COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS LANDED IN ISRAEL THIS MORNING ADMIST ISRAEL-GAZA CONFLICT
ALSO, A POWERFUL TRIBUTE FOR REMEMBRANCE WEEK AS WE PAY TRIBUTE FOR THE LIVES LOST IN LOCKERBIE SCOTLAND.
PLUS FORMER SYRACUSE BASKETBALL PLAYER SHARES HIS PERSPECTIVE ON AN EVENT CLOSE TO HOME AND WHAT HE’S DOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY.
ALL THAT PLUS YOUR WEATHER AND ORANGE SPORTS COMING UP ON THIS EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL

GOOD MORNING. I’M PATRICIA DUONG, THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
AND I’M ANISA WILLIAMS. HERE’S A LOOK AT TODAY’S TOP STORY

OUR TOP STORY THIS HOUR THE GAZA CONFLICT CONTINUES. THE ONGOING BLOODSHED HAS COST MANY LIVES AND IS REVERBERATING AROUND THE WORLD. IT’S ALSO REVERBERATING HERE ON CAMPUS.
OUR EMILY COFFEY JOINS US LIVE WITH AN UPDATE, INCLUDING A PRAYER SERVICE SET FOR JUST A FEW HOURS FROM NOW. EMILY?

THE GAZA CONFLICT THAT BEGAN ON OCTOBER 7TH HAS QUICKLY BECOME THE DEVASTATING OF FIVE GAZA CONFLICTS FOR BOTH SIDES.

ACCORDING TO THE GAZA HEALTH MINISTRY TWO THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED-78 PALESTINIANS HAVE BEEN KILLED AND NINE THOUSAND 700 ARE WOUNDED.
ANOTHER ONE THOUSAND 200 PEOPLE ACROSS GAZA ARE BELIEVED TO BE BURIED UNDER THE RUBBLE AND ARE NOT YET DETERMINED ALIVE OR DEAD.
ACCORDING TO ISRAEL, MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND 400 ISRAELIS HAVE BEEN KILLED, AND AT LEAST ONE HUNDRED-99 OTHERS, INCLUDING CHILDREN, WERE CAPTURED BY HAMAS AND TAKEN INTO GAZA.
HERE IN SYRACUSE, WE ARE SEEING ITS EFFECTS ON BOTH SIDES.
THERE WAS A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL HELD OUTSIDE OF HENDRICKS CHAPEL ON THE SYRACUSE CAMPUS LAST WEEK TO HONOR THE JEWISH LIVES THAT HAVE BEEN LOST.
TONIGHT, THERE WILL BE A GATHERING HELD BY THE MUSLIM STUDENT ASSOCIATION CALLED PRAYERS FOR PEACE HELD AT HENDRIKS CHAPEL FROM EIGHT TO EIGHT 30.

SECRETARY OF STATE ANTHONY BLINKEN ANNOUNCED THAT JOE BIDEN WILL BE ARRIVING IN ISRAEL LATER TODAY.
HE IS ALSO EXPECTED TO MEET AUTHORITIES IN JORDAN AND EGYPT.
REPORTING LIVE, I’M EMILY COFFEY FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
BACK TO YOU GUYS.

AS FOR THE LATEST FROM THE MIDDLE EAST, A MASSIVE AIRSTRIKE SHOCKED A GAZA HOSPITAL TUESDAY WHERE WOUNDED AND OTHER PALESTINIANS WERE SEEKING SHELTER. ALMOST 500 PEOPLE WERE KILLED.
RAGE HAS SPREAD THROUGH THE MIDDLE EAST. ISRAEL HAS BLAMED THE AIRSTRIKE ON A PALESTINIAN ROCKET MISFIRE AND THE HAMAS MILITANT GROUP BLAMED THE BOMBING ON AN IS-RAE-LI AIRSTRIKE. GAZA DOCTORS ARE STRUGGLING TO AID SURVIVORS AS THEY ARE RUNNING OUT OF RESOURCES.

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN VOWED TO SHOW THAT THE U.S STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH ISRAEL. HE LANDED IN ISRAEL THIS MORNING.
THE ARAB GOVERNMENTS PLANNED TO HOLD A SUMMIT WITH PRESIDENT BIDEN TO RESOLVE THE ONGOING GAZA-ISRAELI CONFLICT, HOWEVER IT WAS LATER CANCELLED.

MONDAY MARKED THE BEGINNING OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE WEEK – OUR JONAH WEINTRAUB IS LIVE ON CAMPUS WITH MORE.

JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO, S-U’S REMEMBRANCE WEEK CONTINUED AS LOCKERBIE SCHOLARS SAT IN SOLIDARITY TO HONOR THE VICTIMS OF THE 1988 PAN-AM FLIGHT 103 BOMBING.

THE TRAGEDY CLAIMED THE LIVES OF 270 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 35 SYRACUSE STUDENTS… AND SINCE 2023 MARKS THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING – ONE YEAR FOR EACH S-U VICTIM – THIS REMEMBRANCE WEEK CARRIES EVEN MORE WEIGHT.
YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY SEEN EMPTY SEATS ON THE QUAD OR WINDOW PAINTINGS IN SCHINE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THOSE SYRACUSE STUDENTS… BUT THAT’S JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.
AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, THERE ARE PLENTY OF EVENTS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. TONIGHT AT 7, THERE’S A SCREENING OF THE DOCUMENTARY “SEAT 20D” FOLLOWED BY A Q-AND-A WITH THE DIRECTOR. THEN TOMORROW AT 8, ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND “CELEBRATION OF LIFE”: AN EVENING OF ART TO HONOR THE VICTIMS OF FLIGHT 103.
REMEMBRANCE WEEK CULMINATES ON FRIDAY WITH THE ANNUAL ROSE-LAYING CEREMONY AT THE REMEMBRANCE WALL… RIGHT AFTER THIS CONCLUDES, THERE WILL BE A CONVOCATION FOR YEAR’S REMEMBRANCE SCHOLARS.
NOT TO MENTION. FROM 9-5 ON WEEKDAYS THE ENTIRE SEMESTER, BIRD LIBRARY HAS OPENED THE “IN PURSUIT OF JUSTICE” EXHIBITION – WHICH FEATURES 3 DECADES WORTH OF ARCHIVES FROM THE DISASTER.

FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THIS WEEK’S EVENTS, VISIT REMEMBRANCE.SYR.EDU. REPORTING LIVE FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M JONAH WEINTRAUB.

BREAST CANCER PATIENTS IN CENTRAL NEW YORK CAN RECEIVE FINANCIAL HELP WITH MEDICAL AND NON-MEDICAL BILLS.
OUR WHITNEY WILLIAMS TELLS US HOW SAINT AGATHA FOUNDATION HAS ASSISTED THOUSANDS OF DIAGNOSED WOMEN IN THEIR FIGHTS AGAINST BREAST CANCER.

YES PATRICIA
ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE, BREAST CANCER TREATMENT CAN RANGE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 THOUSAND TO 200 THOUSAND DOLLARS, DEPENDING ON A PATIENT’S STAGE OF BREAST CANCER.
PRESIDENT OF SAINT AGATHA FOUNDATION KATHY MEZZALINGUA SAYS THE ORGANIZATION’S AIM IS TO ELIMINATE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN OF BREAST CANCER SO THAT PATIENTS CAN FOCUS ON THEIR HEALING.

MEZZALINGUA SAYS PATIENTS IN NEED USUALLY NOTIFY THE HOSPITAL OR DOCTOR’S OFFICE AT WHICH THEY ARE DIAGNOSED.
PATIENTS ARE THEN REFERRED TO CANCER CONNECTS, THE PRIME ORGANIZATION THAT DISTRIBUTES THE FUNDS FROM SAINT AGATHA FOUNDATION.
SHE SAYS PATIENTS FROM ANY ECONOMIC BRACKET OR INSURANCE STATUS CAN RECEIVE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.
BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR PAMELA BULLOCK WAS DIAGNOSED NINE YEARS AGO DURING OCTOBER, BREAST CANACER AWARENESS MONTH.
SHE SAYS SHE RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM SAINT AGATHA FOUNDATION TO COVER HER SIX WEEK TREATMENT

MEZZALINGUA SAYS SAINT AGATHA FOUNDATION HAS GIVEN AWAY OVER 17 MILLION DOLLARS LOCALLY TO BREAST CANCER PATIENTS.
SHE ENCOURAGES PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES TO REACH OUT FOR HELP.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M WHITNEY WILLIAMS.

IN THE FIRST ROUND OF VOTING ON TUESDAY.
REPUBLICAN JIM JORDAN FAILED TO SECURE THE SUPPORT NEEDED TO BECOME HOUSE SPEAKER.
THE DEMOCRATS NOMINATED MINORITY LEADER, HAKEEM JEFFRIES. THE NEXT VOTE IS SET TO TAKE PLACE THIS MORNING.

LET’S GET A QUICK LOOK OF WHAT THE WEATHER IS DOING TODAY.
BAILEE TUCKER IS HERE TO TELL US ALL ABOUT IT.
BAILEE

THANKS ANISA.
I AM SO HAPPY TO REPORT THAT IT’S FINALLY STARTING TO FEEL LIKE FALL HERE IN SYRACUSE!
RIGHT NOW WE’RE SITTING IN THE LOW 50s, BUT THAT SHOULD GO UP AS THE DAY GOES ON.
GOOD NEWS IS THE WIND WON’T PLAY A HUGE FACTOR INTO TODAY’S FORECAST.
YOU CAN SEE WE’RE ONLY SEEING 5 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS AND THAT IS NOT LIKELY TO CHANGE AS THE DAY GOES BY.
I WOULD ADVISE BRINGING A JACKET WHEREVER YOU GO TODAY, AND MAYBE SOME SHADES AS WELL.
I’LL CATCH UP WITH YOU ALL LATER, BUT FOR NOW BACK TO OUR LOVELY ANCHORS

COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL —
A FORMER SYRACUSE BASKETBALL PLAYER IS NOW USING HIS TALENTS FOR A GREATER GOOD.
AND THE FULL SCOOP OF CENTRAL NEW YORK’S COLD WEATHER THIS WEEK
STAY TUNED FOR MORE FROM MORNINGS ON THE HILL.

TIME TO CHECK YOUR WEATHER FOR TODAY.
BAILEE TUCKER IS IN STUDIO WITH A LOOK AT YOUR FULL WEATHER FORECAST.
BAILEE.

DO NOT REARRANGE THE CODING — PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE EDITING ANYTHING WITHIN THE GRAPHICS!
IT’S STILL A LITTLE CHILLY OUT THERE AT 51 DEGREES.
HOODIE WEATHER IS OFFICIALLY HERE IN SYRACUSE, AND THE PEOPLE LOVE TO SEE IT.
TOMORROW WILL PROVE TO BE A TAD WARMER.
WE WILL SEE THE TEMPERATURES GET ALL THE WAY UP TO 65 IN THE AFTERNOON.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE CAN’T WIN IT ALL THOUGH AND IT’S STILL GOING TO BE A LITTLE CLOUDY OUT THERE.
PUT THE SUNGLASSES AWAY, BECAUSE IT’S NOT A LOOK ANYMORE.
BY NIGHTFALL, IT’S GONNA PLUMMET BACK DOWN INTO THE HIGH 50s.
I WOULD ADVISE SOME FLANNEL SHEETS IF THAT’S YOUR VIBE.
LOOKING INTO THE WEEKEND, IT’S GOING TO BE RAINING WATER AND NOT MEN SO PLEASE, DON’T LEAVE YOUR UMBRELLAS AT HOME.
THIS IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO CURL UP AND WATCH YOUR FAVORITE HALLOWEEN MOVIES.
TEMPERATURES WON’T BE COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW, BUT I’D STILL BUNDLE UP.
MONDAY THE RAIN APPEARS TO HAVE GONE AWAY, BUT THE TEMPERATURES ARE STILL PRETTY CHILLY.
IF YOU TALK TO YOUR MOM THIS WEEKEND, SHE’S GOING TO INSIST YOU WEAR A JACKET SO PLEASE JUST DO IT.
LADIES, BACK TO YOU.

FORMER SYRACUSE BASKETBALL PLAYER, JOHN BOL AJAK CONTINUES TO USE HIS PLATFORM TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.
OUR KALIA BUTLER JOINS US LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM TO TELL US MORE.

FORMER SYRACUSE BASKETBALL PLAYER, BOL AJAK, WHO HAD TWO YEARS LEFT OF ELIGIBILITY LEFT WITH THE ORANGE DECIDED TO STEP AWAY FROM THE SPORT AND PURSUE HIS TRUE PASSION OF HELPING OTHERS, DOING SO HERE, IN THE CITY OF SYRACUSE. JUST WEEKS AGO COMBINING TRAGEDY AND CHARITY, BY BRINGING THE SIBLINGS OF THE TWO YOUNG BOYS, 17-YEAR-OLD, DHAL APET AND 15-YEAR-OLD, LUETH MO WHO WERE SHOT AND KILLED BY AN ONADAGA COUNTY DEPUTY IN A CAR THEY HAD STOLE EARLY LAST MONTH. KNOWING WHAT ITS LIKE TO LOSE A LOVED ONE, AJAK SAYS HE WANTED TO GIVE THE FAMILY A GLIMPSE OF HAPPINESS.

AJAK AND THE FAMILIES INVOLVED IN THE TRAGEDY ARE ALL REFUGEES FROM SOUTH SUDAN, MAKING THE CASE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR HIM.

AJAK SAYS HE PLANS TO CONTINUE HIS COMMUNITY OUTREACH THROUGH HIS NONPROFIT, THE HUMBOL FUND, WHICH HE SAYS HE CREATED TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY.

PETE CURKENDALL HAS WORN A LOT OF HATS IN HIS LIFETIME.
FROM FOOTBALL ALL-AMERICAN, PENN STATE NATIONAL CHAMPION, A NFL PLAYER AND NOW HIS TWO MOST IMPORTANT HATS OF ALL.
BEING A FATHER AND PSYCHOLOGIST TO HELP OTHERS.

PETE CURKENDALL FIRST STARTED CATCHING PEOPLE’S EYES WHEN HE WAS NAMED THE NEW YORK STATE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.
THE AWARDS DID NOT STOP THERE AS PETE PLAYED AT PENN STATE WHERE IN HIS SENIOR YEAR WAS NAMED THIRD-TEAM ALL-AMERICAN AND HELPED THE NITTANY LIONS WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
CURKENDALL WAS DRAFTED BY THE BUFFALO BILLS IN THE 1988 DRAFT WHO THEN WENT TO THE SAINTS A YEAR LATER BUT HE ENDED UP WALKING AWAY AWAY FROM FOOTBALL FEELING LOST.
UNTIL HE MET HIS WIFE, RENEE WHO ENCOURAGED HIM TO GO A SPECIAL NEEDS SUMMER CAMP.
FROM THAT MOMENT ON PETE’S LIFE CHANGED AS HE NOW HAS A FAMILY OFF SIX, SOME THROUGH BIRTH OTHERS THROUGH ADOPTION BUT THEY ARE HIS CHILDREN.
WHEN HE’S NOT IN FULL DAD MODE HE HAS HIS OWN CLINIC WHERE HE IS A LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH COUNSEL AND LIFE COACH.

CURKENDALL TELLS ME HOW HE NOW STRIVES TO BE THE PERSON HE NEEDED WHEN HE WAS PLAYING SPORTS.
