Mornings on the Hill

Mornings on the Hill for October 28, 2020

This episode of Mornings on the Hill provides coverage of final preparation for election day next week and a new scholarship named in honor of our beloved former Dean Lorraine Branham.

Amy coney Barrett nomination is affecting central New York an app developed by SU students
00:06
that promotes the black lives matter movement and a new scholarship to honor a former SU
00:12
dean all that plus weather and iron sports coming
00:16
up on this edition of mornings on the hill
00:18
good morning and welcome to mornings on the hill I m Samantha Croston
00:44
and I m Xavier brown let’s get right to our top story early voting began just four days
00:53
ago and the country as anticipated that over a third of the total votes have already been
00:58
cast our reporter Ryan Clark is live at the Dewitt town hall to see how Onondaga county
01:03
has been dealing with early voting
01:06
it could be a week it could be two weeks it depends on how slow it goes with the candidates
01:11
the reason why a combination of voter delays and party lines according to a new Siena college
01:17
poll when asked this question over 80 percent of republicans said they plan on voting in
01:24
person on election day while many more democrats plan to either stay home or vote early public
01:30
perception of who’s ahead and who’s behind in many ways doesn’t matter until I certify
01:35
that election on November 28th you know so the difference in when party voters hit the
01:40
polls can affect the numbers the board of elections says republican candidates like
01:45
president trump and john Katko could be leading the way heavily early but those numbers will
01:51
be misleading because not all votes will have been counted to help the public understand
01:57
the BOE has partnered with the Newhouse school of public communications at Syracuse university
02:03
to send students across the area to tell their stories it’s about democracy and action and
02:09
voting what are people’s individual stories about what motivates them to vote what was
02:14
difficult what was easy why do they do it
02:23
the 2020 election is less than a week away and Syracuse residents have seen a bombardment
02:28
of negative political advertising NCC’s James Corrigan reports on the damage these ads do
02:33
to the political system and the one local official bucking the trend
02:38
he’s got a pretty high approval rating higher perhaps than even his owner assemblyman al
02:43
stirpe who made riley the star of his campaign last week watching one nasty political ad
02:49
after another has made watching the news a soul-crushing experience this ad was a response
02:55
to the barrage of negative campaign ads in central new York it’s psychologically and
03:00
emotionally damaging to the entire country this year the Syracuse tv market has seen
03:07
the most congressional ads in the country and as attack ad after attack ad plays over
03:12
the air residents have gotten sick of them early voters in clay did not hold back on
03:19
the ads I m disgusted I m sick of them I think it’s terrible turn the sound off or change
03:24
the channel the consequence of negative campaigning is more than just a few annoyed viewers it
03:30
makes that cooperation that’s necessary to do politics much harder because you have disregard
03:37
or deep anger toward the opposition party rather than seeing them as a potential partner
03:42
this is a reality that voters like Richard duda are well aware of we’re going to have
03:46
actually have a better state a better county a better country
03:50
it’s going to take positive thinking and it’s going to take compromise it’s why ads like
03:55
stirpe s are seen as a breath of fresh air we’ve gotten dozens of
04:00
emails and voicemails they said we’ve been waiting for something that we can watch and
04:06
listen to James Corrigan mornings on the hill
04:10
Amy coney Barrett has been confirmed to the supreme court of the united states her appointment
04:15
secures a 6-3 conservative majority for the court enough to overturn landmark cases our
04:21
rob flax explains how one case if reversed could impact us here in Syracuse rob?
04:29
that’s right guys with that 6-3 conservative majority on the supreme court previously decided
04:34
cases don’t look so decided now Amy coney baron herself
04:37
saying that the crucial case roe v wade that decided abortion rights in this country is
04:42
not settled case law and is still up for discussion and what that means is parenthood here in
04:48
central new York are very concerned about that we’ve spoken to some members here at
04:53
planned parenthood and they say that their members are worrying that services that they
04:57
rely on might not be able to continue but for the time being
05:00
they have a message for those members who rely on
05:02
the care they give so we are still here we are still here to provide our patients with
05:08
education with the health care services that they need so they need not be concerned and
05:15
think that they have to go out and get um 500 packs of birth control pills today three
05:20
two one q now this is an important location this is the cny planned parenthood and it
05:27
would be the main location that a student would go to from SU if they needed some of
05:35
these services but planned parenthood says they’ve had people as far away as
05:38
Pennsylvania come because the quality of care that they can receive, and Syracuse students
05:42
are grateful the Panhellenic association and the
05:48
sororities here on SU have organized a fundraiser for them
05:49
now that’s independent of baron but it did coincide with it and those donations are skyrocketing
05:54
guys they’ve had over 2 000 donations so far and it’s not even close to done so a lot of
05:59
gratitude from the SU community for the services planned parenthood provides we’ll see if those
06:02
services can continue with Amy coney Barrett on the bench rob flax Mornings on the hill
06:10
we’ve been watching those COVID numbers closely as the Halloween weekend approaches mornings
06:14
on the hill Cyera Williams has our update this week Cyera how are those numbers looking?
06:21
yes that’s right and good morning Xavier but with those numbers looking pretty steady there
06:26
could be a change with Halloween weekend so far there are only 59 students in quarantine
06:31
this week there are 12 active cases within central new York area but just one outside
06:40
the new York area now if you take a look at this graph you can see that the recovered
06:44
cases continue to increase and there is a striking decrease in active cases so far this
06:50
week now given the off-campus party that uh spiked few cases just last week or a couple
06:56
weeks ago chancellor Kent Syverud said that there shouldn’t be a gathering that hosts
07:01
more than five people those who participate or go to a Halloween gathering can face consequences
07:08
in Syracuse
07:09
Cyera Williams mornings on the hill
07:12
due to the pandemic there’s something new this year for students leaving campus for
07:16
winter break steven shoemaker has more
07:18
Goal is we come back in January but we just want to err on the side of caution first as
07:27
the end of the semester is right around the corner Syracuse university students need to
07:31
properly pack up their belongings to head home in the event that students are unable
07:35
to return next semester due to the coronavirus pandemic this time around students
07:39
will need to do a better job of properly labeling their belongings they leave behind so the
07:43
housing department will know which items belong to which students
07:47
based on what we experienced last march when it was spring break students left didn’t pack
07:53
their belongings up and we couldn’t make head nor tales of whose belongings were on the
07:57
left side of the room and on the right side of the room Syracuse students should take
08:01
home all of their clothing valuables and essential items that they will need over winter
08:05
break larger items like refrigerators and TVs can be left behind but must be properly
08:11
labeled students who are living on canvas will not be able to come back over the break
08:15
and are going to have to return their room keys this will be done by placing the key
08:19
into the gold envelope and then returning it to your building’s main office the idea
08:24
of not being able to return next semester is sad but due to the state our country is
08:27
currently in it is safer to air on the side of caution you know honestly I try not to
08:31
think about it even though like in the back of my head I know that that’s a possibility
08:35
um it makes me really sad it is hard to accept that Syracuse university students are going
08:40
to have to start to pack up their rooms in just November but it is the right route to
08:44
take with next semester being unknown for mornings on the hill I m steven shoemaker
08:50
last week on mornings on the hill we told you about a scholarship being given to Kevin
08:54
Richardson from the central park five this morning we get to hear from Richardson himself
08:59
to find out what this degree really means to him people thought
09:03
not everyone, but it was others that thought that we were
09:07
basically, the bottom of the totem pole you know so to have my name attached to something
09:14
like Syracuse attached to kids to be inspired by me into
09:21
further kids education you know at the end of the day that’s all I really wanted to leave
09:26
my imprint on the world um I m not there yet but um I will be taking some classes
09:33
so, I m serious about really playing the trumpet again everything else seems great but to be
09:38
connected to have a bachelor s in fine arts and music
09:42
that’s icing on the cake and we are looking forward to Richardson joining us here on campus
09:50
in the spring
09:51
coming up here on mornings on the hill the university stepping up to honor the late dean
09:59
Lorraine Branham find out how plus what are students planning
10:03
for Halloween weekend stay with us for those stories and much more on mornings on the hill
10:12
our resident weather girl sierra Ryder is live out on the weather deck to tell us what
10:16
to expect
11:43
it’s been a while since we’ve last seen a black lives matter protest here in Syracuse
11:47
but they continue throughout the country reporter Sarah Al-Shaikh shares how three SU students
11:55
are helping the movement in their own way taking all the knowledge I learned four years
12:01
and actually applying it I feel like to something the world can use it just really just feels
12:06
amazing Caleb obiagu Brandon Elliott and john Paul bessong met at Syracuse university as
12:12
computer engineer and computer science majors and they created safe loot a website mapping
12:18
out black owned businesses across the united states right now it just feels like the black
12:24
community is struggling the most Caleb says naming the site safe loot is a way to reclaim
12:29
the word loot a word that’s overshadowed peaceful protests it’s a way to use the word loot in
12:35
a positive light but safe loot does not support looting we do not endorse looting of any kind
12:41
from any business it’s just um we also understand that the black community if they are looted
12:47
it would be harder to ever rebuild with just one click you can see all the black owned
12:53
businesses throughout the united states including right here in Syracuse all the flavors are
12:59
going to blend and mix together Darren Chavis is the owner of creole
13:03
Seoul the restaurant’s been around for five years but not without challenges monsieur
13:08
finale is a black-owned business they come in inspecting instead of expected but Chavis
13:15
says he’s honored to be listed on safe loot it’s the support he’s
13:19
been looking for this is going to give me a platform to really demonstrate you know
13:23
well let me know if I m the best for mornings on the hill I m Sarah Al-Shaikh
13:31
sorority recruitment is just a few months away potential new members got a glimpse about
13:36
how the recruitment process will run this year at the panhellenic Greek council’s recruitment
13:41
expo this past Monday night hundreds of potential new members hopped onto zoom and learned about
13:47
the recruitment process and all 13 sororities at SU those interested in joining a house
13:52
in the panhellenic council have until December 11th to register
13:58
Syracuse university is establishing a new scholarship program to honor the late dean
14:02
Lorraine Branham our ford hatchet details how the scholarship
14:06
adds to Branham’s legacy the Lorraine branham scholarship will be given to as many as 10
14:12
students each year to fund their education in honor of the late dean Lorraine branham
14:16
the scholarships will give talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance to
14:20
join other distinguished new house alums something associate dean hub brown says was always one
14:24
of branham’s goals to be a more diverse group to be a group that was more open to the future
14:29
of what the country and what the uh what our professions
14:32
are going to be all about and there’s just something so fitting about having a branham
14:35
scholarship pave the way for the next generation of brilliant journalists I
14:39
I can’t imagine a more fitting tribute to Lorraine uh and to what she stood for but
14:47
if the dean was still here she wouldn’t let the celebration last too long oh I think she’d
14:51
be very excited and then she’d turn around and said okay so now get to work because she
14:56
would she’d be all about making sure we started you know finding those students
15:01
dean branham of course passing away in April of 2019 but through this scholarship program
15:09
the university and the new health school are making sure
15:13
that her mounting and monumental legacy carries on for mornings on the hill I m Ford Hatchett,
15:18
Sam?
15:19
coming up after the break josh miller has your orange sports update and a world series
15:25
champion is caught partying with the team after testing positive for COVID 19 mid game
15:31
stay with us
15:33
good morning I m josh miller with your orange sports update here on mornings on the hill
15:40
the Clemson tigers are the number one ranked team in the country for a reason even on an
15:43
off day you’re going to get the best from the tigers the orange however
15:47
did hold their own for three quarters and had a lot of positives to build off of going
15:50
forward the orange defense continued to turn heads this defense swarms to the ball
15:57
and boy they are fast and physical turnovers in the Syracuse defense also go together like
16:01
peanut butter and jelly and they did that against the tigers too Garrett Williams how
16:05
about that man his first career interception is a pick six against Trevor Lawrence it was
16:09
also the future first round draft picks first career pick sticks thrown nonetheless a crib
16:13
call for Williams and the Syracuse defense is just flat out good
16:17
the orange got it done with explosive plays also a blocked punt set up with Sean tucker
16:21
rushing touchdown let’s not forget that tucker’s a freshman and he’s a beast he’s only going
16:26
to get better as time goes on and that’s a great positive for the orange rex Culpeper
16:30
with the exception of a few mistakes played well especially with the big plate of McKee
16:33
Johnson for an 83 yard head coach dino babers knew how good the tigers were but the effort
16:38
from the orange was there I think you’re playing a very exceptional football team and you just
16:45
can’t you can’t make mistakes it’s just hard to stay with a team like this you’ve got to
16:49
get lucky they got to give something to you and then you got to play almost a perfect
16:55
game time for the keys of the game for this weekend’s
16:57
matchup against wake forest first establishing a run game get Sean tucker going get the big
17:03
guys up front going force the wake forest defenders to pack the
17:06
box to then give space for receivers to get open one on one and make rex gold paper how
17:10
get some throws secondly explosive plays big runs big passes and great special teams play
17:16
will help the orange next turnovers when the orange don’t have the ball take it and when
17:21
they do keep it it’s pretty simple lastly the orange need to weather the storm the orange
17:26
can do all these things and keep their cool through adversity they’ll be able to get back
17:29
into the win column this weekend
17:43
there you have it the la dodgers are the 2020 world series champions the dodgers took the
17:47
title four games to two against the Tampa bay rays this was the dodgers third world
17:51
series appearance in four years they were finally able to walk away with a championship
17:55
their first one since 1988. two other big stories emerged from game six
18:00
of the series race starting pitcher Blake Snell was taken out of the game after not
18:04
giving up a single run and the raise up one I guess manager ray’s manager Kevin cash thought
18:09
Snell was pitching too well next at-bat Mookie bets gets a double sending Austin Barnes a
18:14
third who would then come home on a wild pitch tying the game then at the start of the eighth
18:18
inning dodgers third baseman Justin turner was removed from the field after his COVID
18:21
test came back positive after the dodgers win turner was celebrating back on the field
18:25
with teammates at times without a mask dodgers didn’t directly address turner’s behavior
18:29
but the move was highly criticized on social media
18:32
regardless the dodgers are your 2020 world series champs now for a look ahead to this
18:37
weekend for Cuse athletics women’s soccer takes on Miami on Thursday still chasing their
18:44
first win of the season currently sitting at 0-3 cross country competes
18:48
at the acc championships in north Carolina Friday and at 8 p.m. men’s soccer is in Virginia
18:53
also looking for their first win coming off a tie against Virginia tech last Sunday Saturday
18:58
we have football against wake forest and on Sunday at noon women’s soccer has
19:02
another go against Virginia still to come here on mornings on the hill we found out
19:08
how restaurants are going to fair a Syracuse winter stay with
19:12
us that story and more just ahead
19:17
Onondaga county has put 200 thousand dollars aside to help local restaurants stay afloat
19:22
this winter earlier this week I went to a local restaurant
19:25
to find out what one restaurant owner plans to do with the money in march alone restaurants
19:33
lost 25 billion dollars and 3 million jobs nationally rise and shine owner Danielle mercury
19:40
says the 5 000 grand will stop the bleeding I think we have about 700 restaurants in Onondaga
19:46
county I mean think about every single one of them going to 50 capacity and then half
19:52
of them going out of business that’s a lot of money that’s just gone the grant is aimed
19:58
at helping restaurants extend their outdoor dining season mercury has already spent thousands
20:03
on an outdoor patio four heaters and a fire pit but even with
20:07
all that on days like today when the temperature drops into the 40s people choose not to eat
20:12
outside that’s why mercury plans to build a see-through dome-like structure
20:17
right here in the parking lot that will be fully heated the structure should be done
20:21
by the end of November and will fit 25 to 30 people one in three new Yorkers in the
20:26
restaurant business are still unemployed since the beginning of the pandemic new York state
20:31
restaurant association president Melissa flyshoot says that getting employment numbers back
20:36
up in the industry is crucial for community and economic development when restaurants
20:41
go into a neighborhood they tend to work really hard to revitalize the community and bring
20:47
people together they provide jobs and then you see oftentimes that other businesses will
20:52
come back mercury says adapting to change is what makes her and the people in the restaurant
20:58
industry so resilient we have that backbone that just kind of pushes us to keep going
21:03
no matter what so when we faced all these challenges there was just one more day for
21:09
us applications for the grant will be available on the economic development website by the
21:15
end of this week
21:16
finally this morning the CDC released guidelines on how to stay safe when celebrating Halloween
21:28
some of the activities they suggest to avoid may surprise you door to door and trunk or
21:35
treating violates social distancing costume masks don’t substitute face mask and the two
21:40
should not be layered it is a safety hazard because layering masks makes it hard to bedding
21:45
make breathe hands are clean outdoor movies with other friends is dangerous if screaming
21:53
will likely occur more distance is needed to lower the risk
21:58
there are lower risk activities that you should try instead one is social distance pumpkin
22:04
carving another is scavenge scavenger hunts in the neighborhood while admiring houses
22:10
it is even safer to do a scavenger hunt in your own house movie night is also a great
22:14
option especially if you can do it in your own home there are plenty of Halloween themed
22:19
movies to pick from in virtual costume contests make sure to have a prize ready for the winner
22:26
speaking of prizes Xavier one great one could be chocolate it is national chocolate day
22:30
and I for one am ready to celebrate what’s your favorite chocolate if you had to choose
22:35
one
22:36
this might not be a popular opinion but I am not a chocolate fan what would you say
22:42
your favorite piece of chocolate is for me definitely snickers or milky way but folks
22:45
either way whether you like chocolate or not make sure you find a way to celebrate today
22:50
well honestly that is going to do it for us this Wednesday here on mornings on the hill
22:54
