COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL… WE HAVE A FULL RECAP OF THE 20-19 ELECTIONS IN ONONDAGA COUNTY AND WHAT THEY MEAN FOR OUR CAMPUS…
WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE WAYS THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY IS GIVING BACK THIS NOVEMBER…
PLUS, WE MIGHT FINALLY GET SOME SNOW! WE’LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOU NEED TO DIG OUT YOUR COATS, GLOVES, AND SHOVELS…
ALL THAT PLUS YOUR WEATHER AND ORANGE SPORTS COMING UP ON THIS EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL…
GOOD MORNING. i’m ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AND I’M ALEXA ROTH. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR FIRST HALF HOUR.
THE NEW YORK STATE GENERAL ELECTIONS WERE LAST NIGHT AND ONONDAGA COUNTY HAS SOME EXCITING RESULTS.
FROM INTERNET GLITCHES TO SURPRISING WINS, OUR MORGAN TRAU IS LIVE IN STUDIO WITH MORE.
THANKS, GUYS!
ONONDAGA COUNTY’S GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS WERE OVERSHADOWED BY
THE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES THE COUNTY’S BOARD OF ELECTIONS WAS FACING
LAST NIGHT. THE RESULTS HAD NOT BEEN POSTED UNTIL AROUND 10:30, AN
HOUR AND A HALF AFTER THE POLLS CLOSED. LOCAL JOURNALISTS WERE PANICKED ON TWITTER, AS IT SEEMED ONLY ONONDAGA WAS BEING AFFECTED BY THE GLITCHES.
THE WEBSITE WAS NOT THE ONLY DRAMA WE SAW THIS YEAR IN ONONDAGA
COUNTY. THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE RACE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST TALKED
ABOUT AND ALSO THE MOST EXPENSIVE. THE TWO CANDIDATES HAVE SPENT
MORE THAN 2 MILLION DOLLARS CAMPAIGNING THIS YEAR. REPUBLICAN
INCUMBENT RYAN MCMAHON WAS CHALLENGED BY DEMOCRAT BUSINESSMAN TONY MALAVENDA THIS YEAR. MCMAHON WON WITH 55% OF THE VOTE.
REPUBLICAN WILLIAM FITZPATRICK HAS BEEN THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY FOR
EIGHT TERMS, BUT DEMOCRAT CHUCK KELLER AND CONSERVATIVE GARY LAVINE BOTH CHALLENGED HIS SEAT. FITZPATRICK WON WITH 54% OF THE VOTE, WHILE KELLER FOLLOWED AT ABOUT 39%.
CURRENT CITY AUDITOR DEMOCRAT MARTY MASTER POLE CHALLENGED
REPUBLICAN MATT BEADNULL FOR HIS SEAT AS COUNTY COMPTROLLER.
BEADNELL WAS APPOINTED TO HIS ROLE BY MCMAHON ALMOST A YEAR AGO
AFTER ROBERT ANTONACCI RESIGNED AFTER WINNING A SEAT IN THE NEW YORK
STATE SENATE. THIS WAS ONE OF THE CLOSER RACES. MASTER POLE WON 51%-48%. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME A DEMOCRAT HAS HELD THE POSITION IN OVER 30 YEARS.
-RDR DURATION: 2:23
ALL 17 SEATS WERE UP FOR COUNTY LEGISLATURES THIS ELECTION.
PREVIOUSLY, 12 COUNTY LAWMAKERS WERE REPUBLICANS AND FIVE WERE
DEMOCRATS. DEMOCRATS HOPED TO FLIP THE BOARD LAST NIGHT, BUT ONLY
ENDED UP GETTING ONE MORE SEAT. THE LEGISLATURE IS NOW 11
REPUBLICAN, 6 DEMOCRAT. IT TAKES 12 VOTES TO OVERRIDE A VETO, SO NOW REPUBLICANS NO LONGER HAVE THE SUPER-MAJORITY.
THREE NEW YORK SUPREME COURT JUDICIAL SEATS WERE OPEN FOR THE
DISTRICT THAT COVERS SIX COUNTIES, INCLUDING ONONDAGA. INCUMBENT
JUDGE BERNADETTE ROMANO CLARK KEPT HER SEAT, WHILE REPUBLICAN
SENATOR ANTONACCI JOINED HER ON THE BENCH. THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE
AN OPEN SENATE SEAT FOR THE 50TH DISTRICT. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DISCREPANCIES ONLINE OF WHO WON THE THIRD SPOT, BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS IS SAYING DEMOCRAT JULIE SERIO GOT THE SPOT.
OVER 100 THOUSAND PEOPLE VOTED YESTERDAY FOR ONONDAGA COUNTY,
WITH A HUGE TURNOUT FROM SUBURBAN RESIDENCE. OFFICIALS ARE SAYING
THERE ARE 30 THOUSAND MORE VOTERS THIS YEAR THAN THE PREVIOUS GENERAL ELECTION.
THE ELECTION COVERAGE WAS NOT JUST THE NEWS STATION AROUND THE
AREA, BUT ALSO WITH THE NEWHOUSE SCHOOL’S DEMOCRACY IN ACTION TEAM.
D-I-A IS AN ELECTION DAY PROJECT THAT STUDENT JOURNALISTS PARTICIPATE
IN, COVERING LOCAL CENTRAL NEW YORK CANDIDATES, WATCH PARTIES, AND POLLING STATIONS.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M MORGAN TRAU.
IT WAS RAINING ALL DAY YESTERDAY BUT DID THAT AFFECT VOTER TURNOUT?
OUR SHOSHANA STAHL IS LIVE IN STUDIO WITH MORE.
THANKS, GUYS. I WENT TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER YESTERDAY AND FOUND THAT WEATHER MIGHT NOT HAVE PLAYED AS MUCH OF A ROLE AS WE THOUGHT.
COLD. RAIN AND GRAY SKIES. THE MAKING OF ANY NORMAL DAY IN CENTRAL NEW YORK.
“STORMS AND RAIN AND SNOW. C’MON THIS IS LIFE.”
BUT IT WASN’T ANY NORMAL DAY. YESTERDAY WAS ELECTION DAY AND NOTHING COULD STOP CECILE COHEN FROM COMING OUT AND VOTING.
A TRADITION SHE HAS DONE FOR MOST OF HER LIFE.
“MY PARENTS TOOK ME AT 18 DOWN TO THE TOWN HALL IN CHERRY VALLEY NEW YORK TO GET ME REGISTERED TO VOTE. BACK IN THE ’50’S WHEN I GREW UP, VOTING ELECTION DAY NOBODY WENT TO WORK. SCHOOL WAS OUT. I MEAN EVERYBODY WAS GIVEN THE CHANCE TO GO VOTE. IT’S NOT THAT WAY TODAY.”
THIS YEARS ELECTION FOCUSED ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT WITH THE COUNTY
EXECUTIVE, DISTRICT ATTORNEY, AND COUNTY COMPTROLLER RACES. BUT TO VOTERS LIKE CHARLES FAHEY, IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL. EVERY VOTE COUNTS.
“IF YOU LIVE HERE, YOU HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMON GOOD AND SO WITH WHATEVER INSIGHTS WE HAVE AS INDIVIDUALS, WE HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE THOSE INSIGHTS BY VOTING.”
COHEN SAYS THERE’S A DEEPER MEANING BEHIND THE VOTES.
“WE DON’T WANT THAT FREEDOM TAKEN AWAY LIKE THAT FEELS THAT’S HAPPENING TODAY.”
WEATHER WON’T STOP THESE VOTERS FROM EXPRESSING THIS FREEDOM
“RAIN OR SHINE. SNOW EVEN.”
COHEN TOLD ME SHE THINKS EARLY VOTING THIS YEAR ALLOWED PEOPLE TO VOTE WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ON ELECTION DAY.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M SHOSHANA STAHL

THE BROTHERS OF THE PSI UPSILON FRATERNITY HERE ON CAMPUS ARE SPREADING AWARENESS THIS NO SHAVE NOVEMBER.
EVERY FALL THE CURRENT BROTHERS AND ALUMNI, GROW OUT THEIR BEARDS,
JOIN THE MOVEMBER FOUNDATION, AND RAISE MONEY IN HONOR OF ONE OF THEIR BROTHERS THAT BATTLED AND BEAT TESTICULAR CANCER.
PRESIDENT OF PSI U, SENIOR ROCCO MACRI (MACK-RYE), SAYS THE FUNDRAISING HAS ALREADY BEGUN.
“EVERY YEAR WE RAISE CLOSE TO — AS A HOUSE WE RAISE CLOSE TO 6THOUSAND TO 8-THOUSAND DOLLARS, IN THAT RANGE — BUT AS A PAGE WE
RAISE CLOSE TO 20-THOUSAND DOLLARS, WHICH IS IN THE TOP FIVE IN THE
COUNTRY.”
LAST YEAR THE CHAPTER RAISED CLOSE TO 6-THOUSAND DOLLARS. THEIR GOAL THIS YEAR IS TO BREAK A PRIOR RECORD OF 8-THOUSAND.
IT’S TIME NOW FOR THIS WEEK’S EAT AND TELL, AND THIS WEEK, WE ARE FOCUSING ON ONE OF THE TOP FAVORITE ITEMS OF MANY OF OUR FELLOW STUDENTS.
WHAT’S COOKING, IS PIZZA, BUT NOT JUST ANY KIND OF PIZZA. THIS MORNING
WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ARTISAN PIZZAS YOU CAN FIND AT THE GOLDSTEIN STUDENT CENTER ON SOUTH CAMPUS.
FOR MANY PEOPLE, IT’S THE PERFECT MEAL…TASTY CHEESE, CRISPY CRUST,
FRESH INGREDIENTS. IT’S ALL BEING MADE DAILY AT THE TOMATO WHEEL. YOU
CAN FIND THEM AT THE CAMPUS FOOD COURTS, INCLUDING THE ONE LOCATED AT THE GOLDSTEIN STUDENT CENTER.
AND OF COURSE, THE PROOF, IS IN THE TASTING.
YOU CAN FIND THE TOMATO WHEEL AT THE FOOD COURT ON SOUTH CAMPUS

THE MARTY GLICKMAN AWARDS ARE TONIGHT ON CAMPUS. OUR MICHELLE
KNEZOVIC IS IN STUDIO TO TELL US ABOUT WHAT THEY MEAN TO THE BROADCASTING COMMUNITY…
ALSO COMING UP… OUR ALEX PEEBLES HAS YOUR SPORTS UPDATE FROM A BUSY WEEK ON THE HILL…
STAY WITH US FOR THOSE STORIES AND MUCH MORE HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
ONE SU STUDENT HAS BEEN DESIGNING CLOTHES FOR OVER TEN YEARS.
OUR REPORTER DANA CASULLO HAS THE STORY.
…
ANNA MOLINARI IS A FASHION DESIGN STUDENT AND SHE’S NO ROOKIE TO THE BUSINESS.
SHE BECAME INSPIRED WHEN SHE STARTED WATCHING A PROJECT RUNWAY MARATHON WITH HER SISTER.
ANNA MOLINARI HAS BEEN DESIGNING CLOTHES SINCE SHE WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD.
THE FIRST THING SHE MADE WAS A WHILE FLEECE DRESS AND SHE USED HER YOUNGER SISTER AS THE MODEL.
ALTHOUGH AS OF RECENTLY, HER OLDER BROTHER HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION FOR HER WORK…
“HE USED TO HAVE AUTISM, BUT THROUGH INTENSIVE THERAPY HE OVERCAME THE DIAGNOSIS.”
MOLINARI’S SENIOR COLLECTION IS INSPIRED BY HER BROTHER, WHO’S A COMPUTER PROGRAMMER.
HE SENT MOLINARI SOME OF HIS CODING AND SHE PUT IT ON FABRIC.
“THE FACT THAT I GET TO HIGHLIGHT MY BROTHERS TALENT AND COMBINE THE WAY OUR BRAINS WORK, I THINK IS REALLY MEANINGFUL, AND TO BE ABLE TO CONNECT WITH HIM THROUGH THIS IS AWESOME.”
IN MOLINARI’S PERSONAL DESIGNS, SHE USES A LOT OF UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS, LIKE STRAWS AND TOOTHPICKS, AND SAFETY PINS.
MOLINARI’S ALSO INCORPORATES THESE UNCONVENTIONAL DESIGNS IN THE SYRACUSE APPAREL SHE MAKES FOR THE STORE SCHOLARS AND CHAMPS.
SCHOLARS AND CHAMPS IF FULL OF VINTAGE, SLIGHTLY USED CLOTHES.
BUT THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT THESE ITEMS OF CLOTHING.
“THE PIECES THAT I MAKE ARE ONE OF ONE… I DON’T MAKE ANY TWO THE SAME… SO I THINK FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME THAT WANT TO STAND OUT AND NOT BE WEARING THE SAME GENERIC SYRACUSE SHIRT AS THE NEXT PERSON CAN TURN TOWARDS MY BRAND.”
PAGE 2
AND WHY SHOULD STUDENTS WEAR HER CLOTHING?
“STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR MY CLOTHING BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT… CONVERSATION PIECE AND THERE’S NOT ANOTHER PIECE LIKE IT.”
PAGE 3
THERE WILL BE A POP-UP SALE OF MOLINARI’S CLOTHING AT BIRD LIBRARY ON NOVEMBER 15TH.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M DANA CASULLO.
IT WAS ANOTHER BUSY WEEK FOR S-U ATHLETICS…

AFTER LOSING THE CHANCE TO HOST AN ACC TOURNAMENT GAME, THE ORANGE TRAVELED OVER 600 MILES TO CHAPEL HILL TO TAKE ON THE NUMBER 7 SEED, UNC.
90 MINUTES AND TWO OVERTIME PERIODS WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO DECIDE THE CONTEST, SO THE DECISION WENT TO A PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUT. AFTER A PERFECT 5-FOR-5, SYRACUSE GOT THE DOUBLE U.
THE ORANGE TRAVEL TO VIRGINIA ON SATURDAY FOR A SECOND ROUND MATCHUP AGAINST THE NUMBER 2 SEED UVA.
BASKETBALL SEASON IS UPON US, SYRACUSE WOMENS BASKETBALL OPENED UP THE SEASON LAST NIGHT WITH A VICTORY AGAINST OHIO UNIVERSITY.

ANOTHER CUSE NEWCOMER, FRESHMAN TALEAH WASHINGTON CONTRIBUTED 10 POINTS INCLUDING A HALFTIME BUZZER BEATER.
THE SECOND HALF WAS ALL SYRACUSE, AS THE ORANGE OUT-REBOUNDED THE BOBCATS 54 TO 35.

SYRACUSE MEN’S BASKETBALL OPEN UP THE REGULAR SEASON IN THE DOME TONIGHT AS THEY HOST THE REIGNING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS.
