In this episode, Morning on the Hill reporters cover the latest with COVID on campus and a first, as Syracuse University bestows its first honorary undergraduate degree to Kevin Richardson from the Exonerated 5.

19 cases drop on SU campus we have your latest COVID 19 update the first honorary undergraduate
00:07
degree in su history is announced find out who’s receiving it an SU alum makes history
00:13
with a million dollar deal on shark tank all that plus your
00:16
weather and orange sports coming up on this edition of mornings on the hill good morning
00:37
I m Sarah Al-Shaikh
00:39
and I m Mat Mlodzinski thanks for joining us for mornings on the hill let’s get right
00:42
to our top story our josh miller joins us live outside the dome as covet 19 testing
00:51
continues josh thanks Sarah university officials say that
00:59
the pin the occurrence that occurred last week a few weeks ago due to an off-campus
01:03
gathering is now under control testing can be done here behind me in the carrier dome
01:08
as it is part of phase three of the university’s plan for covet 19.
01:12
Nearly 70 000 tests have been administered this year and a big help to that has been
01:17
this third phase behind me at the carrier dome in an effort to generate more tests more
01:21
efficiently there are still a couple days left to go get tested and the schedule is
01:26
as follows today and tomorrow for juniors through graduate students Friday for undergraduate
01:30
students with a couple makeup days spread out throughout the week it is required by
01:34
all students to get a COVID 19 tested as well as now a mandatory flu shot faculty are not
01:40
required but recommended to get tested the university has seen a positive response from
01:45
students and faculty thus far and hopes to see the same in their next
01:49
phase back to you guys it’s mental health awareness month
01:53
Samantha Croston tells us how you can use the outdoors to boost your mental health
01:58
this October many businesses have crumbled during the pandemic but the outdoor recreational
02:05
industry is thriving these fall friendly places provide a safe way to have fun which improves
02:11
mental health pumpkin hollow business owner Louise cox explains why her pumpkin patch
02:16
is bringing in more customers than previous years
02:18
what I hear from the parents that are coming is their kids need to get outside and they
02:24
need to run, and they need to laugh mental health counselor maria Randazzo says people
02:30
are experiencing zoom fatigue from all the hours they spend looking
02:33
at a screen taking an outdoor break gives people an opportunity to reset but the part
02:38
of it is just getting out of the environment that’s triggering you know we’re all inside
02:44
that’s triggering us if we get anxious we’re inside if you go outside you automatically
02:49
help to break that cycle of anxiety going a pumpkin hollow is more than just fun research
02:55
shows that 120 minutes spent in nature each week can reduce stress and improve overall
03:00
mood that means a trip to the hollow really can make you go from this to this whether
03:06
it is because of the sights and smells that fresh air can be really really refreshing
03:10
and being outside I know it’s not sunny but you know it’s brighter it’s natural
03:14
light or the much needed break from virtual learning we’ve been cooped up a lot with you
03:19
know home learning and everything so it’s definitely better to be outside doing something
03:24
and being active the common denominator for improved mental health is spending time outdoors
03:29
like being outside and coming here as the cold season comes
03:37
Syracuse ramps up on flu vaccines and COVID testing Cyera Williams tells us how this plan
03:42
includes students but there’s a gray area for faculty members yes that is correct there
03:48
is some uncertainty among faculty and staff members getting tested and getting their flu
03:54
vaccination this is the third round of mandated testing for Syracuse students but faculty
04:00
and staff are not mandated to get tested or their flu shots professor Randall wenner tells
04:06
us why the university may take precautions if the university has to be careful how many
04:11
things especially health factors it forces people to take can you force employees to
04:16
get for example the flu shot can you force them to get coveted where does it stop then
04:21
can you force them to take whatever medications or vaccines you determine are needed before
04:27
employees can come onto campus they are required to fill out a daily health screening form
04:32
but the option to get tested is up to the faculty the university I think has all along
04:39
suggested strongly that it would be a good idea for faculty and staff to get tested if
04:47
possible though for most of this semester it really wasn’t mandated there was nobody
04:53
was forcing me to get a test now for the entire semester only six faculty and staff members
05:10
tested positive the university says that you do not have to
05:14
get a flu vaccination if you have medical or religious documentation in Syracuse Cyera
05:19
Williams mornings on the hill
05:22
former us attorney general Loretta lynch held a town hall on Monday as her team continues
05:27
its review of the department of public safety get a couple of shots of the car and then
05:33
I ll then I ll have you initial proposal for public safety community review board it’s
05:39
a process that everyone can get involved with really do want to hear from the Syracuse community
05:47
about the best way to select individuals from the respective groups that we’ve identified
05:53
we’ve identified undergraduate students and graduate students
05:56
faculty members staff and administrators lynch is scheduled to hold another town hall this
06:04
afternoon at 4 15 and one more tomorrow night at 7 15.
06:09
well Kevin Richardson of the central park five stated his ambition to attend Syracuse
06:13
university along with making contributions to the broader society and now Richardson
06:18
will soon have an honorary degree mornings on the hill reporter Xavier brown joins us
06:23
live with more
06:28
chancellor Kent Syverud chancellor Kent Syverud announced Friday last Friday evening that
06:33
he would be that Kevin Richardson a member of the central
06:35
park five would be receiving the first honorary undergraduate degree here at Syracuse university
06:41
it is my distinct honor to congratulate Kevin Richardson
06:45
as the recipient of an honorary undergraduate degree the bachelor of fine arts in music
06:52
of this honorary degree I warmly welcome you to the orange family where your example inspires
06:59
us all I look forward to seeing you on this campus to celebrate with you in person I can’t
07:05
wait to see what you will do next as a member of the orange family Kevin Richardson visited
07:11
Syracuse university for the first time and was honored with the creation of our time
07:16
has come Kevin Richardson scholarship which is awarded with a preference for supporting
07:21
black and Hispanic students with unmet financial need this means the world to me from all the
07:27
trials and tribulations I ve been through and to literally be here to accept this and
07:34
to be recognized it’s the greatest honor it’s so surreal the honorary bachelor’s degree
07:42
in fine arts and music will be formally given to Kevin Richardson during the spring commencement
07:48
ceremony
07:50
coming up on mornings on the hill find out how one SU senior is turning a personal health
07:59
crisis into a way to make a difference weather forecast
08:05
stay with us here on OTN
08:11
time to check your weather for today our weather reporter Maya Lockett is live out on university
08:16
avenue to tell us what to expect how’s it looking maya?
08:20
good morning Syracuse it is currently 56 degrees with cloudy skies unfortunately you will need
08:27
to pull out that umbrella because it’s going to be drippy
08:29
for the rest of the day now let’s look at tomorrow’s forecast it looks like we will
08:35
have another chance to enjoy some warmer weather here in Syracuse
08:38
tomorrow is going to be 75 degrees with partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain but the
08:43
temperature will drop to 48 degrees in the evening now let’s take a look at that five
08:47
day forecast this week this week our weather will be all over the place with 75 degree
08:55
weather on Friday which gives you another chance to enjoy a nice day out at the pumpkin
08:59
patch but Saturday you will want to stay inside because it’s going to be 56 degrees with a
09:04
60 chance of rain and on Sunday the cold weather will continue with 51 degrees on
09:08
Sunday but even with bad weather I hope you guys are still participating in those food
09:15
pantries across Syracuse and on campus
09:17
I have the chance to visit a food pantry in downtown Syracuse yesterday just like some
09:23
soft little rock rolls perfect hey have a nice day assumption church food pantry has
09:31
been donating food and toiletries to Syracuse families for many years we give out three
09:38
days worth of food which is nine meals per day for each family member three okay but
09:46
in order to follow social distancing guidelines one main factor at a Simpson church has changed
09:52
sometimes it’s hard right now that they can’t pick things out because um a lot of people
09:56
are feeling that struggle if you’re giving me things that I don’t want or won’t use whereas
09:59
if they were able to come in and walk around they would be able to pick exactly what they
10:03
wanted before the pandemic families were able to come inside the food pantry grab a basket
10:07
like this and pick out different kind of foods and toiletries but now because of the pandemic
10:12
families must wait outside for their food in order to follow social distancing guidelines
10:17
but one of the main things that shocked the food pantry the most was the amount of people
10:20
that would show up every day actually because of all the stimulus available there’s less
10:27
and less people coming to the food pantry I mean it is sad when we have these moments
10:31
where we have so much food because we people are giving even more than before so we’re
10:36
being given so much food that then it’s hard to get it out the door come daily for this
10:46
for the food pantry about 25 families on a good day um 10 and
10:55
sometimes five I think one that when the other resources start to dry up which is at the
11:04
end of this month then folks are going to be coming back again but for some families
11:08
the food pantry was their only option the restaurant they used to work at uh I didn’t
11:12
work there for more than six months so I get no unemployment from that job so I get you
11:17
know on appointment checks and without the food pantry I would go without
11:25
food
11:26
one Syracuse senior spent the summer dealing not just with the pandemic but a cancer battle
11:31
as well our ford hatchet tells us how after kicking cancer the student is now trying to
11:37
give back in early April Sean misik was still trying to adjust to online classes until a
11:42
persistent stomach pain led him to the doctor’s office and I ended up having a ultrasound
11:49
and an examination that for the reveal they had a tumor
11:53
and so then from there I had to have surgery within a week diagnosed with testicular cancer
11:58
misik had surgery and underwent chemotherapy treatments at Roswell park cancer center in
12:03
buffalo but due to the pandemic his family wasn’t allowed to stay with him but support
12:07
for Sean still flowed in from family friends and even some celebrities yo yo what’s up
12:12
what’s your boy Juicy J wanna say what’s up the shine in sick hey Sean this is buddy here
12:16
I just wanted to reach out and say I hope you’re recovering well it sounds cliche
12:21
to say but when people are going through it you don’t fight alone but it really is true
12:24
like the support that you get from people lifts you up and now miesic wants to turn
12:29
that support into action so I have these bracelets that uh they’re just a purple bracelet for
12:34
testicular cancer awareness which the theme color is purple and it has the purple ribbon
12:38
he’s selling the bracelets for five dollars apiece and hopes to give back to the hospital
12:42
that helped save his life so I want to take the Syracuse community and the medical community
12:47
that helped me out so much in this time and bring them together and raise money by selling
12:50
these bracelets taking the profits and donating them to Roswell park anyone interested in
12:55
buying a bracelet or donating can contact music through social media or by email at
13:00
seanmesic11 gmail.com for mornings on the hill I m fort hatchet
13:06
well as you all know it is the fall season and the leaves have the beautiful golds and
13:10
reds our sierra Ryder is live to tell us about a fun arts and crafts project put on by the
13:15
su art museum involving those leaves sierra hi Sarah well if you need a fall activity
13:25
and you need something to do with all those fall
13:26
leaves on the ground I have the perfect fall arts and crafts activity for you the SU art
13:34
museum hosted an art workshop along with the help of the education director at the joseph
13:39
and Annie albers foundation the idea was to create leaf creatures something
13:44
that the famous artist joseph albers did when he first moved to the united states albers
13:49
taught at black mountain college where he was the head of the painting
13:52
program and then he realized that the leaves around him in north Carolina and the mountains
13:59
were turning these amazing colors and so they leave so the students went out and gathered
14:02
leaves and they started making these studies that were related to their color studies in
14:08
class this fall activity is perfect for families and adults, it’s a nice way to
14:13
get your hands off a computer and onto creating something
14:15
original with fall foliage we all spend a lot of time looking at computer screens right
14:19
now and so anything that gets us away from the computer screen
14:22
can be good to make a leaf creation you gather around
14:27
20 leaves some construction paper glue and you just start to be creative there are so
14:33
many ways to be creative with these fall leaves workshop was tons of fun for me and it was
14:38
great to see so many kids and adults showing up to do these really creative things and
14:48
there were surprise every single person who shared hair shared something that was surprising
14:52
and wonderful if you are interested in doing an art workshop
14:56
or two the Alberts foundation has a series of other online workshops found on their website
15:01
as well as the SU art museum now I know that you guys are dying to see what I came up with
15:10
so I brought them here’s my turkey family that I made and here is the pig that I made
15:16
out of these leaves now I m no artist but I
15:18
have to say it was a nice escape from work and school, so I highly recommend reporting
15:23
live sierra Ryder mornings on the hill
15:26
we love the leaf bar sierra coming up on mornings on the hill Syracuse football suffered another
15:31
crushing defeat on Saturday but it’s not going to get easier find out why when we come back
15:43
good morning I m James Corrigan and this is your orange sports update on mornings on the
15:47
hill when it was announced three years ago that the orange would be playing the brand
15:51
new FBS program liberty flames three years in a row fans naturally chalked it up as three
15:56
easy wins but as they say the best laid plans often go awry and it was the four-and-oh flames
16:02
that gashed the orange for 338 yards on the ground
16:06
and had Dino Babers perhaps his most humiliating defeat as head coach it was hard enough as
16:10
it was going into the year with numerous opt-outs but things have gone from bad to worse after
16:15
the injury bug turned into the injury monster quarterback rex Culpepper is set to make his
16:20
second start of the season for the injured tommy DeVito Saturday against Clemson and
16:24
defensively true freshman and walk-ons litter the depth chart in fact half the available
16:29
players for the orange as a whole are freshmen but dino babers is not worried as much about
16:33
results on the field as he is getting his young guys better the biggest thing is to
16:38
make sure they’re still improving okay we want to make sure that some of these young
16:42
people that they don’t look the same as they did the first week or the second week there’s
16:46
got to be signs of improvement and that’s what we’re looking for in the football staff
16:50
and that’s what we’re looking for in the family
16:53
young irons will have to grow up three times over this week if they want to avoid embarrassment
16:56
against the top-ranked Clemson tigers Trevor Lawrence and company are coming off of a resounding
17:01
73-7 win over Georgia tech and Vegas isn’t exactly selling high on SU the orange come
17:07
in as 45 and a half point underdogs but coach babers says it’s a privilege
17:12
just to share the field you get an opportunity to play the
17:15
number one ranked team in the country you know whether you’re injured free or not whether
17:22
you’re playing with all seniors or all freshmen you get an opportunity to compete now while
17:32
calling these keys to victory may be a stretch there are still ways for the young orange
17:36
to take positives from what will likely be a tough afternoon in death valley forcing
17:41
turnovers has been a strength for Syracuse this year the orange lead the nation in turnover
17:45
margin at plus 11 they have to take it away from Trevor Lawrence who’s thrown just one
17:49
interception in his last 13 games on the ground freshman Sean tucker has been a bright spot
17:54
he’s run for over a hundred yards two times this week including last week against liberty
17:59
and the young guys like tucker will have a great opportunity to gain valuable experience
18:03
in the Clemson game which could play dividends down the road and above all else the orange
18:08
need to keep their heads up as coach babers said in his press conference focus more on
18:12
improvement rather than the result and it’s worth mentioning that Syracuse
18:15
is the last team to beat Clemson at home during the regular season the countdown to Syracuse
18:21
basketball is on the men’s and women’s team each began practice last week as both squads
18:26
prepare for a late November start of the season
18:29
our own mat Mlodzinski has more
18:30
has changed the basketball schedule a few times already but with practices now the November
18:39
25th start date seems like a full go neither team
18:41
has an official schedule but the acc is leaning on a 20-game conference schedule with a recommendation
18:47
of at least four non-conference games the uncertainty of the exact schedule looms but
18:52
one thing is for certain orange basketball season is here
18:58
now for an inside look into the women’s soccer roster goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx is one of
19:04
the best in the acc our steven shoemaker has more starting goalkeeper
19:11
Lysianne Proulx coming from Montreal Quebec has been nothing short of sensational during
19:16
her senior year for the orange pool is second in the acc in total saves this year with 47
19:21
through the first five games and holds the top spot in saves per game averaging
19:25
just under 10.
19:27
number 22 has started every game between the pipes over the last two seasons but Proulx
19:31
says there’s always room for improvement but regardless um yeah I think it’s just about
19:38
just putting in the work and see it all come together and seeing the improvement from like
19:43
game to game uh like fixing some mistakes that I did before
19:47
and that I didn’t do this time because we practiced it the orange are improving and
19:53
getting better every game and Lysianne believes the team’s first win is right around the corner
19:58
going against Boston college I believe is a team that we can beat we have very talented
20:04
individuals in the team and I think it’s a team that we can beat and now how can we all
20:11
come together and make the small things work so that at the end it all works out on the
20:18
bigger picture
20:21
and you could catch Lysianne Proulx in action tomorrow night at 7 pm as the women’s soccer
20:25
team take on Boston college at home the team’s looking for its first win and its first goal
20:30
of the season they are currently 0 and 5. after the football game Saturday men’s soccer
20:35
kicks off at Virginia at 6 p.m. they’re also chasing their first win of the year with a
20:39
record of 0-2 and 1.
20:41
field hockey is off this week and next Friday cross country laces up their sneakers for
20:45
the first meet of the season that’ll do it for sports this morning on mornings on the
20:50
hill matt back to you
20:51
thanks, James still to come here on mornings on the hill a former SU alum makes history
20:58
with the investors in the shark tank stay with us that story and more just ahead
21:13
student activities are back in full swing when just a week ago they were temporarily
21:18
on hold to prevent the spread of COVID 19.
21:21
weekly changes like that are keeping one su group on their toes but they’re moving and
21:26
grooving with all the twists and turns from the dance studio to the computer screen and
21:32
now back into the dance studio otto’s empire belly dancing
21:36
troupe is just one of the su student groups adjusting to the
21:40
ever-changing copied-19 rules on campus but one of the belly dancers says regardless if
21:46
they’re in the room or on studio students activities like theirs are needed during these
21:52
stressful times we’d always say like oh it’s a great chance to like just dance and like
21:58
release some emotions like de-stress release those endorphins and I think that’s now more
22:05
important than it ever was now
22:08
Syracuse based startup struck gold this weekend and even caught the eyes of business tycoons
22:14
mark Cuban and Lori grinner our reporter Ryan Clark has the details a local Syracuse company
22:24
hit it big this weekend I think the best way to do this is to let them make us an offer
22:31
and we either say yes or no they received over 1 million on shark tank one of the top
22:34
10 largest deals in show history the company spark charge created a triple a like solution
22:41
for when electric cars run out of battery it started in Syracuse where the students
22:47
involved donated charging stations to help bring attention to cleaner energy we’re hoping
22:54
that these charging stations being installed here at Syracuse university will kind of spark
22:58
the growth of electric vehicles on campus and electric vehicle
23:01
adoption here at Syracuse university I m really happy that the university took our donation
23:10
of the charging stations it’s really nice to drive by and kind of see the light blinking
23:14
letting me know that they’re being used both other members Chris Ellis and Richard Whitney
23:18
both got their start at the school right behind me right here Onondaga county community college
23:25
spark charge says their goal is to take their shark tank winnings and make other cities
23:30
as accessible for sustainable energy as Syracuse for ncc news I m Ryan Clark
23:37
finally this morning we’re taking a look at what is happening this weekend on the hill
23:43
if you don’t have any plans yet we’re here to tell you what’s happening on the hill it
23:48
will certainly be a few full days full of campus activities on Friday it’s time to unwind
23:54
after you finish a long week of classes the center for
23:57
international services is hosting mix it up happening in person at the slouch care center
24:03
this will be a very interactive and engaging activity discussing inclusion and diversity
24:08
on campus and if you are looking to cool down after Friday s heat wave you can head over
24:12
to the pavilion for glow skate now on Saturday you can get your cardio in by going on a hike
24:18
to the beautiful beaver lake state park or you can hop on the campus shuttle to destiny
24:24
at night you can relax after a long day by joining orange after dark for their first
24:29
ever drive-in movie and on Sunday if you are not doing homework or enjoying football Sunday
24:34
like me you can go on another hike but this time to
24:38
green lakes state park matt what did you think about this weekend’s su football game yeah,
24:44
I mean obviously with Syracuse playing the number one team
24:47
Clemson on Saturday I mean that’s always going to be a tough one now the orange and Clemson
24:52
have had some good battles in the past Syracuse beat Clemson on Friday the 13th a couple years
24:58
back and almost gave Clemson a run for their money
25:00
for a second straight win at Death Valley this year will be a
25:03
little bit tougher what do you think about this weekend’s football game yeah I mean when
25:08
you look at this Clemson team just being number one overall Syracuse last weekend against
25:14
liberty just kind of like a tough game against the flames Syracuse didn’t have a lot of positives
25:19
so they’re going to have to play a lot better against this Clemson team create turnovers
25:23
and establish a running game on the ground well you’re going to be watching the game
25:26
this weekend or what are your plans for this weekend matt
25:28
I m of course going to be watching the game I mean this game is always one that Syracuse
25:33
fans circle on their schedule when Syracuse plays the tigers as head coach dabo sweeney
25:38
said this is a Syracuse team that you can’t take you know this is a Syracuse orange team
25:45
that’ll do it for us this Wednesday here on mornings on the hill I m mat Mlodzinski follow
25:48
us on social media
25:49
and I m Sarah also thanks for watching orange nation we’ll see you next Wednesday live at
25:54
