Mornings on the Hill

Mornings on the Hill for November 11, 2020

Coronavirus coverage highlights this episode, with details on the impact of the virus on students, classes and residents of Central New York.

over 140 cases of COVID 19 among students and staff how SU is responding and the county is
00:09
also facing a spike in cases mayor ben Walsh taking measures to stop the spread governor Cuomo
00:15
warning new Yorkers that cases across the state will rise heading into the winter see how his new
00:20
plan is marking counties based on their counts all that and more coming up on mornings on the hill
00:44
good morning i’m Maya Lockett thanks for joining us for the mornings on the hill
00:47
and i’m rob flaks here’s what you need to know this morning
00:54
a massive COVID spike among SU students has sent the semester online but this time it’s for a
00:59
different reason our reporter Ryan Clark is live outside with the reason why Ryan? well guys as if
01:07
2020 couldn’t get any worse now SU’s fall semester has ended a week early this Friday all classes
01:14
will now be online and will continue to be online for the rest of the semester SU administration
01:19
says the reason why is a lack of contact tracing among high coveted clusters they also said their
01:26
confidence that we’ll be healthy and happy come thanksgiving is very very low let’s look at an
01:31
email from administration from just two days ago to see exactly what this decision looks like
01:38
this decision comes just two days after the university came two cases shy of closing its
01:44
doors Syracuse university then reported 98 active cases two away from the law mandated
01:51
by governor Cuomo that would force a shutdown now the Syracuse coronavirus dashboard has 132 cases
01:57
reported as active in the past administration believed a party would shut down campus
02:02
last night the university reported 50 cases pushing SU well above the safety threshold
02:08
and they say they can’t trace them back to one single event now it seems as if what we all
02:13
thought would send students home wasn’t in fact the truth this decision comes just a week after
02:19
the university came two cases shy of closing its doors Syracuse university then reported 98 active
02:26
cases two away from the law mandated by governor Cuomo that would force a shutdown now the Syracuse
02:33
coronavirus dashboard only has 88 recorded cases as active in the past administration
02:39
believed a party would shut down campus now even with Syracuse having lower numbers the school is
02:45
eating their words you know at the end of the day we just cannot tolerate this one single incident
02:53
still very well could be one that evolves to the point where it impacts our ability to stay open
03:02
well that was a press conference from about a month ago where the administration had pointed
03:07
out multiple coveted clusters due to parties off-campus housing and bars and restaurants
03:13
now the lack of contact tracing has made it so SU administration says they don’t feel that everyone
03:19
is safe back on campus even the students that are obliging by the say safe pledge
03:23
we’ll have more on mornings on the hill about covet clusters and the status of your classes
03:28
coming up shortly reporting live on the SU campus for mornings on the hill i’m ryan clark
03:34
and with the move online coming earlier than expected some students are scrambling
03:38
to finalize their plans to move out for winter break
03:44
as we previously reported unlike in past years students need to move out for break as if they
03:49
won’t be returning to campus in the spring loading up their cars to head home something
03:53
sophomore Mackenzie murphy says is a pain it makes me mad because like there’s so much stuff you have
04:00
in your dorm that you have no use for at home and now I just have to pack up everything and
04:04
then have it sit in my basement for two months and then put everything back to where exactly
04:11
put everything back exactly where it was right now so the students have the option to box up
04:17
larger items and leave them behind for the school to ship to their permanent address
04:23
the rising cases at SU are part of a larger trend throughout Syracuse and central New York
04:28
James Corrigan is live to give us an update on the latest numbers
04:34
Maya the situation in Central New York is far from rosy Onondaga county reported
04:39
98 new positive cases yesterday bringing the total of 593 in just the last five days alone
04:45
county executive Ryan McMahon has said that today is likely to be the worst day when it comes to
04:50
new positive cases now Syracuse mayor ben Walsh is taking action starting today he’s limiting
04:56
public gatherings to just 25 people he’s cutting capacity at restaurants and places of worship and
05:01
he’s adding new testing requirements for in-person learning statewide new York state recorded
05:08
nearly 4 000 new positive cases yesterday that’s the most since May 2nd and local businesses are
05:14
already bearing the brunt regal movie theaters tomorrow will be closing all 11 of their movie
05:20
reopened just three weeks ago in new York state and with the trend of the
05:24
virus continuing to rise it’s likely that they will not be alone reporting live James Corrigan
05:30
morning’s on the hill and based on that governor Cuomo is telling New Yorkers to brace for a spike
05:36
in winter coved cases the governor has been warning new Yorkers of a stronger second
05:40
wave of the virus that could cause New York to get quote back up on that mountain of cases
05:45
the governor in a call this week outlined how counties would be designated based on the amount
05:50
of cases being assigned either a yellow or red rating now Onondaga county is currently in
05:55
the yellow zone and that’s with 593 new cases as of the latest numbers released on Friday
06:01
that means any education institution including SU will have to test 20 of faculty and students
06:07
every week now cuomo also praised the testing in new york but he stressed how much more difficult
06:12
a potential vaccine would be to distribute compared to COVID testing now he’s saying
06:17
that in response to pfizer announcing that their new vaccine was 90 percent effective in testing
06:23
and coming up here on mornings on the hill our reporter Sarah Al-Shaikh found out how SU is
06:29
honoring those who serve on veteran s day coming up a look at your weather and it’s looking just a
06:36
little wet outside stay with us for those stories and much more here are mornings on the hill
06:42
time to check your weather for today sierra rider is live out to tell us what to expect
06:46
sierra is still raining out there [Music] hey maya well good morning on this veteran s day and yes
06:54
it is still raining out here it’s definitely a white one but it’s also a little bit warm so if
06:58
you’re hanging out for some veteran s day plans or work or school definitely bring that umbrella
07:03
and that rain jacket but don’t wear too many layers because again it’s a little bit warmer
07:07
than normal so let’s look at that forecast take a look at the hourly forecast the temperatures are
07:12
still pretty warm for this time of year nothing compared to the past two record-breaking days that
07:17
we have but if you look to later in the day and night those temperatures are starting to dip back
07:21
down from the 60s to the 50s but variable weather is still coming in hot you can see that large
07:27
green wave just coming into Syracuse and that’s what we are experiencing right now
07:32
so how long will this will we be seeing this rain i’m glad that you asked because taking a look at
07:36
our five-day forecast today there’s a high of 68 but it’s raining and tomorrow and Friday
07:42
it is clearing out and cooling down making way for some more rain on Sunday
07:47
so don’t ditch that umbrella just yet and again the temperature right now it’s about 66 degrees
07:54
it’s still raining and well it’s definitely been a very interesting week for weather the past today
08:00
since we’ve had those highs of the in the high 70s 78 and 79 and today it’s raining and it’s
08:05
kind of warm still but luckily those temperatures are going to start going back to the normal trend
08:09
that we see in November here in Syracuse later this week back to you in the studio
08:15
today across the nation Americans are celebrating veteran s day here on campus
08:19
reporter Sarah Al-Shaikh tells us how our veterans center and student cadets made sure
08:23
that even in a pandemic we can celebrate a long-running SU veterans day tradition
08:31
hi guys yes i’m actually inside the SU veterans center where we actually have the longest
08:36
running consecutively running army ROTC program in the nation but
08:40
this long running program is not the only thing that’s going to be running today
08:46
it’s really important to take that special day to honor those who have served our nation
08:51
both our veterans as well as their family members who have you know served by their side
08:56
here on campus the office of veteran and military affairs at SU celebrates veterans day with a 5k
09:02
run but like a lot this year it’s going to look a little different today’s veterans day fun run is
09:09
virtual but actually with this change more people can lace up their running shoes we have alum who
09:16
are possibly even deployed or in other countries who can still participate virtually and so we have
09:20
this great virtual map that’ll have little s’s all over the map and i’m hoping all over the world
09:26
to join you must first register at cuse community then create a participant profile in dm life
09:33
where you can join a team based on the different branches of service kathleen edwards is an rotc
09:38
cadet at su who helped set up this year’s fun run she says celebrating veterans day is personal for
09:44
her although obviously I don’t know every veteran out there I understand part of what they’re going
09:48
through and so I think taking the time to honor that sacrifice that only one percent of Americans
09:53
take on is important hannah mcnabb is another SU ROTC cadet who helped with the virtual fun run
09:59
she says this day couldn’t have come sooner we’ve been planning it for
10:04
uh probably going on about three months now so it’s hap i’m happy that it’s finally happening
10:13
so the fun one actually started this morning at 6 30 a.m and it’s going to be going on for the
10:17
next 24 hours so start stretching you guys you guys still have time to put on those tiny shoes
10:22
back to you guys in the studio now for a new segment here on mornings on the hill called money
10:28
with miller our own josh miller will give you a few tips when it comes to your pocket and finances
10:34
thank you maya that’s right many were surprised when joe biden was elected he’s been doing a good
10:40
job in the election but this is promising for the next four years many thought with trump not
10:44
being elected the economy and market would take a huge hit but it’s not really going to be like
10:49
that because of Biden being elected so because of a split congress that we’re going to have with the
10:53
senate and the house of representatives to occur since 1945 having a democratic president and a
10:58
split congress has created the best average annual return in the stock market in fact in the last
11:03
75 years a split congress has generated nearly a 14 percent annual return in dollar terms when it
11:08
comes to the market a promising stat if you are looking to start investing sticking with the stock
11:13
market recent announcement from Pfizer stating about a 90 rate with the success of a vaccine a
11:20
lot of stay-at-home stocks like Netflix zoom and amazon took big hits the other day the market is
11:25
starting to shift now so look for airline and oil stocks to now be on the uptrend stocks like Exxon
11:30
Mobil chevron American airlines and southwest airlines are good stocks to pay attention to that
11:34
pay good dividends with a vaccine hopefully we’ll see these sectors start to take off
11:41
new data show Syracuse ranks 18th on the national poverty list
11:45
that’s why it is no surprise as the number of children who need beds I talked with
11:49
Syracuse professor about how he is helping providing beds for the children of Syracuse
11:55
the need here is pretty high uh estimated need Syracuse is between four and five thousand beds
12:01
four and five thousand kids don’t have beds sleep in heavenly peace is a national organization that
12:05
was founded in twin falls Idaho we build beds with community help for kids who are in our local
12:13
area and deliver the beds to the kids for free including mattresses bedding pillows and blankets
12:20
out of 240 sleeping heavily pieces nationwide Syracuse is one of the most demanding
12:32
Syracuse delivers more beds than most of the other chapters I believe we’re in the
12:37
I know we’re in the top 10 in delivered beds per year I think we’re in the top five
12:45
we’re delivering about 750 beds a year
12:56
it’s amazing you walk into a kid’s house and often you’ll walk in there’s nothing in the room at all
13:02
and we walk in the kids are all excited happy my new bed is here
13:07
it’s a dream come true is your bed buddy are you excited yay this is going to last you a long time
13:16
some kids sleep in piles of clothes on the floor sometimes they’re on an air mattress a couch
13:22
sometimes they’re three or four to a bed we’re filling two needs we’re filling the needs for the
13:26
kids who need beds but we’re also filling the need for people in Syracuse who want to give
13:30
back to the community but aren’t sure how to help and calling all jazz music fans Syracuse
13:36
university has partnered with cny jazz for some virtual concerts our sarah Ryder is live to tell
13:42
us how you can listen along sierra how can we get a listen we gotta listen hey rob well going
13:47
to a concert and listening to live music with your friends might seem like a distant memory
13:52
from the past well i’m here to tell you that cny jazz has you covered for a virtual option
13:58
the cny jazz has been partnering with Syracuse university to provide live yes live jazz music
14:04
to Syracuse students and faculty there’s a new artist featured every week and if you
14:08
don’t like jazz well don’t worry because these genres reach far beyond just jazz music I spoke
14:14
with the Syracuse alum and executive director of cny jazz about this weekly music fix [Music]
14:27
the entire impetus the entire uh
14:30
uh reason for the whole series is to give students an in-place alternative uh to uh
14:37
to club going and traveling as a health and wellness uh and uh quality of life measure
14:51
well wasn’t that some soothing jasmine music you guys well the good news is that these concerts are
14:56
two hours long and the link is available for the whole week after the concert happens on Fridays
15:02
they’re going to be keep they’re going to keep this partnership up until the end of the semester
15:06
and they’re also working on providing the links for students that are going to be on campus
15:10
for longer than the break so those of us that are around for thanksgiving can still listen to
15:14
that great jazz music and I don’t know about you guys i’m definitely going to be listening to that
15:18
music this weekend because it’s very soothing as we are entering the end of the semester
15:22
reporting live for mornings on the hill i’m sierra rider coming up on mornings on the
15:27
hill a freshman quarterback makes his su football debut and the men’s basketball schedule has been
15:32
released stay tuned after the break for the full story good morning i’m steven shoemaker and this
15:42
is your sports update Syracuse football suffered another heartbreaking loss at home on Saturday
15:47
against Boston college with both tommy Devito and rex Culpepper being sidelined with injuries
15:53
it was time for the rookie jacobi morgan to get his first career start
15:57
morgan showed a lot of heart in this game in the first quarter he displayed his versatility
16:01
scrambling out of the pocket and hitting anthony qwaley in stride down the sideline for a nice gain
16:06
but boston college’s phil jerkovic struck right back in the closing moments of the first half he
16:11
finds zay flowers for a 20-yard touchdown pass to give the eagles a 10-3 lead putting points up was
16:17
a struggle for the orange in this one in the in the third andre schmidt knocks through a 45-yard
16:23
45-yarder which was followed by three more points from the eagles to start the fourth
16:27
with time becoming a factor morgan finds his tight end aaron hackett in the back
16:30
of the end zone to make it a three-point game unfortunately time ran out for the orange as they
16:34
lost their fifth straight here’s dino babers no one likes losing but the effort was it was a
16:40
good effort and what I tried to explain is when you put an effort out like that you don’t win
16:45
it’s damaging it hurts you but if you’re going to win those type of games then you can’t have
16:50
the penalties you can’t have the turnovers it’s those things that you don’t think is really big
16:56
until the game is over and then you wish you had an opera another opportunity to do it
17:02
and our Syracuse football analyst mat Mlodzinski joins us now mat, jacobi
17:06
morgan didn’t look that bad in my eyes what were your thoughts on the freshman’s first start?
17:12
yeah steve you know jacobi morgan is that like the stat line might not throw you away but he’s
17:16
an athletic guy who can really extend plays more than tommy devito or rex kolpat but
17:21
remember he’s just a freshman so while the stats may not look good if he can continue to trust his
17:26
arm because he does have a good arm and gain confidence then that’ll be big going forward
17:31
Syracuse heads into the bye week next game is a week from friday at louisville
17:35
what does coach babers need to focus on most during the bye week yeah well they have jv on
17:41
hawkins at running back so louisville has a tough running back that Syracuse will need to stop and
17:46
then malik cunningham is a dual threat quarterback so if Syracuse can play good on the defensive
17:51
front up front and make initial tackles that’ll be big and obviously that buy week will help as well
17:58
in an email to season ticket holders Syracuse university officials announced that they will
18:02
only be selling single game tickets for the upcoming men’s and women’s basketball seasons
18:07
fans are still not allowed to attend games due to the ongoing pandemic
18:10
but the university hopes they’ll be able to come to the dome at a later date
18:15
the 2020 2021 acc men’s basketball schedule was released yesterday let’s take a look at some
18:21
notable opponents non-conference schedule hasn’t been released yet but right now the first game is
18:26
at rutgers for the big ten acc challenge going into the acc schedule the orange have
18:31
notable home and homes with north carolina and louisville only one game each against virginia
18:37
and duke but both are on the road in addition one game against florida state and notre dame
18:42
both of those will be in the dome to check out the full schedule go to cues.com
18:48
the top point guard in the class of 2022 is decommitting from Syracuse dior johnson posted
18:54
on social media yesterday that he is reopening his commitment johnson thanks Syracuse for their
18:59
interest and is keeping the school as an option however some believe he won’t play in college at
19:04
all and join the g-league this will be the second time a Syracuse player has decommitted and joined
19:09
the g-league you remember darius baisley started this trend a couple of years ago
19:15
still to come here are mornings on the hill students across campus found new friends
19:20
and new ways to socialize and miss the pandemic stay with us that story and more just ahead
19:26
welcome back to mornings on hill coming back to your final weather forecast we just came off
19:31
such a beautiful weekend on the hill sierra how is that weather looking as we head into the weekend
19:36
as we head into the weekend hey mile you’re right it was such a nice weekend the past weekend and
19:41
this past two days have been so nice but today it is just raining and it’s coming down hard
19:46
um this weekend you’re going to see a saturday that’s going to be pretty clear but it’s going
19:49
to be a little bit colder definitely a day to get those errands in because on sun on sunday it is
19:53
going to be raining again so if I were you I would have that umbrella ready have those coats ready
19:58
for saturday when it’s a little bit chilly and looking to be another fall weekend in Syracuse
20:04
back to you the salvation army provides services for over 42 thousand people in Syracuse
20:11
and our Samantha Croston tells us how for one man the army provided more than just housing and food
20:16
they gave him a second chance at life i’m truly blessed that’s it i’m blessed it’s not
20:23
else I can put it I should have been I shouldn’t even be here right now
20:27
after serving eight years in prison Terrell Holmes was ready to turn his life around but
20:32
he needed help the salvation army staff has given Holmes the encouragement and community he needed
20:37
to get his life back on track I got support if I could come here to the salvation army red door
20:43
and they’re smiling and they’re happy to see me that support Tyrrell I need you to do this Terrell
20:48
you got to do this love if you don’t do this you ain’t gonna get this they’re my inspiration not
20:53
only does the salvation army surround homes with the right people they help him stay away from the
20:58
wrong ones he says the location of his new house gives him a better chance to stay out of trouble
21:03
and have a successful life they didn’t want to put me in the hood you know they wanted to put me
21:08
where to get my life together he was very adamant that you know he wanted to be
21:12
in an area that’s kind of away from you know all those old temptations and the people and
21:16
the crowds because he didn’t want to go back into all that Terrell isn’t only inspired by the family
21:23
that he’s built at the salvation army he also has one of his own that he uses as motivation
21:28
to be his best self my son I have an opportunity to be there for Tyrrell jr Tyrrell joseph Holmes
21:34
jr this weekend uh we’re going to put his mocha choke car together and tell scary stories yes
21:43
he’s probably the most valuable thing that’s going for me right now
21:48
the relationship has now come full circle holm says he helps the salvation army just as much
21:53
as the army has helped him and then I make them laugh too they told me one day they said you know
21:59
what we’d be having bad days too when you come and make us laugh that makes our mornings better too
22:05
being isolated in your room has been one of the most challenging parts of covet 19. our steven
22:10
shoemaker tells us how one four-legged friend has been one of the real saviors of the pandemic
22:22
one Syracuse university student recently became a dog owner because he knew the challenges that
22:26
came with being stuck inside before all this happened I went out a lot I saw a lot of people
22:33
like with Ella’s just it just helps with being alone another way Ella can help both her and
22:42
pierce’s physical health is by getting exercise through exploring the many trails central New
22:47
York has to offer if you’re from central New York and you often find yourself stuck indoors with you
22:53
and your dog one of the perfect solutions to be able to benefit both you and your dog’s physical
22:58
and mental health is by going out and completing the 80k 9 challenge all you have to do is go onto
23:04
their website and navigate to their registration page there you can fill out a form detailing your
23:09
dog’s information and all nine of the selected trails central New York has to offer the creator
23:15
of the adk-9 challenges says completing the trails in central new York provides a special bond and
23:20
appreciation for the outdoors between a dog and our owner so I kind of started this whole thing
23:27
um as kind of like a way to just get my mind out of just sitting home all day so to be able
23:34
to combine so many of my favorite things hiking dogs the outdoors into something beneficial for
23:42
dozens and dozens of people now it’s been really
23:45
rewarding the 80k9 challenge is one of the unique ways to help you and your dog
23:50
work through the difficult and isolated times of the coronavirus pandemic
23:58
certainly great to see so many dogs on campus these days it always puts a smile on my face
24:03
