Mornings on the Hill

Mornings on the Hill for November 18, 2020

This version of Mornings on the Hill is fully remote, but that didn’t get in the way of our commitment to covering campus news. Mornings on the Hill reporters have the latest on COVID with coverage of a news conference with the person in charge of the campus response, along with details on how our students are preparing to head home for the holidays.

good morning I’m Sarah Al-Shaikh thanks for joining us for mornings on the hill
00:04
as you can see we are bringing you this newscast remotely and I’m coming to you
00:08
from my south campus apartment in Syracuse new York,
00:12
I m Mat Mlodzinski also coming to you from Syracuse New
00:15
York in my apartment inside away from this wintry mix and
00:19
I m rob flaks
00:19
and we’re bringing you this special report live from Viewpoint
00:23
and last but not least from COVID 19 quarantine in my own apartment
00:26
I m ryan clark
00:41
our top story this morning is the spread of COVID 19
00:44
on campus while classes have been online since last Thursday the cases
00:49
continue to stay well above the 100 case threshold
00:52
J Michael Haynie and a message to campus addressed the status of those cases
00:56
yesterday well if you will a testing and surveillance bubble
01:01
on the campus of Syracuse university that that bubble burst
01:05
um you know about about eight or nine days ago
01:09
uh which you know is very clear from our numbers but
01:12
you know I i do want to make clear that it didn’t have to burst
01:17
it it burst because I think um the
01:23
the fatigue if you will that many of our many of our students and others have
01:28
experienced maybe came to a head over over the
01:33
Halloween weekend SU currently has 584 students in
01:38
quarantine with 266 active cases in New York
01:42
now the SU campus has had over 348 positive tests within the last 14 days
01:48
and that includes two staff members who also tested positive
01:52
now Haynie saying that many hundreds of students will be remaining on campus for
01:56
the thanksgiving break and students who do plan on leaving and
02:00
returning home must take a mandatory departure test
02:03
with a negative result before they’re allowed to leave and with
02:08
an astronomical 636 students currently
02:11
quarantining on campus
02:13
our fort hatchet takes a look at the different quarantining conditions
02:17
and the toll it’s taking on some students after a long grueling fall
02:21
semester that was impacted by a pandemic many SU students are ready to pack up
02:26
and head home for the holidays but with a record number of COVID
02:29
cases on campus that’s not an option for everyone
02:32
i kept saying mom I m gonna be eating cheerios on thanksgiving
02:36
in isolation and she said no you’re not no you’re not
02:40
and it looks like that is what i will be doing that’s junior Tim Kalinowski he’s
02:45
one of nearly 700 students currently quarantining on Syracuse’s campus
02:48
after coming in close contact with someone who tested positive Kalinowski
02:52
is serving his 14-day sentence in the Sheraton on university avenue but he
02:55
says it’s not your typical hotel stay I m like
02:57
i don’t really get to use the gym and go down to the pool and
03:01
you know I m not really like congregating in the lobby
03:04
and you know uh getting you know getting served you know my ties by the pool like
03:09
that’s not really what’s happening here Hannah Goldberg is quarantining on south
03:12
campus which mostly houses positive cases
03:15
she’s surprised by the lack of supervision so like we’ve literally been
03:18
hanging out because like anyone with COVID can hang out with each other and
03:21
like no one’s really checked on us which is
03:23
weird because you would think that sick kids would get checked on more but like
03:26
we’ve really just been doing our own thing like i could get in my car right
03:29
now and probably leave and no one would notice but no matter where students are
03:32
staying it’s hard not to feel like they’re missing out on things
03:35
you forget that the world is spinning outside you kind of it feels like your
03:39
life is on pause right now and that you that you know the
03:44
rest everything else is going on out there
03:46
and you don’t really know it for mornings on the hill
03:48
I m fort hatchet Syracuse men’s basketball head coach Jim Boeheim
03:53
announced on Sunday night that he tested positive for COVID 19.
03:57
Boeheim released a statement thanking everyone for the well wishes
04:01
the 76 year old tested positive following the basketball program’s most
04:05
recent round of testing and immediately began isolating at home
04:09
this pods and operations come less than two weeks before the team was expected
04:13
to start its 2020 season results are in from congressman Anthony Brindisi’s
04:18
broadband survey that began last winter the congressman says it revealed that
04:22
new York22 has the slowest internet in the entire state i think there’s got
04:27
to be greater oversight uh and where companies like we have seen
04:31
in this area we have seen some of the smaller providers expand
04:35
into the underserved markets uh so we really got to look at
04:38
who’s who’s willing to to take that risk to go into rural areas
04:43
and help those companies along more than 1 000 local residents responded to the
04:47
survey while over 120 000 took an internet
04:51
speed test the results show that 83 of those
04:54
involved were dissatisfied with their internet speed
04:56
while more than 50 percent even rated their internet as poor
05:00
or terrible but an expert in political polling at the SU school of political
05:05
science says that this survey should be called
05:07
into question I m not sure I believe it partially
05:11
because if you look at the survey results it’s an opt-in survey right so
05:15
people can choose to take it you see um if you get an email or see online
05:20
somewhere take this survey about um you know is your internet
05:23
access too slow take this survey who’s going to take that
05:26
people whose internet access is too slow despite the results of the survey
05:29
Brindisi might not even get a chance to change anything
05:33
early on in the election Claudia Tenney was the one that stormed out in front
05:37
leading an early and in-person voting now that absentee ballots are being
05:41
counted however Brindisi has come storming back now he
05:45
might have a chance to make internet access for all
05:47
in new York22 a real possibility and it’s a real possibility that Brindisi
05:52
wins that election too after election day the congressman
05:55
trailed by over 28 000 votes to Claudia tenney now
05:59
Brindisi trails by just five thousand votes with absentee
06:02
ballots still being counted and the seventh heaven rescue has been
06:06
experiencing an increase in adoption since the pandemic began
06:10
our Cyera Williams tells us how those adoptions can get tricky
06:14
when time at home may be limited seventh heaven rescue
06:18
experienced an increase due to people having more time
06:21
on their hands definitely had an increase in applications for dogs last
06:27
year she said we had
06:28
97 dogs adopted this year
06:32
the end of the third quarter we’re already at 204 dogs
06:35
and they expect 200 more to be adopted by the end of this year
06:39
but what does that mean for a pet in a pandemic the
06:42
the increase in applications everybody seems to say
06:47
oh I m home now or my kids are home now so
06:50
it’s a great time to get a dog which there is some truth to that
06:53
but what we’ve had to really have conversations about
06:57
is what is your home going to look like um when we get a handle on COVID
07:02
that handle on COVID may be going back to work and your free time now being
07:07
limited with the economy reopening slowly and
07:10
people returning back to in-person interaction your
07:13
pet who would be used to having new home will not be alone
07:19
you have to think about what time away can do to your new pet
07:24
how are you going to help your dog adjust to that again
07:28
so they don’t get separation anxiety that if you’ve been home
07:31
all the time with them and now you’re going to be gone for four hours or
07:35
five hours
07:36
you really need to start doing that ahead of time with
07:40
short amounts of time not just diving into I m there all day to
07:44
all of a sudden I m gone for five hours owners should make a plan that considers
07:48
the dog’s well-being after the pandemic adopting a dog is not
07:54
a short-term thing it’s it’s a commitment we hope for 12
07:58
to 15 years in fayetteville Cyera Williams
08:03
coming up here on mornings on the hill a look into a new club here on
08:07
campus to help make sure students don’t feel alone those temperatures are
08:12
dropping which means ski season is upon us but with Covid
08:16
it’s going to look a little bit different
08:18
at Greek Peak mountain resort here in New York reservations are required
08:23
masks must be worn when you are not skiing or riding
08:26
and no hanging out in the lodge however it’s not all bad news the marketing
08:31
director at Greek Peak believes that this is a great opportunity
08:35
for people to pick up the sport and get outdoors
08:39
so i think we’re going to see a lot of folks from down state
08:42
that want to come up and they still want to get away for a week
08:45
but it’s going to give them an opportunity to try the 50
08:49
ski areas that we have right near new york state you know there’s just a lot
08:52
of opportunity this winter for people to not
08:55
shut in uh you know there’s it’s proven that getting outside
09:00
even in the wintertime enjoying that that crisp
09:03
air um and just being outside is good for your health
09:09
most student clubs on campus had to adjust to cover 19 this semester but
09:13
one new club was actually created because of COVID 19.
09:17
a friendly face is a club specifically for making friends
09:20
during this pandemic the club meets every friday at 4 pm on zoom
09:24
where students play games to get to know each other Asha Duerdan is the SU student
09:30
who started the club and she says while it takes time to
09:33
build friendships the first step is being yourself
09:37
i would urge them to like go through with it and put themselves out there
09:43
because that’s how you get other people to feel confident
09:47
and comfortable and being themselves and it kind of grows from there
09:52
and now for more on holiday spending and all your money needs let’s head on over
09:56
to our own Joshua Miller from money with miller
10:01
with the pandemic that’s getting worse and the holiday is right around the
10:04
corner what’s the best way to save over the next few winter months
10:07
well first let’s set a budget it’s always important to have a budget
10:10
and to set a limit and understand that with the states heading into lockdowns
10:14
it’s important to put some money away into that emergency fund hopefully
10:17
unemployment does not increase over the next few months
10:19
but if that were the case you want to make sure that there’s no income coming
10:22
in you have enough money for a few rainy
10:24
days weeks and even months now for that holiday spending it’s
10:28
important to buy those loved ones and family members gifts
10:30
but how about doing it in a smart way that can include shopping online
10:34
finding those great deals online on amazon and shopping early
10:37
getting those holiday deals whether it’s black friday or cyber monday
10:41
and finally understanding that you may have to scale down with a pandemic
10:44
and the winter months coming ahead now a quick
10:47
look at the market over the past few days continuing on the uptrend some
10:50
stocks to look at the report this week are lows and target one stock to look at
10:54
in particular is home depot took a hit today after reporting its
10:57
quarter earnings but look to see it make a comeback
11:00
in the few coming weeks another quick reminder to keep an eye on those
11:03
stay-at-home stocks and those consumer stocks
11:07
and coming up next in sports we take a look at Syracuse’s upcoming match up
11:12
this week against louisville stick around and still come
11:16
how figure skating has brought a family closer together
11:33
good morning I m xavier brown with your orange sports update here on mornings on
11:37
the hill with the orange coming off a bye week
11:40
they get ready to travel down to louisville this weekend for a game with
11:43
an early season favorite to a team that’s a season turned into a
11:47
retreat Syracuse’s defense has played well
11:49
but the reoccurring issue has been Syracuse and Syracuse’s inability to put
11:53
points on the board Syracuse only scores about 18 points per
11:57
game which is below the acc average this season
12:00
the defense has forced some turnovers but still give up about 31 points per
12:05
even with the struggling louisville team this weekend will be a tough one
12:11
Syracuse will host its host its men’s basketball season opener when they face
12:15
off against bryant on friday november 27th in the carrier dome the
12:19
bulldog the bulldogs feature former liverpool high school standout charles
12:23
pride a Syracuse native and 2017 new york state champion
12:27
Syracuse was 18 and 14 and had won its first acc tournament game before culver
12:32
19 ended the college basketball season
12:34
Syracuse returns four out of five starters from last season
12:38
even though there will be a short pause to the start of the season due to a
12:41
positive test this will be coach jim Boeheim’s 45th
12:44
season as Syracuse’s head coach the 23rd ranked ladies orange first game
12:50
is the the 10th of december they prepare to
12:53
take on the unranked miami lady hurricanes
12:56
these ladies are confident after securing another top 15 recruiting class
13:01
Syracuse also has Kamilla cardoso who has yet to play our first minute for
13:05
Syracuse’s women’s basketball team however the six foot
13:08
seven and one of the 20 candidates for the 2021 lisa leslie award
13:12
watch list the annual award is is in its fourth year of recognizing the top
13:17
centers in women’s ncaa division 1 college basketball
13:21
the winner of this award will be presented next april of 2021
13:26
cardoso is a mcdonald’s high school all-american
13:29
out of hamilton heights christian academy in tennessee
13:32
she is the highest ranked recruit in program history
13:37
the 2020 college basketball season is just two weeks away
13:40
Syracuse basketball fans will have a roster mixed with new and fresh faces
13:44
but even though athletes only have four seasons on the hill
13:48
the program that coach jim Boeheim has built his players coming back for more
13:52
our mat Mlodzinski explains why Syracuse basketball
13:55
the Syracuse basketball program is unique in this way
13:59
you know demetrius nichols ryan blackwell
14:06
and matt roe for their time in Syracuse orange jerseys
14:10
but after they got done playing college hoops they all made the Syracuse area
14:14
their home for blackwell it’s the location i like
14:17
the small town feel and atmosphere it’s very easy
14:22
to get around it’s a great place like now when the
14:25
weather is really nice outside nichols calls it his home away from home
14:29
when you first was a freshman you by your senior year you’re almost a man
14:33
so this is a place where it’s like my second home where it’s
14:39
it has taught me to grow in a lot of ways on and off the basketball court
14:42
and rose saw it as a great place to raise a family this is really a safe
14:46
place to live it’s
14:50
great for kids growing up great school systems
14:54
in Syracuse onondaga county they all have different reasons for staying in
14:58
the Syracuse area but there is one common ground that the SU
15:02
basketball community
15:04
is a slam dunk this community really rallies around
15:07
the players they treat them with a lot of respect
15:10
they’re kind of like rock stars in this town blackwell says coach Jim Boeheim is
15:14
a main reason for that he’s created a great culture and create
15:18
helped create the community here and brought it to what it is not just
15:22
from basketball but he’s done such great things at the community that
15:26
you know it welcomes us it makes us feel like we want to come back
15:29
and because of that everlasting connection the players don’t want to
15:32
leave great place to raise your family
15:36
education wise it’s great i think i can see myself
15:40
being here until retirement it’s just no other place
15:43
that i’d rather be honestly people with heart conditions
15:47
do not usually pick up a profession that increases their heart rate but one
15:51
Syracuse fitness trainer decided to not listen to his doctors
15:55
our stephen shoemaker tells us how this one
15:57
man kept fighting and is motivating others to do the same
16:00
what is just another day for most is so much more than that for srdan lukach
16:05
it is another day to live srdan was born with a heart defect which makes
16:09
each day more cherishable than the next
16:11
he shows up to his job every day in order to inspire others
16:15
and to teach the youth about the importance of having a healthy heart
16:18
through physical activity growing up he struggled with obesity
16:22
and depression and used boxing and fitness as an escape
16:26
from his scars the non-profit organization was formed by surgeon
16:31
in order to help fight the risk factors for heart disease the reason i started
16:35
fight for hearts is uh because i’ve seen what fitness did for me
16:39
so even though i was a competitive athlete um
16:43
putting that aside just the workouts and being fit
16:47
i had a better quality of life in the times of COVID 19
16:51
one of the fitness trainers has been helping surgeon with making virtual
16:54
workout videos to inspire others to
16:56
stay active if it’s just
16:59
you know helping out one person you know that’s worth my time you know whether
17:02
even when we do the group you know fitness exercise maybe
17:05
I m not you know maybe not everyone is soaking it up but
17:09
it’s just one person for me one person is just enough you know
17:16
exercising and staying healthy are key elements to maintaining a healthy heart
17:20
all it takes is a little bit of dedication knowledge
17:24
and a little bit of added motivation all the way down let’s go let’s go
17:31
got it good work good form awesome job if surgeon was able to work out
17:35
and stay healthy through his heart deficiency then many should be
17:39
influenced and inspired to do the same at the lysander arena in
17:44
baldwinsville one family of figure skating sisters
17:47
says the sport has taught them more and how to be better to each other
17:51
mornings on the pill reporter sierra ryder has that story
17:58
figure skating has become the family sport for the scherflings
18:01
and it all started with a learned escape flyer in kindergarten
18:04
she got more and more into it joined the synchronized team got a private coach
18:08
and then her younger sister started right away from when they were like
18:11
three or four years old today all three of the scherfling sisters
18:14
skate each becoming interested in the sport from their older sister
18:18
i thought it was fun when they were doing it and then they looked cool doing
18:22
it so i wanted to
18:24
like i tried all the other sports like soccer and
18:28
horseback riding and stuff and i just always done this one so
18:31
the sisters skate five days a week working on different routines
18:35
landing jumps and trying to reach their goals but skating so close together
18:39
can put the sisters on thin ice when it comes to skills
18:43
it is hard i know my daughter mentioned that when one can do a jump ring
18:46
and then the other one doesn’t or if they just haven’t landed it yet and
18:49
somebody else does especially if they’re the younger one
18:51
it can cause a little stress instead of letting the competition
18:56
spiral out of control the girls make sure to break the ice
18:59
and support each other they do a lot of just watching it together
19:03
on tv they’ll do practice jumps they have little spinners at home
19:06
so they do they should come up with ideas for music
19:10
and all that stuff i like winning which is like
19:13
but like if she got first when i got second i wouldn’t be as like
19:16
dang it i didn’t get first because it’s still like her
19:20
so I m not really like rivals i wouldn’t be mad if she won but
19:24
even when the competition is fierce the sisters agree that the ice is more fun
19:28
together it’s good because if we have like
19:32
competitions away or like skate camps i always have like a friend there with
19:37
me like I m not alone
19:40
and that’ll do it for your morning sports thank you I m xavier brown
19:45
and the people who put our newscast together have a final farewell
19:49
stay with us and as we close out our final show of the semester we want to
19:54
give a special mention to the people
19:56
who make this show happen every week
19:58
i want to turn it over to our producing team the backbone of the show
20:03
hi guys i just want to say a huge thank you to every single person who was
20:08
involved with mornings on the hill this semester
20:10
it was obviously a semester like any other but i think overall
20:14
it taught us how to collaborate communicate
20:17
with one another it taught us patience in dealing with
20:20
how to create content how to organize a show in the middle of a pandemic
20:25
but everyone came in each week ready to work ready to take direction
20:29
ready to pitch ideas and the semester would not have happened had people not
20:34
come in with
20:34
a passion to make the show hit the air every wednesday at 10 a.m
20:40
so i just want to say thank you for the lessons that i learned
20:43
this semester and everyone that i met along the way
20:46
it was a great job and i look forward to more shows in the future
20:50
and for the viewers thank you for tuning in each week um thank you for
20:55
your patience through our early shows when we were still learning the ropes
20:58
and everything but i hope you enjoyed what
21:01
we put together for you and
21:03
we do it for you guys so thanks for tuning in
21:06
i want to thank my fellow producers for teaching me the ropes and
21:09
guiding me through some long nights and some very early mornings in the studio
21:13
you guys have made me re-fall in love with the art of journalism and
21:16
storytelling and to the rest of the talent that you
21:18
guys see every week on camera you guys have allowed me to become a
21:22
leader in the newsroom thank you for trusting me and putting your best foot
21:26
forward every week and to our amazing viewers hopefully we
21:29
will meet again next semester for more editions of mornings on the hill
21:34
it has been an unusual semester to say the least
21:37
and there have been a lot of bumps in the road but i am so proud of our
21:40
mornings on the whole team for all that they do first thank you to
21:44
all of our talent for providing amazing content every week
21:48
to our directors jill rox megan and amanda
21:52
for making sure everything ran smoothly to professor Kobland
21:56
thank you for always putting the students interest first and always
21:59
having our backs to my other fellow producers thank you
22:03
for putting up with me and guiding me through the ups and downs
22:07
and most importantly thank you to the viewers for tuning in
22:10
each week i hope that you enjoyed our show thank you thank you
22:15
thank you and we will see you all next semester for mornings on the hill
22:20
okay now it’s my turn to address all of you i just want to say that
22:24
first and foremost the semester has flown by for me it seems like just the
22:28
first day that we were out there in the tent together and uh and then putting
22:34
together dynamite shows um i want to say that
22:38
first and foremost to all of the reporters the anchors and the people who
22:43
were the content creators great job this semester you guys i know
22:47

22:51
of the show and other times not necessarily the case um but i want
22:55

23:23
the case that um you know what you folks have gone
23:26
through is far more challenging than what the class uh the classes that went
23:31
through 9 11 went through what classes had to go through during
23:35
wartime and protests and coming home from war and all the challenges
23:40
going through a pandemic i might suggest supersedes all of those so
