THE ONE HUNDRED EIGHTEEN MILLION RENOVATION WILL INCLUDE A NEW ROOF WILL HAVE A 40 YEAR LIFE SPAN, THAT’S DOUBLE THAN THE ONE THAT IS CURRENTLY UP.
THE TOP OF THE DOME WILL NO LONGER HAVE AN INFLATABLE BUBBLE, AND GET
RID OF THE AIR-LOCK SYSTEM. CREATING MORE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE UNIVERSITY TO HOST CONCERTS.
THE NEW SKYLINE WILL FEATURE STEEL BEAMS ARCHING ABOVE THE DOME
THAT’S IT FOR THE OUTSIDE-
ON THE INSIDE-A FOUR-SIDED HANGING SCOREBOARD WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE DOME, AND WITH THE NEWLY INSTALLED WIFI, STUDENTS AND FANS WILL BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH THE PORTABLE BIG SCREEN.
RENOVATIONS TO CONCESSIONS AND BATHROOMS, WHICH FANS SAY ARE LONG
OVERDUE, AND THE ADDITION OF AIR CONDITIONING WILL BE ONGOING FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. THE INSIDE FACE-LIFT ALSO INCLUDES AN LED LIGHTING SYSTEM.
THE DOME’S TOP OF THE ROOF CONSTRUCTION IS SET TO BE COMPLETED BY
FOOTBALL SEASON, THE OTHER AMENITIES LIKE AIR CONDITIONING, ENHANCED
BATHROOMS AND NEW CONSESSIONS WILL CONTINUE TO BE UPDATED UNTIL 20-22. FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M ALYSSA LYONS.
THIS WEEKEND SYRACUSE ATHLETICS HONORED THE SENIOR ATHELTES ON THE MENS AND WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM AND ICE HOCKEY.
REPORTER MICHELLE KNEZOVIC TELLS US THAT THEY WERENT THE ONLY SENIORS RECONGINZED.
THIS WEEKEND WAS FILLED WITH SENIOR CERAMONIES NOT ONLY RECONGIZING THE ATHLETES BUT EVERYONE INVOLVED.
I GOT A CHANCE TO TALK TO SOME CHEERLEADERS AND DANCERS AS THEY REFLECTED ON THEIR FOUR YEARS HERE AT SYRACUSE.

WHICH HAS BEEN A PIECE OF THE SYRACUSE SKYLINE SINCE THE DOME WAS
BUILT IN 19-80 SET TO BE REMOVED IN THE COMING WEEKS. A SERIES OF OTHER
RENOVATIONS ARE SET TO TAKE PLACE OVER THE SUMMER, BUT MANY FANS WERE UPSET THIS WEEKEND WOULD BE THE LAST IN THE DOME.
{ANC RIGHT–COLE}
