to our top stories this half hour
if you are someone who has wanted the
vaccine but wasn’t eligible to get it
you may be now our darasha singleton
breaks the new eligibility guidelines
for the covid vaccine
and the latest covid numbers that’s
right new york state has loosened their
guidelines by making some
big changes as of yesterday new yorkers
aged 30 plus
are eligible for the vaccine to get
scheduled instead of having to be
on the wait list and and from a week
from now
16 plus will be eligible to actually
schedule
their vaccine as well march 29th
governor andrew cuomo released
breaking news via tweet the tweet read

covid 19 vaccines
and beginning tomorrow at 8 am all new

the vaccines the s-u community also
received an
email encouraging all students living in
central new york
to make an appointment the email
contained
important details such as how to sign up
how to add your name to a waitlist and
how to submit proof
of your vaccination county executive
ryan mcmahon held a covid 19 briefing
sharing details of the new eligibility
oh
certainly we will uh be vaccinating
those demographics just like we will
uh with college kids as well so we can
really attack where these cases are
generating syracuse student tara arya
has completed her vaccination and hopes
that more
syracuse students will now sign up for
the vaccine
um it’s awesome makes me really happy
makes me feel like you know
normal times are slowly around the
corner i be able to get
both of my vaccines you know i feel
great it kind of brings that light at
the end of the tunnel and so
i’m really excited and i’m happy that
this was able to happen so early on
students can soon start making those
appointments on the onondaga county
health website
now let’s take a look at the latest
covid cases
as of march 30th there are 16 new
student cases and 257 students
who are currently in quarantine
within central new york we are at
104 current active cases now i do have a
feeling that those cases will start
to look better with the new eligibility
of the covid
vaccine cases now back to you all in the
studio i’m daaisha singleton reporting
live darasha thank you syracuse
university announced it will host an
in-person commencement
for both the classes of 2020 and 2021
this year
class of 2021’s commencement will be
held on the weekend of may 22nd
and the 23rd the class of 2020’s
commitment commencement will be held on
september 19th
guest attendance however is still
unclear
su chancellor kent syverud said in a
statement yesterday
quote we will do everything possible to
make this year’s celebration special for
our graduates
however this year’s activities will be
different than years past
commencement will take place for
students on campus and will also be live
streamed for families and friends
each school’s convocations will be
virtual this year
while some colleges across the country
are cutting tuition rates
syracuse university is raising
undergraduate tuition rates
the tuition rate is rising by 3 percent
for
students admitted since the fall of
2018.
the cost of housing and meal plans will
also be impacted by the increase
the rate hikes come at a time where su
is seeing a record number of
applications from prospective students
georgia’s new voting law has received
widespread backlash
many believe the law suppresses the
voices of marginalized communities our
caleb britt spoke with the syracuse
student who tells us how she thinks the
law affects college students
caleb good morning guys
among many things the new law changes
the process of receiving an absentee
ballot
a student tells us why she believes this
creates a barrier for her
and other syracuse students from georgia
the law
syracuse student amanda morris is from
georgia and says she was disappointed to
see the law passed
she says she doesn’t like the change to
absentee ballot voting
which now requires an id instead of a
signature verification
to receive a ballot it continues to shut
doors
on different groups of people mora says
requiring an id to receive an absentee
ballot
can make voting harder for students from
georgia like her
she says not being accessible to a
georgia dmv
to get an id or renew it if needed can
prevent students from voting
i think we’re going to see a lot of
young people being shut out
because you know they’re taking
something that was very easy
and making it unnecessarily hard
a money sutherland is an author and
georgia activist who says she wasn’t
surprised by the new law
after georgia turned blue in the past
presidential election
she says the law can discourage students
from voting
first time voters may get discouraged
from voting they may not want to vote
or it just creates more
anxiety when it comes to the idea of
voting in their
their voice being heard sutherland says
although there are restrictive voting
laws in many states
it’s important to be vigilant keep our
civic engagement going make sure we get
people registered to vote
voter education is important because
those who don’t know
will do wrong and fall into the trap of
bills like
sb 202 caleb
thank you syracuse university lgbtq
resource center is holding several
virtual events for this year’s
transgender week of liberation
the week began monday which consists of
events celebrating transgender non-bear
non-binary and gender non-conforming
people all this week
some of the events include a group
social open
a series of virtual workshops and a
keynote performance to conclude
the week on saturday each year syracuse
university participates in a global
event called take back the night
it’s dedicated to raise awareness about
sexual domestic and relationship
violence
this year su students are participating
by speaking out in a creative way
our reporter dan baldwin has the story
the clothesline project has helped give
students a chance to put their artistic
talents to good use
on the third floor of the shine center
the clothesline project is a walkway
of shirts created by students who have
been impacted
by some form of interpersonal violence
but it gives us space to
allow people who have suffered from
sexual violence
to have a place of calamity and safety
and it’s really hard to foster such a
large community
on such a big campus but this is just
one step we can do
to support one another each shirt
displays a unique message
survivors use the shirt as a medium to
communicate their stories
but take back the night committee member
mellie delgado believes using clothes
has a deeper meaning
a lot of things with sexual assault
revolve around the clothes you wear
especially for women
so i feel like using the clothesline
project as a way to express
like the suffrage of this type of
violence
allows people to take back the whole
ideology of
what you wear is the reason why
something happens to you
throughout the display stars were posted
on the shirts as well
there were more messages of hope
inspiration and safety
delgado said she hopes this event will
help unite the campus
behind the people speaking out it just
gives us a reason to
come together more than any other year
with all the
like physical distance we have and i
hope that
we continue it in the years to come for
its
dual meaning and its receptiveness
take back the night culminates in a
virtual rally held at 7pm tonight
you can register for that rally over
zoom on the barn center website
reporting live with mornings on the hill
i’m dan baldwin back to you guys
dan thank you coming up here on mornings
on the hill a campus networking group
has
big plans for the end of international
women’s month
also coming up summer weather is coming
to an end and that’s no april fool’s
joke
stay with us for those story and more
here on mornings on the hill
well you know sir we’re pretty used to
seeing some strange weather here in
central new york but
this week might be one of the strangest
one of them all and james corrigan is
live
out on university ave to tell us what to
expect this week
james how’s it looking out there well
this winter into spring has been a
roller coaster ride to say the least
but this week may be the bumpiest
portion of it
yet the temperature right now is 58
degrees
and it’s not expected to budge with
steady rain expected throughout the day
but
tomorrow that rain will turn into snow
take a look at this a high percentage
for snow tomorrow with as many as
four inches expected and it could be
even more in parts of central new york
now on top of that the snow
is expected to be wet and heavy as well
so be wary of that if you’re outside
shoveling
and the amazing thing is that the snow
will be gone almost as quickly as it
began
on friday it will still be cold but
immediately
into the 50s on saturday and sunday with
much of next week expected to be in the
60s so
that snow that will be falling tomorrow
will likely be gone by the weekend
and then by next week we could all be
back in shorts
once again back to you in the studio
a little more normalcy is coming to
campus the university union just
announced their very first
virtual concert since the pandemic
started the show will feature all
student musicians
this event will take place in the shine
center for a limited amount of guests
and will be streamed live on youtube for
everyone else
a networking group on campus has taken
the end of international women’s month
seriously
our own madison hilimire more on
the story
the women’s network is a professional
group for women that was started at su
back in 2017
but over the years the group has grown
immensely
and it’s now grown over 40 college
campuses so it’s very recent but
obviously it’s gotten a great following
on campus
and we are the original
college where it started so it’s really
an honor to be the president of it
the network has hundreds of members on
campus all with the same goal
president summer cerebone says so um
we’re all about celebrating ambition
that’s actually why jamie
um vinik founded it was because she felt
like there was such a negative
connotation when it came to
the word ambition in women and with men
it’s often as
a praise and with women it’s like you’re
too busy you’re too ambitious and she
was like no
we’re going to change that to celebrate
the end of international women’s month
the network is hosting a women in the
sports industry week
professionals from the nba ncaa and the
nfl are all speaking over zoom
so last night we had a panel with women
from the nba
and naa ncaa and
tomorrow night we have a conversation
with two nfl sports journalists
one of them is a new house grad and then
thursday night
of my personal favorite we are bringing
in the owner of the buffalo bills
kimpagula cerebone says that the group
welcomes any new members and you can
join by filling out the link in their
instagram bio
madison hilimire mornings on the hill
thanks madison still to come here on
mornings on the hill
hear what head football coach dino
babers had to say about prep this all
stay with us that story and more just
ahead
good morning i’m samantha croston with
your sports update here on mornings on
the hill
march madness has been wild enough but
the craziness continues with a high
number of both men’s and women’s
basketball players who all recently
entered the transfer portal
on the men’s team john bull ajack robert
braswell and kadari richmond have
entered their name into the transfer
portal
and are looking for a new home richmond
appeared in all 28 games for the orange
averaging
6.3 points and 3.1 assists in 21 minutes
per game
braswell appeared in 24 games and was a
key contributor in syracuse’s postseason
run
ajack appeared in 10 games well coach
boeheim released a statement on tuesday
wishing the departing players all the
best in their future endeavors
it read i want to thank bull rab and
kadari
for all they contributed to the syracuse
program i especially want to thank
rob and kadari for the key role they
played in the success we had
at the end of the year boeheim continued
on to say our staff is looking forward
to working with the returning players
who gave us a great postseason
performance turnover is expected on any
basketball team but syracuse women’s
basketball is pushing it to unusual
levels
eight players out of a team of 15 girls
have entered their name into the
transfer portal
the list includes several starters the
most prominent of those
being senior guard kiara lewis and
junior guard emily engstler
lewis was syracuse’s leading scorer the
last two seasons and earned national
player of the week owners twice as a
junior
engstler was the acc sixth player of the
year in 2021
she’s expected to be the leader of the
team next year so far
coach quinton hillsman has not released
a statement on the transfer frenzy
we spoke to syracuse sports expert brent
axe who says
someone should talk soon or else the
future success of the syracuse women’s
basketball program
could be at risk too many players
that if syracuse contacts them they’re
going to do their research
they’re going to get on google and look
at this and talk to people and be like
well why did eight players leave that
program
right there they’re gonna have questions
themselves
that the coaching staff coach q in
particular better have good answers for
with the return of sunshine and blue
skies there is another fall sport
gearing up for the springtime
our live reporter kathina montgomery has
the story
good morning guys syracuse football is
gearing up
with speed and adding a lot of new faces
to the 2022 recruiting
class this is the fastest that head
coach dino babers
has recruited since 2016.
syracuse football just had their first
official spring at the press conference
yesterday
the 19 regulations the coaches are no
longer allowed to make
in-person visits to their recruits but
despite these regulations cuse has
already added four new players
to the 2022 recruiting class
and years prior babies hasn’t had that
fourth recruit until
around mid-june or late april babesr said
that the new regulations have actually
been very helpful
and the pandemic and all that kind of
stuff that you’re that we’re actually
getting kids faster
and getting an opportunity to spend more
time with them in video chats and stuff
like that
more opportunities with the mom and dad
to feel better about you know what even
though this guy hasn’t been on campus
you know we’ve seen the mom we’ve seen
the dad we’ve got all this information
we got a lot of tape we like the young
man uh let’s go ahead and go on them
even though they haven’t been here yet
so i think because of
what people what the ncaa done with
the zoom call and phase time and all
that other kind of stuff
that uh process is being moved up a
little bit this is the fastest
recruiting class in the last
five years with the four recruits cuse
is getting three defensive players and
one
offensive player one of those guys being
a three-star running back laquint
allen syracuse hasn’t been winning that
many games as of the past two seasons
but the 2021 football season is set to
kick off
september 4th reporting for mornings on
the hill
i’m kathina montgomery the beginning of
the college lacrosse season
fans have had april 3rd marked on their
calendars this saturday syracuse women’s
lacrosse will take on unc
down in chapel hill the number two
orange and the number one tar heels are
both currently undefeated but one of
those teams will have to let go of that
perfect record
saturday will be a battle between two of
the most high scoring offenses in the
country
syracuse’s offensive stars are junior
attackers megan carney and megan tyrell
the offensive charge on unc is led by
attackers jamie ortega
and katie hogue hogue is confident in
her team’s ability to score the ball
but she says before that they have to
get the ball
draw is going to be key for us honestly
like
can’t score and you know have that
offense that we talked about without the
ball
those 50 50 balls and the draw like
that’s where
you know the game is gonna swing
more exciting news today soon the
general public will be allowed to attend
lacrosse games
in the dome the university said it plans
to allow the general public into the
carrier dome on april 10th
when cues host virginia for a women’s
lacrosse game
still ahead on mornings on the hill
still ahead on mornings on hill
some big news for marvel fans and
everything you need to know about
upcoming summer blockbusters that and
more when we come back
pop stars are often pushing the envelope
with suggestive themes in their music
and old town road performer little nas x
has a new video with a new controversy
around it
our rob flax breaks down the controversy
and the response from the singer
well that’s right guys little naz x’s
new video is getting a lot of pushback
from religious groups from parents and
from republican lawmakers on twitter
all criticism that he’s responding to by
doubling down on his art
he says he is an openly gay artist and
that kind of art he’s going to be making
and people who are offended by that can
go to another artist he says
he won’t be influenced by them anymore
thanks rob that is our report on this
wednesday here on on mornings on the
hill i’m manny martinez
and i’m cyera williams have a great day
