THE SPORTS MANAGEMENT CLUB HAS RAISED MORE THAN 475 THOUSAND DOLLARS OVER THE PAST FOURTEEN YEARS.
THIS YEAR THEY HOPE TO BREAK THE FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR MARK. MARTEKA’S FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE AUCTION IS GIVING THE CHARITIES THE FINAL CHECK.

“To just see the power and impact that that money can do for them I think is the most rewarding thing by far.”
THE SPORTS MANAGEMENT CLUB IS STLL COLLECTING ITEMS AT THE TIME.

OUR TOP STORY THIS HOUR… FOR ALL OF YOU POURING YOUR COFFEE THIS MORNING, WE HAVE SOME NEWS TO HELP WAKE YOU UP. PEOPLES PLACE IS A STUDENT FAVORITE THAT HAS BEEN OPEN SINCE 19-79.
OUR MICHELLE KUH-NEZ-OVIC JOINS US LIVE TO TELL US ABOUT WHAT MAKES THIS COFFEE SHOP SO UNIQUE. HOWS IT LOOKING OVER THERE MICHELLE?

IF YOU’RE A SYRACUSE STUDENT YOU’VE PROBALY WALKED ON THE QUAD AND PAST HENDRICKS CHAPEL, BUT HAVE YOU EVER WANDERED INSIDE.
IN THE BASEMENT OF THIS CHAPEL A COFFE SHOP AND THIS YEAR CELEBRATING
A coffee shop on Syracuse’s campus fully run by students in the basement of Hendricks chapel
Student Manager SARAH. BUTTS. Says that she’s learned so much more than just how to make coffee
“I’VE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT COMMUNICATION NEEDING TO TELL PEOPLE
WHEN YOURE NOT WORKING AND ALSO LEARNING HOW TO ASK FOR THINGS AND LEARNING HOW TO ASK FOR WHEN I NEEDED HELP”

THEY ARE ALL LEARNING LIFE SKILLS BUT FOR MANAGER CHLOE CROOKALL IT
DOESN’T FEEL LIKE WORK AT ALL
“THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH WERE ALL GOOD FRIENDS OR ATLEAST BECOMING
GOOD FRIENDS AND ITS REALLY FUN TO GO TO WORK AND NOT FEEL LIKE YOURE
GOING TO DO A JOB THAT YOU HATE.”
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THERE FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB THEY ALL SEEMED
TO HAVE THE SAME ANWSER IT’S “THE PEOPLE”
“MY FAVORITE PART IS THE PEOPLE WHO WORK HERE AND WHO ARE REGULAR
CUSTOMERS. THE PEOPLE WHO WORK HERE WE HAVE BECOME A LITTLE FAMILY.
THESEPEOPLE ARE MY BEST FRIENDS AND I CAN COUNT ON THEM FOR ANYTHING.”
EVERYONE WHO WORKS AT PEOPLE’S PLACE IS SOME SORT OF AN ARTIST AND THEY SHOW THAT OFF BY HANGING ARTWORK AROUND THE COFFEE SHOP.
Page 2
IT IS SOMWHERE STUDENTS CAN GO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND EVEN FEEL AS IF
“IT’S JUST NICE TO. FEELING LIKE YOU ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE”
THEY’RE OPEN WEEKLY 8-6 AND AS YOU CAN SEE THE PEOPLE LOVE IT.
REPORTING LIVE, I’M MCIHELLE KNEZOVIC FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.

IT’S NATIONAL DIAPER-AWARENESS-WEEK —
AND ONE CENTRAL NEW YORK ORGANIZATION IS HOPING TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT DIAPER NEED…
N-C-C NEWS REPORTER JENNA BREE TELLS US WHAT THIS WEEK IS ALL ABOUT.
“Their babies cry more, they’re uncomfortable, and they’re at risk for severe diaper infection.”
CENTRAL NEW YORK DIAPER BANK FOUNDER MICHELA HUGO SAYS THERE ARE MANY CONSEQUENCES OF DIAPER NEED…
“Moms feel inadequate, they feel super stressed, and they’re more likely to experience depression.”
“The impacts of having a mom who’s bonding less with the baby and experiencing depression last a lifetime for a child.”
HUGO SAYS DIAPERS COST MORE FOR POOR FAMILIES —
BECAUSE THEY CAN ONLY AFFORD SMALL PACKS WHEN THEY SHOP FOR DIAPERS — THEY CAN’T BUY THEM IN BULK.
“An adequate supply of diapers like these can cost 100 dollars per month — and that’s just for one child.”
ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS LIKE FOOD STAMPS, WIC AND SNAP DON’T COVER DIAPERS…
“It was just an overlooked consequence of poverty for so long in Central New York.”
BUT HUGO SAYS THANKS TO LOCAL PARTNERS — THE BANK IS ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE 80-THOUSAND DIAPERS EACH MONTH…
“This community has really shown that they care about our most vulnerable.”
AND THROUGH THE AWARENESS WEEK — SHE HOPES TO RECRUIT MORE

VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS.
THIS SATURDAY YOU CAN DROP OFF DIAPERS BEFORE THE S-U FOOTBALL GAME…
BRING THEM TO THE QUAD BETWEEN NINE A-M AND 12 P-M…
SIZES FIVE AND SIX ARE ESPECIALLY NEEDED…
TIME TO CHECK YOUR WEATHER FOR TODAY.
ALEXANDRA JENNERJAHN IS LIVE OUT ON UNIVERSITY AVE TO TELL US WHAT TO EXPECT.

YES. I’M HERE ON UNIVERSITY AVENUE AND IT IS LOOKING TO BE AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL FALL DAY. A BIT CLOUDY BUT WE’RE HOPING TO REACH A HIGH OF 78.
SO WARM ENOUGH TO NOT NEED A JACKET, BUT COOL ENOUGH TO START WEARING YOUR FAVORITE FALL SWEATERS, LADIES.
THROUGHOUT THE DAY TODAY, TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO FLUCTUATE A
LITTLE BIT WITH THE HIGHEST BEING 78 DEGREES, AND LOWEST 61. BUT
TOMORROW COULD GET AS LOW AS 51 DEGREES, BUT WITH A HIGH BACK IN THE
SEVENTIES. UNFORTUNATELY WE’RE LOOKING AT A 50 PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN, BUT FRIDAY WE GO BACK TO SUNSHINE.
THAT’S YOUR CURRENT FORECAST, BACK TO THE STUDIO.
BACK TO YOU IN THE STUDIO.
A STUDENT DRAMA PRODUCTION IS OPENING THIS WEEKEND BUT IT’S ALREADY GETTING A TON OF SUPPORT.
OUR SHO-SHANA STAHL IS LIVE IN STUDIO WITH MORE.

THANKS MORGAN AND JILL.
THE PRODUCTION “FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/ WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENOUGH” OPENS THIS WEEKEND AT THE LOFT THEATER IN SYRACUSE.
THIS IS A STUDIO PRODUCTION PRODUCED BY STUDENTS AND PERFORMED BY STUDENTS.
THE SHOW TELLS THE STORIES OF SEVEN WOMEN OF COLOR THROUGH RHYTHM, MUSIC AND DANCE.
ACTRESS KAYLA KING SAYS THIS SHOW IS IMPORTANT TO HER BECAUSE IT ALLOWS HER TO EXPRESS HERSELF.

“As someone who is biracial but who is white passing, I am not often given the opportunity to be black and I’m not given the opportunity to explore that side of myself.”

ACTRESSES DON’T PLAY SPECIFIC CHARACTERS THROUGHOUT THE SHOW BUT
ACT AS BOTH NARRATORS AND CHARACTERS WITHIN THE STORIES BEING TOLD.
KING SAYS THAT PEOPLE IN THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT FEEL SUPPRESSED
BECAUSE THEY AREN’T GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITIES TO PLAY ROLES THAT EXPRESS THEIR CULTURES AND EXPERIENCES.
THIS SHOW GIVES WOMEN OF COLOR A CHANCE TO DO SO.

“Shows that there was a need and a lacking of this kind of material in the work that we have been doing in the past and that when this show came up, people’s ears perked up a little bit.”

SUPPORT FROM FELLOW STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAS BEEN OVERWHELMING.
ALL SIX SHOWS HAVE ALREADY COMPLETELY SOLD OUT.
KING SAYS WHEN YOU BREAK IT DOWN, THE STORIES ARE WHAT MATTERS MOST.

“If you take away everything…you take away the lights…you take away even the actors and you just
EVEN THOUGH THE SHOW IS FULLY SOLD OUT, THEY HAVE ADDED INVITED DRESS REHEARSALS AT THE THEATER TONIGHT AND TOMORROW NIGHT AT 8 PM.
SEATS FOR THESE SHOWS ARE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M SHOSHANA STAHL.

COMING UP HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL–
THE 17TH ANNUAL SYRACUSE UNIVERISTY HUMANS RIGHTS FESTIVAL IS THIS WEEKEND!
WHEN WE COME BACK ALEX PEEBLES SIT’S DOWN WITH THE EVENT ORGANIZER TO TELL US MORE.
STAY WITH US FOR THOSE STORIES AND MUCH MORE HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
ALSO – SHARIF KING IS IN STUDIO TO TALK ABOUT HOW STUDENTS ARE REACTING TO THE 20-20 COMMENCEMENT BEING MOVED FROM THE DOME TO THE QUAD.

WELCOME BACK TO MORNINGS ON THE HILL. STUDENTS CONTINUE TO REACT AFTER THE RECENT NEWS ABOUT COMMENCEMENT.
IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD, COMMENCEMENT FOR THE CLASS OF 2020 WILL BE HELD IN THE QUAD INSTEAD OF THE DOME.
SHARIFF KING HAS BEEN TRACKING COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. SHARIFF, WHAT ARE STUDENTS SAYING?
MORGAN, JILLIAN, STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THE CHANGE IN AN EMAIL FROM
PROVOST MICHELLE WHEATLY (WHEAT-LEE). REACTION HAS BEEN MIXED, BUT MOST STUDENTS ARE QUESTIONING THE REASON WHY.
ACCORDING TO THE UNIVERSITY, CONSTRUCTION AT THE DOME IS THE MAIN
REASON WHY COMMENCEMENT WILL BE HELD OUTSIDE RATHER THAN INSIDE
BENEATH THE DOME BUBBLE. IT’S THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DOME OPENED IN
1980 THAT CEREMONIES WILL BE HELD SOMEWHERE ELSE. INSTEAD, COMMENCMENT WILL BE HELD IN THE QUAD, AND THAT HAS RAISED MANY QUESTIONS.

“HAVE IT ON THE QUAD HERE BUT THEY’RE NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO FIT ALL THE
PEOPLE AND ALLL THE PARENTS. THERE’S NOT GONNA BE ENOUGH TICKETS TO
GO AROUND. I DON’T KNOW, THERE’S GOTTA BE SOMEONE BETTER THAN IN THE
MIDDLE OF THIS QUAD. KINDA COOL THAT OUR CLASS GETS TO BE OUTSIDE THIS
YEAR ON THE QUAD. IT’S GONNA BE REALLY COOL.”
WE’VE BEEN KEEPING TRACK OF THE CHATTER ON SOCIAL MEDIA REGARDING COMMENCEMENT, AND HERE’S SOME OF WHAT WE’VE FOUND.
REMEMBER, YOU CAN ALWAYS FOLLOW US ON TWITTER AT ‘MORNIN-ON-THEHILL’. JILLIAN AND MORGAN, BACK TO YOU.

UPSTATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OPENED A SIMULATION CENTER THAT RESEMBLES
A REAL HOSPITAL WITH PATIENT ROOMS. MORNING’S ON THE HILL REPORTER ALEXA ROTH HAS THE STORY.
THIS NEW TRAINING FACILITY GIVES STUDENTS ACCESS TO MANNEQUINS WHO WILL SIMULATE REAL HUMAN ILLNESS AND EMERGENCY.
DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AT THE SIMULATION CENTER, ERIK RUFA, SAYS THAT BEFORE SIMULATION, STUDENTS HAD TO LEARN FROM BOOK KNOWLEDGE.
“The students can actually practice on a simulated body part to do like a spinal tap. It’s safer for the patient it’s better for the student to learn in simulation before then they translate their skills to a real person.”
SIMULATION TECHNICIAN, JESSICA SWEET, SAYS CONFIDENCE IS IMPORTANT TO STUDENTS SUCCESS BUT EXPOSURE IS WHAT SETS THEM APART.
“The more that they can practice and learn from different scenarios. Not everybody presents the same. You could have the same outcome, one has a heart attack but it presents completely different. All those presentations make that clinical judgement that much better.”
BECAUSE OF THE MANNEQUINS HERE AT UPSTATE UNIVERSITY, MEDICAL STUDENTS ARE NOW MORE CONFIDENT TO GO OUT IN THE FIELD AND PRACTICE IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS.
UPSTATE MEDICAL STUDENT, JOHN KANGLOU, SAYS IN THE PAST, THEY USED ACTORS TO SIMULATE REAL PATIENTS WHO WERENT ALWAYS AVAILABLE.
“The fact that there’s a center that you can go down to at any time and practice whenever.
That will make you far more fluent in every skill that you need to know.”
THE OVERALL GOAL OF THE SIMULATION CENTER IS TO EMPHASIZE PATIENT SAFETY AND MAKE SURE PATIENTS GET THE BEST QUALITY OF CARE.

GOVERNOR CUOMO HAS RECENTLY ISSUED 2-MILLION-DOLLARS IN GRANTS FOR New York STATE BOMB SQUADS.
THESE K-9 UNITS ARE USED IN ALL MAJOR EVENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY.
MORNINGS ON THE HILLS REPORTER DANA CASULLO IS LIVE TO TELL US MORE.
SYRACUSE AND ON-IN-DA-GA COUNTY EACH RECIEVED ONE-HUNDREDTHOUSAND-DOLLARS IN GRANTS AS PART OF THE STATE DISTRIBUTION. I SPOKE WITH ONE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT WHO HAS A K-9 UNIT, TO DISCUSS THE TRAINING THESE DOGS GO THROUGH.
Page 1
“He is my best friend.”
OFFICER JOE BRAINERD WORKS FOR THE SYRACUSE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT. HE ALSO WORKS AS A K-9 HANDLER FOR THE BOMB DETECTION UNIT.
BASED ON PERSONALITY TRAITS HE’S BEEN PAIRED WITH HIS DOG, “HALK” SINCE APRIL.
HALK IS ONE OF THE MANY DOGS THAT GOES THROUGH BOMB DETECTION
“Our instructors will take the explosive finds and place them in the room where there will be a known find or an unknown find. The difference between the two is that we obviously know where one is and we don’t know where the other one is.”
AS THE DOGS GO THROUGH THE TRAINING, THE OFFICERS CAN READ THEIR BODY LANGUAGE TO KNOW IF THEY ARE RESPONDING THE WAY THEY WOULD LIKE
“The tail will start wagging. They’ll close their mouth and really start inhaling. They will get really excited when they get to that find. And because we know where it is, we can get them into that correct behavior of sitting when they find it.”
TRAINING RUNS A MONTH AND A HALF FOR THE EXPLOSIVE DOGS IN THE DETECTOR SCHOOL.
BRAINERD SAYS MANY OF THE DOGS COME FROM EUROPE BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY OF BREEDING AND THE TRAINING AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.
THESE PLACES INCLUDE COUNTRIES LIKE HUNGARY, HOLLAND AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC.
“My dog specifically is from Hungary. And the sergeant will go down there and actually pair the dog with the handler’s personalities, kind of try to match them up. And there’s certain drives we look for in those dogs.”

JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DOG YOU SEE, MAKE SURE YOU ASK THE HANDLER BEFORE PETTING THEM.
