Mornings On The Hill Wednesday, October 9, 2019 Mornings On The Hill Wednesday, October 9, 2019

COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL–IT’S BEING CALLED A NATIONWIDE CRISIS-THE MENTAL HEALTH OF STUDENTS. WE’LL FIND OUT WHAT’S BEING DONE ON CAMPUS TO HELP THOSE IN NEED.
CAMPUS SAFETY WEEK ARRIVES–WE’LL GAGUE STUDENT REACTION REGARDING THE EFFORTS TO KEEP THEM SAFE AND PROTECT THEIR PROPERTY.
AND OUR FOCUS IS ON FOOD THIS MORNING, WITH OUR EAT AND TELL SEGMENT TAKING A LOOK AT MASHED POTATOES, AND MAC AND CHEESE.
All that plus your weather and Orange Sports coming up on this edition of Mornings on the
Hill.
GOOD MORNING. I’M ALEX PEEBLES. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.

AND I’M ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN… IT’S WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9TH, AND HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY…

RECORD NUMBERS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE SEEKING MENTAL HEALTH
TREATMENTS, AND THE MEDIA’S CALLING IT A CRISIS. IT’S NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK, SO I DECIDED TO FIND OUT WHAT RESOURCES OUR
WHEN I HEAR MENTAL HEALTH, I THINK OF HOW A PERSON FEELS IN THEIR OWN HEAD. HOW THEY FEEL FUNCTIONING ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS.
PEER EDUCATOR AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, ALEXANDRA ALFIERI WORKS IN
HEALTH PROMOTION AT THE BARNES CENTER AT THE ARCH AND SAYS THERE
CAN BE STIGMAS SURROUND MENTAL HEALTH IN COLLEGE? BECUASE OF THIS,
SHE’S FOUND HERSELF USING THE KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING SHE’S BEEN
GIVEN THE LAST YEAR, TO MAKE STUDENTS MORE AWARE OF CAMPUS RESOURCES.
“WE FOCUS ON OUR OWN WELLBEING AND BEING MINDFUL OF THAT AND
CHOOSING TO DO ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE YOUR OWN HAPPY WELLBEING.”
SOME OF THESE ACTIVITIES INCLUDE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING, GROUP THERAPY, AROMATHERAPY, MIND SPAS, EXERCISE CLASSES AND WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE MOST POPULAR… PET THERAPY.
WHILE THESE ACTIVITIES ARE ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS DAILY, SYRACUSE’S
STUDENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT, MACKENZIE MERTIKAS SAYS, S-A HAS WORKED HARD THIS WEEK TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH PANELS, EVENTS AND DISCUSSIONS TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS.
“SO FAR WE HAD A KICKOFF IN THE LIFE SCIENCES ATRIUM ON MONDAY. WE
HAVE PEOPLE TIE RIBBONS ON A FENCE IF THEY’VE BEEN AFFECTED ME MENTAL
HEALTH OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN. WE’VE GIVEN AWAY TSHIRTS,
WE’VE PLAYED CORNHOLE, AND LOTS OF COOL STUFF SO IT’S BEEN REALLY
GREAT SO FAR.”
STUDENT ASSOCATION IS PLANNING ON TEAMING UP WITH THE BARNES CENTER
BEYOND THIS WEEK TO CONTINUE HOSTING EVENTS THAT SPREAD AWARENESS.
BECAUSE LONG AFTER THIS WEEK IS OVER, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT
THOSE WHO STRUGGLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES ARE FIRST AND FOREMOST… PEOPLE.
Page 2
“WE NEVER SAY A DEPRESSED PERSON, IT’S A PERSON WITH DEPRESSION.
BECAUSE EVERYONE IS STILL A PERSON BEFORE ANY OTHER ILLNESS, WHETHER IT BE MENTAL OR PHYSICAL.”
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS EVENTS ARE CONTINUING THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. THERE’S MEDITATION IN THE BARNES CENTER TODAY AT NOON AND 7 P-M.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY RELEASED THEIR
ANNUAL SECURITY REPORT LAST WEEK, SHOWING STATISTICS ON CAMPUS
CRIMES AND ALSO DETAIL THE SCHOOL’S SECURITY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
OUR REPORTER MORGAN TRAU IS LIVE IN STUDIO TO TELL US HOW THE CAMPUS
COMMUNITY IS FEELING ABOUT THE REPORT AND HOW STUDENTS FEEL ABOUT
THEIR CAMPUS SAFETY
THANKS, GUYS. DESPITE THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY’S REPORT THAT
ALMOST ALL CRIME RATES DECREASED OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, SOME
STUDENTS AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY ARE SAYING THEY DO NOT TRUST THEIR
OFFICERS. THE ROCKY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STUDENTS AND DPS
PEAKED DURING AN OFF-CAMPUS ASSAULT ON ACKERMAN AVENUE EARLIER IN
20-19. THREE STUDENTS OF COLOR WERE ASSAULTED IN WHAT THEY SAY WAS A HATE CRIME, HOWEVER DPS DID NOT TREAT IT AS SUCH. I TALKED TO STUDENTS
“I think my identity to them is based on my skin color”
JUNIOR SADIA AHMED SAYS SHE IS ALWAYS CAUTIOUS WHEN SHE IS WITH A
GROUP OF FRIENDS AND SEES SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS.
“It’s like a general fact on this campus that if you are a student of color you have to be more aware of your surroundings and hope you don’t run into DPS because I’m sorry but the consequences are going to be worse for you than any other student on campus.”
AND SHE’S NOT THE ONLY STUDENT WHO FEELS THAT WAY. SOME STUDENTS SAY
THEY HAVE A NEGATIVE VIEW OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS BECAUSE OF
THE PERCEIVED RACIAL BIAS AND LACK OF CONCERN FOR HOME ROBBERIES.

AFTER THE RELEASE OF THEIR ANNUAL SECURITY REPORT, SOME STUDENTS BELIEVE DPS SHOULD BE DOING MORE, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE LIVING OFFCAMPUS.
“Especially with the Ackerman incident last year, students aren’t sure if DPS is on their side.”
SADIA IS DETERMINED TO MAKE CHANGES. SHE JUST BECAME THE RESIDENCE
HALL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT AND WANTS TO HELP MAKE EVERYONE FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE ON OR OFF CAMPUS.
“Breaking down those barriers between Syracuse and DPS but actually getting DPS to listen to the students on a one on one level – I think that’s my main goal for this year, yeah”
SHE IS WORKING TOWARDS SETTING UP EVENTS FOR STUDENTS TO GET TO
KNOW THE OFFICERS, SUCH AS COFFEE WITH A COP OR MOST RECENTLY, MARIO
KART AND PIZZA WITH DPS. BUT SOME STUDENTS WOULD RATHER SEE
COMPREHENSIVE PREJUDICE TRAINING TO HELP INCREASE THEIR OPINIONS.
Page 2
“Pizza and games with DPS…I don’t think that’s the right way to do it.”
I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT DPS, HOWEVER THEY WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO
COMMENT. BUT THIS YEAR THEY HAVE ESTABLISHED AN OFFICER RELATIONSHIP
PROGRAM TO FOCUS ON BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND ARE OFFERING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION TRAININGS FOR THEIR OFFICERS…. BACK TO YOU.

ONE HAUNTED HOUSE IS DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR, WITH THE HOPES OF INCLUDING MORE COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

OUR CHIANN NOBREGA IS LIVE IN STUDIO WITH MORE ON THIS OSWEGO ATTRACTION.

Thanks guys– FRIGHTMARE FARMS IS MAKING ACCESSIBILITY THEIR PRIORITY IN THIS YEAR’S HAUNTED HOUSE WITH THEIR USE OF SENSORY INCLUSIVE BAGS.

HAUNTED HOUSES ARE DESIGNED TO SCARE YOU.
MOST OF US CAN CONTROL THOSE EMOTIONS, BUT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES CAN GET OVERWHELMED EASILY.
FRIGHTMARE FARMS IN OSWEGO HAS CREATED TOOLS TO HELP THOSE WHO CAN NOT DEAL WITH THE BRIGHT LIGHTS AND LOUD SOUNDS.
PRODUCTION DIRECTOR NICOLE GINSBURG SAYS THESE TOOLS HELP PARENTS FEEL AT EASE.
“So we’ve learned that these accommodations are absolutely necessary in order for even families to participate in these types of activities”
THE TOOLS INCLUDE NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES, FIDGET TOYS AND EMOTIONAL CUE CARDS.
THEY COME IN A BAG AND ARE AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO NEED THEM.

-PKG Duration: 1:30
GINSBURG IS A PARENT TO A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY AND KNOWS FIRST HAND HOW IMPORTANT THESE ACCOMDATIONS ARE.
“Realistically the whole things invaluable but it did not cost us a lot to make those changes… to make those accommodations all the way around. And it was well worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
ANDREW BENBENEK IS A JUNIOR AT SYRACSUE UNIVERSITY.
HE IS STUDYING BROADCAST JOURNALISM IN THE INCLUSIVE-U PROGRAM.
BENBENEK BELIEVES ATTRACTIONS LIKE FRIGHTMARE FARMS IS IMPORTANT FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
“It would be a good thing for kind of anyone with a disability to have a haunted house… to have anything to feel free that they’re welcome, that they are not excluded because of the disability.”
FRIGHTMARE FARMS IS OPEN THROUGH THE MONTH OF OCTOBER AND OFFERS A STUDENT DISCOUNT.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M CHIANN NOBREGA.

ONE OF OUR NEW FEATURES THIS SEMESTER ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL PUTS THE FOCUS ON CAMPUS FOOD.
SPECIFICALLY, SOME OF THE NEW ITEMS YOU CAN FIND IN SOME OF OUR CAMPUS DINING CENTERS. OUR SHARIF KING IS AT KIMMEL FOOD COURT WITH THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF EAT AND TEL
“Students can email us at mealtalk@syr.edu”
COMING UP NEXT WEEK ON EAT AND TELL, WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT HOW FOOD
SERVICES IS TEAMING UP WITH GRUB HUB TO BRING YOUR FAVORITE FOODS RIGHT
TIME TO CHECK THE WEATHER FOR TODAY.
MICHELLE KNEZOVIC
IS LIVE OUT ON UNIVERSITY AVE TO TELL US WHAT TO EXPECT.

I AM OUTSIDE ON UNIVERSITY AVE AND WOULD YOU LOOK AT THESE LEAVES IT IS OFFICALLY FALL IN SYRACUSE, THE LEAVES MATCH ALL THE ORANGE ON THIS CAMPUS.
TODAY IS GOING TO BE A PERFECT FALL DAY FOR SWEATHERS, BOOTS, ADN SCARFS.
SO MAKE SURE WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE THIS MORNING IT MAY BE A LITTLE BRISK.
BUT THERE ALSO WILL BE A 90 PERCENT HUMDITY OUT THERE
WITH THE HIGH HUMIDITY AND CHILLY TEMPTURES DEFINITELY PLAYS A FACTOR INTO PEOPLE GETTING SICK.
AND JUST AS FALL SEASON ARRIVES SO DOES FLU SEASON.
AND AS THE FALL CLOSES WINTER BEGINS SO DOES FLU SEASON.
LAST YEAR ONONDAGA COUNTY HAD THE MOST FLU CASES IN CENTRAL NEW YORK
“They have a very mild case of the flu and the reason they have the mild case of the flu is because they got their flu vaccine back in October November.”
Ann Salvagni is a Registered Nurse at Upstate Medical. She recommends that you get your flu shot in the fall because December through January is when Central New York sees the most significant number of Flu cases.
“Because you receive the flu vaccine today doesn’t mean that your immune system is ready tomorrow we have to allow our immune system a time to work and that’s usually 10-14 days”
“Getting your flu shot doesn’t only effect your symptoms but also local businesses in the area.”
“it absolutely a big stressor although it’s something that has gotten be done it’s my job to make sure that the store is running properly if someone else can’t do it I have to be there and do it”
Amber Miller is the District Supervisor at Domino’s Pizza. She says that even with the slightest symptoms her employees are not allowed to come to work. The lack of employees has an immediate effect on the sales and customer service.
“So we have to run short therefore our customers don’t get the best service cause obviously we have little to no employees.”
Upstate Medical feels that they have found a possible solution for this lack of employees.
They make it mandatory for employees and students to get a flu shot and if they refuse they are required to wear a face mask around the building
The Flu vaccination will be available for free at various locations around Onondaga County such as Walgreens and Kinney Drugs Pharmacy.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M MICHELLE KNEZOVIC
Coming up here on Mornings on the Hill…
ALSO COMING UP… HOW THE INCREASE IN DEER POPULATION IS MAKING THE ROADS LESS SAFE.
STAY WITH US FOR THOSE STORIES AND MORE, HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
OCTOBER IS L.G.B.T.Q HISTORY MONTH, AND SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY HAS A JAM PACKED SCHEDULE OF SEMINARS AND EVENTS FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING AND LEARNING ABOUT THE L.G.B.T.Q COMMUNITY.
EVENTS COMING UP INCLUDE: A SAFE ZONE WORKSHOP TODAY UNTIL NOON, A QUEER POOL PARTY ON SUNDAY, AND A DISCUSSION: NAVIGATING QUEERNESS AROUND CAMPUS.
THESE EVENTS ALL SURROUNDING NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY, FRIDAY OCTOBER 11.
AND SOME GOOD NEWS FOR ALL OF YOU MISSING YOUR MORNING STARBUCKS RUN. THE STARBUCKS ON THE CORNER OF MARSHALL STREET AND UNIVERSITY AVE IS A SHORT THREE DAYS AWAY FROM RE-OPENNING.
THE COFFEE GIANT CLOSED ITS DOORS FOR RENNOVATIONS QUIETLY, LEAVING
LOYAL PATRONS WITHOUT THEIR MORNING CAFFIENE FIX. FOR THOSE OF YOU
WHO CANNOT MAKE ANOTHER THREE DAYS WITHOUT STARBUCKS, HAVE NO FEAR. THE SHOP LOCATED IN CAMPUS WEST IS STILL OPEN.

ON MONDAY THE SYRACUSE COMMON COUNCIL APPROVED A PLAN TO BRING IN
SHARP SHOOTERS TO CONTROL THE POPULATION OF DEER. JILLIAN ANDREWS IS
LIVE IN STUDIO TO EXPLAIN WHAT DANGERS TO PUBLIC SAFETY, A LARGE DEER
POPULATION BRINGS. BUT BEFORE WE SEND YOU OVER, WE WOULD LIKE TO WARN YOU, THERE MAY BE IMAGES THAT OFFEND SOME VIEWERS.
IN 2017, SYRACUSE RANKED FOURTH OUT OF FIFTY TOWNS AND CITIES IN
UPSTATE NEW YORK, WHERE YOU ARE MOST LIKELY TO HIT A DEER WITH YOUR
CAR. IN THAT YEAR ALONE 137 DEER WERE REPORTED KILLED IN CAR
COLLISIONS. AND NOW THAT FALL IS IN FULL SWING, DEER ARE MORE ACTIVE.
INCREASING THE CHANCES OF HITTING ONE WHILE YOU”RE ON THE ROAD

ONONDAGA COUNTY RESIDENT, ZACH PETRIE WAS DRIVING TO A FRIENDS HOUSE
FOR DINNER WITH HIS WIFE AND 3-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER IN THE CAR WHEN HE HIT A DEER AT 70 MILES AN HOUR.
“The thing that scary is I could have been an inch or two off of that possibly hurting her.”

PETRIE CONSIDERS HIMSELF LUCKY THAT HE AND HIS FAMILY WALKED AWAY
FROM THE ACCIDENT UNHARMED. HE KNOWS HOW A MATTER OF INCHES IS ALL IT
WOULD HAVE TAKEN FOR A DIFFERENT OUTCOME. BUT PETRIE SAYS, EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE NO PHYSICAL INJURIES, THIS ACCIDENT HAS AFFECTED HIS DRIVING.
“Even now when I’m driving up through there it’s like alright white knuckling a little bit kind

-PKG Duration: 2:41
Of looking back and forth and freaking out the whole time, not how I want to be driving”
65,000 PEOPLE HIT DEER WITH THEIR CARS EVERY YEAR
OWNER OF JEFFREY’S AUTO BODY, JEFF LYMAN SAYS DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR
THERE ARE WEEKS THAT HALF OF THE VEHICLES IN HIS SHOP ARE BEING REPAIRED FOR DEER HITS.
“This year is going to be high, we’ve already started out. It’s going to be a busy deer season for us.”
LYMAN ALSO SAYS HE CAN TELL THE DEER POPULATION IS INCREASING JUST BY THE NUMBER OF CAR REPAIRS HE IS DOING EVERY YEAR.
“Throughout the year its well over 100 probably closer to 150 or 200 deer hits every single year nonstop, and it’s getting worse not better.”
YOU’RE MOST LIKELY TO HIT A DEER DURING DUSK AND DAWN IN THE FALL. AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, EXPERTS SAY, IF A DEER COMES INTO YOUR PATH WHILE YOU’RE DRIVING, KEEP DRIVING STRAIGHT.
IT’S WORSE IF YOU SWERVE BECAUSE THE CHANCES OF HITTING A TREE OR ANOTHER CAR INCREASE, AS DOES THE CHANCES OF INJURY.
I’M JILLIAN ANDREWS, FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
