THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER IS CURRENTLY GOING ON AT TURNING STONE CASINO IN CENTRAL NEW YORK. OUR MORNINGS ON THE HILL REPORTER CARSON FOWLER HAS MORE ON THE EVENT AND ITS IMPACT ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
WANSHI. POKER TO THE AVERAGE PLAYER IS MOSTLY A GAME OF LUCK. BUT TO THOSE THAT PLAY AT THE COMPETITIVE LEVEL IT’S ALL ABOUT STRATEGY. I TRAVELED TO TURNING STONE EARLIER THIS WEEK TO GET INSIGHT ON SOME OF THE GAMES TAKING PLACE TODAY IN THE COMING DAYS. TAKE A LOOK.
TODAY AND IN THE COMING COMING DAYS. TAKE A LOOK. JUST A COUPLE MILES NORTH OF SYRACUSE, TURNING STONE RESORT AND CASINO IS HOSTING NEW YORK’S ONLY WORLD SERIES OF POKER EVENTS BEGAN MARCH 16TH AND RUN UNTIL THE 27TH. TODAY’S MAIN EVENT IS A MONSTER STACK NO LIMIT HOLD’EM GAME WITH A GUARANTEED $100,000 IN WINNINGS. LAST WEEK, I HAD THE CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY PH.D. STUDENT LUKE KAPLAN, WHERE HE GAVE ME SOME INSIGHT ON GAME THEORY AND HOW POKER PLAYERS UTILIZE DIFFERENT STRATEGIES TO BEAT THEIR OPPONENTS.
YOU ONLY HAVE THE INFORMATION TRULY THAT’S IN YOUR HAND, AND SO YOU’RE TRYING TO MAKE THE BEST PLAY BASED ON THAT. YOU’RE TRYING TO FIND WHAT WE MIGHT CALL LIKE A DOMINANCE STRATEGY WHERE BASED ON WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR HAND AND POTENTIALLY SURMISE ABOUT YOUR OPPONENT’S HAND, WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.
AS NEW YORK’S MOST AWARDED RESORT, TURNING STONE OFFERS A WORLD CLASS STOP ON THE 2023 WORLD SERIES OF POKER CIRCUIT. AND NOT ONLY IS THE EVENT FUN FOR ITS PLAYERS, BUT IT’S ECONOMICALLY IMPACTFUL TO THE SURROUNDING AREA AND THE CITY THAT IT KEEPS HAVING LIKE A BIG EVENT.
IT’S LIKE A NATIONALLY KNOWN EVENT RIGHT AT TURNING STONE RIGHT NEARBY IS GOING TO HAVE A HUGE IMPACT, RIGHT? YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE THE TOURISM AND ALL OF THE DIFFERENT SERVICES THAT THEY’RE GOING TO NEED, BOTH WITH HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, AND IT COULD ALSO RESULT IN THE AREA BEING MORE KNOWN FOR THESE TYPE OF THINGS. AND SO DRAWING PEOPLE FOR FUTURE TOURNAMENTS IN ADDITION TO THIS, ESPECIALLY NOW.
WHETHER YOU’RE A PROFESSIONAL POKER PLAYER, AN ASPIRING AMATEUR, OR A PLAY AT ANY LEVEL IN BETWEEN. IT’S A THRILLING TIME TO BE AT TURNING STONE, WHERE THE EVENT HAS THE WHOLE PLACE INFUSED WITH EXCITEMENT. REPORTING FROM IN-STUDIO. IM CARSO FOWLER.
SPRING HAS SPRUNG, AT LEAST ACCORDING TO THE CALENDAR.
MONDAY WAS THE FINAL DAY OF WINTER, WHICH MEANS TODAY IS THE FIRST FULL DAY OF THE NEW SEASON. SO WHAT WILL THAT MEAN WEATHER-WISE? SARAL KHARE JOINS US OUTSIDE WITH THE LATEST.
THANK YOU GUYS I’M RIGHT OUTSIDE NEWHOUSE AND IT’S A GREAT DAY TODAY. CONSIDERING IT SNOWED LAST WEEK TODAY IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. IT’S A GREAT DAY TO GO OUT IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY SUNNY TODAY AND THE WEATHER SHOULD BE AROUND IN THE LOW 50’S TO MID 40’S ALL AFTERNOON AND EVENING. IT IS A LITTLE WINDY WITH WINDS BLOWING AT 8 MPH BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT SHOULD BE PRETTY A SMOOTH DAY.
COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL — TODAY IS NATIONAL COMMON COURTESY DAY. WE WILL HAVE MORE ON HOW THE MORNING ON THE HILL NEWSROOM HELPS THOSE AROUND THEM.
TIME TO CHECK YOUR WEATHER FOR TODAY.
SARAL KHRAE IS IN STUDIO WITH A LOOK AT YOUR FULL WEATHER FORECAST.
THANK YOU GUYS IT’S CURRENTLY 40 DEGREES AND IT’S PARTLY CLOUDY RIGHT NOW AND IT FEELS LIKE 34 DEGREES BECAUSE OF THE WIND BEING AT 8 MILES PER HOUR. HUMIDITY IS AT AROUND 60% AND AROUND 12PM THE SUN SHOULD COME OUT AND IT SHOULD BE 50 DEGREES AND IT WILL BE LIKE THAT UNTIL LATE IN THE EVENING.
TOMORROW IN THE MORNING IT’S GOING TO BE PRETTY COOL WITH IT BEING 33 DEGREES AROUND WHEN THE SUN RISES AND IN THE AFTERNOON IT SHOULD BE 58 DEGREES. BUT IN THE EVENING THAT’S WHEN IT STARTS TO GET A LITTLE RUSTY AS THERE WILL BE SCATTERED SHOWERS IN THE EVENING AND THE NIGHT.
THURSDAY IT’S GOING TO START RAINING MORE HEAVILY STARTING IN THE MORNING AROUND 10AM AND IT WILL PROBABLY RAIN UNTIL THE LATE EVENING SO IF YOU’RE PLANNING ON GOING OUT BRING AN UMBRELLA AND HEAVY RAINCOAT. FRIDAY IT SHOULDN’T RAIN AND SHOULD BE A COOL DAY WITH TEMPERATURES BEING AT A HIGH OF 45 IN THE AFTERNOON AND A LOW OF 33 DEGREES AND OVERALL SHOULD BE A CHILLY CLOUDY DAY. SATURDAY IT”S ALSO GOING TO BE A HIGH OF 45 DEGREES BUT THEN THE RAIN STARTS UP AGAIN AROUND 9AM AND IT WILL GO UP UNTIL THE LATE EVENING.
SO THURSDAY AND SATURDAY THOSE ARE THE DAYS TO LOOK OUT FOR. BACK TO YOU GUYS IN THE STUDIO.
A MOCK TRIAL INVOLVING THE LAW AND BROADCASTING AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM STUDENTS HAS BEEN WRAPPED UP. IT TOOK PLACE IN THE DINEEN LAW BUILDING. OUR ISABEL FLORES JOINS US IN STUDIO WITH TWO SU STUDENTS WHO WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.
GOOD MORNING, I’M HERE WITH KARL WINTER AND SHANNON CHAMBERLAIN, BOTH ARE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WHO WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A MOCK TRIAL.
SHANNON, BEING A SECOND YEAR LAW STUDENT, CAN YOU JUST OUTLINE YOUR ROLE IN THE MOCK TRIAL?
YES. SO I REPRESENTED THE PROSECUTION, WHICH IS THE STATE, AND WE WERE PROSECUTING THE CHARGES AGAINST MORTIMER SMITH IN THAT CASE.
KARL, BEING A FELLOW BROADCASTING AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM STUDENT, CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOUR SECTION WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING?
BASICALLY, WE COVERED IT AS NORMAL NEWS REPORTERS WOULD. SO WE SAT WHERE THE SPECTATORS WOULD SIT, TOOK NOTES THROUGHOUT THE CASE. WE COULDN’T RECORD ANYTHING. AND THEN AFTER THE TRIAL WAS OVER, WE INTERVIEWED THE PROSECUTORS, THE DEFENSE ATTORNEYS AND EVEN THE DEFENDANT WHO WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY. SO WE GOT TO TALK TO THE DEFENDANT AS WELL.
PERFECT. SO, SHANNON, YOU MENTIONED MORTIMER’S SMITH. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT THAT CASE WAS ABOUT?
YES. SO OUR CASE WAS BASED ON THE TV SHOW RICK AND MORTY, IN WHICH IN THIS SITUATION, MORTIMER SMITH AND RICK SANCHEZ WENT TO MEET ON AN OVERPASS WHERE RICK TESTED OUT HIS ANTIGRAVITY SPRAY BY PUTTING IT ON A BOWLING BALL AND DROPPING IT OVER THE OVERPASS WHERE IT STRUCK A VEHICLE WHO SAWED OFF THE ROAD CONTAINING THE INDIVIDUAL NAMED JUNEBUG, WHO DIED IN THE ACCIDENT. AND SO WE WERE PROSECUTING MORTIMER SMITH FOR ACCESSORY LIABILITY FOR MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SECOND DEGREE BECAUSE RICK SANCHEZ HAD ALREADY BEEN CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SECOND DEGREE.
SO KARL, GOING OFF OF THAT WAS WAS KIND OF YOUR ANGLE THAT YOU DID FOR THE STORY YOU WROTE ON THIS TRIAL.
BASICALLY, WE HAD TO FOCUS ON THE CASE THAT THE DEFENSE MADE AND WHY THEY WERE ABLE TO WIN THE CASE AND FIND THE DEFENDANT NOT GUILTY. SO BASICALLY, AS NEWS REPORTERS, OUR JOB WAS TO KIND OF PARSE THROUGH A LOT OF LEGAL JARGON AND MAKE IT MAKE SENSE TO YOUR EVERYDAY VIEWER AND SHORTEN WHAT WAS ABOUT A TWO AND A HALF HOUR TRIAL INTO ABOUT A TWO MINUTE STORY.
SO WOULD YOU SAY THAT THIS MOCK TRIAL HELPED TO, YOU KNOW, KIND OF HELPED YOU FOR THE REAL WORLD IN THIS SITUATION?
YOU FOR THE REAL WORLD IN THIS SITUATION? YES. AS SOMEONE WHO’S GOING TO BECOME AN ATTORNEY SOON, I PREPARE TO GET INVOLVED WITH LITIGATION AS I ENTER THE LEGAL WORLD. AND THIS TRIAL HELPED ME A LOT TO THINK ON MY FEET. OBJECTIONS HAVE TO BE MADE WITHIN A FEW SECONDS OF HEARING THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS AS YOU’RE SITTING AT YOUR TABLE. AND SO I THINK THIS PRACTICE REALLY HELPED ME GET USED TO PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT THE OTHER SIDE WAS SAYING.
AND KARL?
ABSOLUTELY. I THINK THE BEST PART WAS HOW SERIOUSLY BOTH THE JOURNALISM STUDENTS AND THE LAW STUDENTS TOOK THE CASE. THAT REALLY HELPED US TO TREAT IT SERIOUSLY, EVEN THOUGH THE ACTUAL FACTS WERE KIND OF A JOKE BASED ON RICK AND MORTY. BUT I THINK THE LAW STUDENTS ESPECIALLY DID A FANTASTIC JOB LIKE THE DEFENDANT, THAT THEY’RE LAW STUDENTS, NOT ACTORS, BUT THEY REALLY PLAYED THE ROLE AS WELL.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING ME, SHANNON AND KARL. I’LL SEND IT BACK OVER TO OUR ANCHORS ELLIS AND WANSHI.
A SYRACUSE FIREFIGHTER HAS BEEN HOSPITALIZED AFTER TAKING DAMAGE FROM A HOUSE FIRE EARLIER THIS MORNING. THE SYRACUSE FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS WHEN THEY ARRIVED ON THE SCENE, HEAVY SMOKE COVERED THE TWO-FAMILY HOUSE ON PARK STREET. THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT IN UNDER 30-MINUTES HOWEVER FIRST RESPONDERS STAYED AT THE SCENE FOR MULTIPLE HOURS TO PERFORM CLEANUP OPERATIONS. NOBODY WAS HOME DURING THE INCIDENT, AND THE INJURED FIREFIGHTER IS EXCPECTED TO BE RELEASED TODAY.
TODAY IS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY THAT CELEBRATES THE GOLDEN RULE. MORNING’S ON THE HILL REPORTER JEREMY LYNCH IS HERE LIVE IN STUDIO TO TELL US MORE. JEREMY?
THANK YOU WANSHI. DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE MORE CURTIOUS THESE DAYS? ACCORDING TO A STUDY DONE BY A STUDENT AT COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY.ONLY 1 OUT OF 4 PEOPLE WOULD HOLD THE DOOR FOR ANOTHER PERSON. I WENT AROUND THE NEWSROOM THIS MORNING TO SEE HOW THEY EXTEND KINDNESS TO OTHERS.
THE WAY I SHOW COMMON COURTESY IS BY GIVING LITTLE THINGS OUT. I LOVE GIVING TO PEOPLE SO STUFF LIKE HAND-WRITTEN NOTE CARDS AND CANDIES. IT’S WHAT MAKES PEOPLES DAY.
PROBABLY JUST GIVING COMPLIMENTS I FEEL LIKE THAT LIKE EVEN TELLING SOMEBODY THAT THEIR HAIR LOOKS NICE. THEY GOT NICE CLOTHES ON LIKE THEIR SHOES AND VERY UNDERRATED AND INVALUABLE COMPLIMENT AND IT’S ONLY GOING TO MAKE THEIR DAY BRIGHTER.
ONE WAY I LIKE TO SHOW RESPECT TO OTHERS IS WHEN I’M HOLDING THE DOOR FOR AN EXTREMELY LONG AMOUNT OF TIME AND THAT PERSON DOESN’T KNOW WHETHER THEY HAVE TO RUN OR IF I WILL SHUT IT ON THEM. I LIKE TO HOLD BACK THAT MOMENT FOR A LONG TIME. INTRODUCE MYSELF WHEN THEY GET TO THE DOOR NO MATTER HOW LONG THEY ARE. LONG DISTANCES AND JUST TO WITHSTAND THAT TO HAPPEN.
I THINK ONE THING THAT EVERYONE SHOULD DO IS IT IS ALWAYS NICE TO GIVE SOMEONE A COMPLIMENT AND YOU WANT TO BE TREATED THE WAY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED. SO TREAT PEOPLE LIKE THAT.
PLEASE THANK YOU OPEN THE DOOR. OFFER MY HELP ON ANYTHING.
JUST TREAT OTHERS HOW YOU WANT TO. YOU WANT TO TREAT YOURSELF WITH RESPECT AND YOU WOULD WANT OTHERS TO BE RESPECTFUL TOWARDS YOU. SO YOU SHOULD DO THIS SAME TOWARDS ONTO OTHERS.
TO SHOW THE GOLDEN RULE TO OTHERS.YOU CAN SMILE OR SAY GOOD MORNING TO PEOPLE THAT YOU SEE IN THE MORNING. AND USING PLEASE AND THANK YOU GOES A LONG WAY. I HOPE THAT YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY. REPORTING LIVE FROM IN STUDIO.I’M JEREMY LYNCH FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
