coming up on mornings on the hill the dome is still being renovated as the football season
00:05
kicks off Onondaga County is looking for people to help keep the integrity of the vote students
00:10
tune in via zoom to juice jam and let us know if boogie with the hoodie was ahead all that
00:15
plus your weather and orange sports coming up on this edition of mornings on the hill
00:20
good morning my name is Cyera Williams and thanks for joining us on mornings on the hill
00:37
and I’m Ryan Clark here’s a look at some of the stories we’ll be talking about in our
00:47
first half hour [Music]
00:50
last night a student a Syracuse student was robbed at knife point and demanded to hand
00:59
over their belongings after the mugger fled the scene police say he met up with an additional
01:04
suspect behind the Syracuse VA medical center
01:07
no injuries were reported but police described the suspect as 5 10 male medium build
01:12
wearing a dark jacket sweatpants and a black hat
01:16
if you have any information following this incident you can call the number on the screen
01:20
a student tested positive at Jamesville elementary school.
01:24
a student has a positive at Jamesville elementary school. Jamesville elementary closed Monday
01:32
after a positive case but open reopened Tuesday CDC says 40% of children who are COVID positive
01:41
are asymptomatic. superintendents are reassuring parents and students by increased cleanings
01:48
renovations to the carrier dome have been underwear for over a year and mornings on
01:52
the hill reporter Ford Hatchet is outside the dome this morning to detail how things
01:56
are going ford how are things looking out there?
02:00
Yeah Ryan well the dome’s new roof much anticipated it’s nearing its completion in fact this morning
02:05
as we speak you can see some of the renovations going on late last minute construction on
02:09
the roof behind me once it’s completed the dome will be ready to host orange sports for
02:13
the first time since march but chief facilities officer at the university Pete salas says
02:17
the dome could actually be used as a classroom
02:19
we need this facility for our students now I need to get this place open not only for
02:25
athletics but for our students
02:27
it’s very very important to the student body with a limited number of classrooms on campus
02:31
large enough to accommodate COVID restrictions Sala says students should be able to access
02:35
the dome to complete their work Sala says the long-awaited new roof and air conditioning
02:39
are on their way to being completed as well the renovations also include projects that
02:43
make the dome more accessible to those with disabilities such as concessions counters
02:48
made for everyone
02:49
not having a cutout where somebody in a wheelchair needs to roll up if you and I are together
02:53
and you’re a chair user you have an issue we can go to the same counter and it’s the
02:57
right height
02:58
now Sala says the project is still scheduled to be completed by this Friday just two days
03:04
from now which would give the university a week’s worth of breathing room before the
03:07
football team has their home opener against Georgia tech next weekend. Ryan?
03:13
the Barnes Center is holding in-person classes on the basketball courts next to the women’s
03:17
building the fitness center has also begun to host
03:19
classes such as Zumba on zoom the gym in the barn center is
03:23
now open by appointment
03:29
our mornings on the hill Samantha Croston checked out
03:41
a
04:01
fundraiser Sunday morning held by the flight room fitness
05:37
if you’re comfortable coming to the ballot box
05:44
in November the last day to apply online for an absentee ballot is on October 27th but
05:49
post office officials say they cannot guarantee timely delivery within 15 days of the election
05:54
November 2nd is the final day to apply for an in-person for an absentee ballot. November
05:59
third or election day is the last day to postmark a ballot received by November 10th make sure
06:04
to get those votes in with election day right around the corner
06:13
COVID 19 concerns have kept people away from the ballot box new info suggests staying home
06:18
isn’t the only issue with voting during a pandemic typically during this time the Onondaga
06:23
board of elections begins its hiring process for elections inspectors people hired to ensure
06:28
the integrity of each and every vote now the BOE has to take precautions to prevent the
06:33
spread of covet 19 and that cost well it’s expensive so we’ll have extra inspectors at
06:39
every polling place that will uh be assigned the task of maintaining social distance uh
06:47
inside the polling place and uh making sure our all our environment is clean inside the
06:58
polling place that tables are wiped down after every use that polling machines are weight
07:00
own after every use and that voters remain safe while they come and vote in person other
07:03
costs like ppe sanitary supplies and extra polling inspectors
07:07
seem small but sarnie says that on a county level the costs are massive and troublesome
07:12
um you know we have a lot of grant money in Ontario county uh that we’ve kind of saved
07:17
for a rainy day and it’s raining uh so uh you know we’re using a lot of it but that
07:22
being said I mean that grant money was slated for you know machine replacements and stuff
07:23
down the line so we’re gonna feel this budget hit just how badly Syracuse feels the hit
07:35
is something sony says we won’t know until after the election
07:38
and coming up on mornings on the hill a local business is hurt from a lack of fans in the
07:45
dome
07:47
time to check your weather I hope everyone put away those jackets today in Syracuse because
07:58
it is going to be a high 77 degrees with temperatures mostly sunny and temperatures will drop down
08:05
to 66 degrees Later tonight but the national news story for today is hurricane sally which
08:11
made landfall in Alabama as a Category 2 storm that is threatening record floods and for
08:18
today let’s look at the five-day forecast Friday will be mostly sunny and cool with
08:25
a high of 61 degrees and a low of 39. this Saturday it will also be mostly sunny and
08:28
cool with a high of 59 and a low of 38 and on Sunday you’ll be able to enjoy mostly sunny
08:33
skies with a high being of 61 degrees and the low dropping to 40. back to you in the
08:38
studio
08:46
well local shops in downtown Syracuse see an uptick in sales when the orange are in
08:50
the dome this year well the players are playing but the fans across the country have to watch
08:55
from their TVs Mornings on the Hill reporter sierra Ryder says no games means less money
09:00
for the Syracuse economy
09:09
hi Ryan it was announced Friday that there will be no fans allowed inside the dome for
09:14
the foreseeable future and this is going to affect some of the stores in downtown Syracuse
09:18
that typically rely on these fans for sales one shop that will be feeling the effects
09:23
is scholars and champs this store sells a variety of vintage Syracuse university clothing
09:28
and paraphernalia it typically is a popular destination for students and fans on a football
09:33
weekend now store owner Bert ausser told me he’s already been noticing a difference
09:41
scholars and champs he’s up to 40 transactions on a su football weekend and now the goal
10:02
is to just maintain its sales and reach out to the existing Syracuse community for its
10:07
sales back to you in the studio.
10:10
the revised 2020 and 2021 schedule with some plays replaced with a virtual medium Syracuse
10:18
stage is moving to an online program for the entirety of the fall season the six show series
10:23
will be available online to those who pay to subscribe in the Syracuse community market
10:27
director joe Wieland says despite the shift online the theater is still losing out on
10:31
in-person revenue we wouldn’t expect to make even half of what we would make in a normal
10:39
season we would expect that you know if things go well hard to say maybe forty percent we
10:45
lost in terms of revenue from last season we were down about a million dollars the music
10:54
and entertainment industry took a hard blow with proven 19 shutting down bars and recording
10:59
studios a rally being held on September 22nd to let hashtag let the music play is challenging
11:06
the executive order by Andrew Cuomo governor Andrew Cuomo that is that limits large gatherings.
11:12
A field packed with Syracuse student parking lots cluttered with cars and feeling the vibration
11:18
of your favorite artist blare through your bones is usually what Syracuse students experience
11:23
each year for juice jam a virtual concert with headlining artists like a boogie with
11:28
the hoodie ahri linux and bad bunny took students to their laptops and screens this year to
11:35
be virtual I thought it was pretty good because I mean again we’re getting used to this whole
11:41
new world so I think it was good just to have something and for it to be virtual it was
11:45
really good for the virtual concert I honestly think they did the best that they could have
11:50
done I mean there could have been that live aspect with 400 students gathered on vimeo
11:57
students say it just wasn’t the same and look forward to a COVID-free Juice Jam next year
12:04
well Syracuse university libraries are offering a virtual series of workshops starting this
12:08
week a bit of a solution here the workshops include writing research art and other ways
12:13
that su feels students can grow while still on zoom the seminars are available to students
12:17
faculty and researchers with registration
12:25
and it’s still not too late to sign up for one of the several club sports teams and intramural
12:29
events on campus Stephen has the latest on how you can get involved Stephen you’re there
12:35
thanks Ryan are you still trying to get involved in activities on campus if the answer to that
12:41
question is yes it is not too late for students to sign up for one of the many club sports
12:45
and intramural events that Syracuse has to offer if you go online to the barn center
12:51
at the arch under be active there are links that list all the club sports teams as well
12:55
as the intramural teams you can get involved in by clicking on the intramural sports tab
12:59
it will take you to the homepage where you will then click on the link that says
13:03
I am league’s website this website will show you all the intramural events as well as club
13:08
sports teams that you can sign up for I am definitely intrigued by the punt pass and
13:12
kick intramural event you have until October 1st to register before the deadline closes
13:17
there are also a bunch of different video game leagues and tournaments you can get involved
13:21
in for those of you who are video game fanatics make sure to jump at the opportunity to register
13:27
for one of the many ways to get involved at Syracuse university also make sure to keep
13:32
in mind that different club sports and intramural events are subject to change due to the ongoing
13:37
coven 19 pandemic reporting live for mornings on the hill Im Stephen shoemaker back to
13:42
you
13:43
thanks, steven coming up on mornings on the hill Syracuse football comes off their first
13:55
game of the season
14:03
welcome back to mornings on the hill Im James Corrigan with your sports update and
14:07
it was an off-season of injuries opt-outs and coaching changes but the Syracuse football
14:11
team finally took the field this past Saturday the orange traveled to a fanless chapel hill
14:15
to take on north Carolina but again many thought would never happen turned into one su fans
14:20
wished they never saw the orange came in having won its last six season openers lots of new
14:25
faces this year for the orange including both coaching coordinators first drive of the game
14:30
for unc super software Sam 11 yards out for the score tar heels up seven nothing the dsu
14:37
defense did step up later in the first the pass from Sam Howell the deflection from
14:42
ifatu melo fondue right to Michael jones for the pick the orange though would turn it over
14:46
on downs the offense just could not get it going but they did catch a break late in the
14:51
first half orange now down 7-3 Noah Cooney the punter gets blown up that’s a 15-yard
14:56
penalty quarterback tommy DeVito would lead them down the field for this 29-yard field
15:00
goal attempt at the end of the half but Andre Schmidt whips it to the right and it’s 7-3
15:05
at the break second half more big defensive plays for the orange Sam Howell back to pass
15:11
again and who else but Andre cisco with the int the 13th of his career that leads all
15:17
active players in the country the d kept su in this game but things did fall apart in
15:22
the fourth quarter first it was Javonte Williams taking in for one hour out to make it 17-6
15:27
then Williams again with a six-yard score the second of his three rushing touchdowns
15:31
in the quarter the tar heels would go on to win 31-6 and
15:34
after the game Syracuse coach dino babers said a silver lining of this one was the fact
15:39
that they even played you know I told the official I said he asked me something during
15:47
the game unless I tell you what Im a lot happier than
15:49
the big ten coaches and I bet you’re a lot higher than the big ten a lot happier than
15:52
the big ten officials we’re playing football in the acc were going to get better we’re
15:56
excited
15:57
the su’s men’s soccer season finally gets underway this weekend and after an off-season
16:03
unlike any other the orange are ready to get back on the pitch
16:06
our own josh miller has more Syracuse university men’s soccer season kicks off.
16:12
this Saturday with an exhibition matchup against the university of Virginia here at hook way
16:16
fields the range have been hard at work preparing for this season from zoom workouts to personal
16:22
workouts the orange are eager to play head coach Ian McIntyre spoke about his group and
16:27
the excitement heading into this season as a group we’re really excited by by the chance
16:35
to to compete and to do something that we all
16:38
love this is um uh now we’re getting closer and closer and with a chance now to to pull
16:45
on the uniforms and represent Syracuse university coach McIntyre also stressed with having players
16:51
from all around the world it was not easy to get everyone together we’ve got student
16:56
athletes we’ve got players from all across the world and all across the country so um
17:02
and each had their own challenge this year’s roster
17:08
includes 14 newcomers and 14 returners the orange are led by a senior combo of sandre
17:13
norheim and Simon Triantafillou norheim a defender from Norway was nominated as an acc
17:19
preseason watch list the two combined for 15 points with six goals last season and look
17:24
to lead this young orange roster Triantafillou says the goal is the same it has been every
17:30
season each game we’re going to just go and try and win each game focus on each game and
17:36
our goal is to win the championship that’s still been the goal and eventually the ncaa
17:43
championships in the spring the orange look to put together a successful 2020 campaign
17:47
no matter the circumstances that first test for this young men’s soccer team comes September
17:52
25th against the united states naval academy josh miller mornings on the hill
17:57
With Tom Brady gone from new England the bills come in picked by some to win the afc east
18:07
the jets well not so much to orchard park we go and it was all buffalo from the start
18:13
first quarter josh Allen with the bootleg from three yards out and he could have crawled
18:16
into the end zone from there fills up seven nothing and it would not get better for the
18:20
jets later in the first Allen backed the pass and the jets clearly practicing their social
18:26
distancing not one green jersey in sight and the easy pitching catch to Zach moss for the
18:31
score the bills doubled their lead in the first and they would triple it in the second
18:35
Allen the quick throw to john brown and he does the rest from 17 yards out the bills
18:40
won this one comfortably by the score of 27 to 17.
18:44
and in the NBA jimmy butler in the Miami heat took down the Boston Celtics to take a 1-0
18:49
lead in the eastern conference finals and the Denver nuggets completed the 3-1 series
18:54
comeback to stun the la clippers in game seven of round two they’ll take on LeBron and lakers
19:00
in the western conference finals
19:02
well basketball season may be right around the corner but for one former su player helping
19:07
local youths improve their game has no off season here’s matt baginski with more Im
19:12
outside of the Carmelo Anthony basketball center named after the freshman sensation
19:17
who led Syracuse to their first and only national title
19:21
and while Melos had a successful career in the NBA traveling all over the country
19:25
one of his former teammates Billy Edelen has stayed in the Syracuse area his reason to
19:31
help showcase the basketball talent in the three one five between mine boom there we
19:36
go one two good job originally where Im from in the dmv is tons of uh talented kids
19:45
and stuff so when I was here I saw a lot of kids that reminded me of kids there Im
19:49
like Syracuse but out of hotbed had some talent but I could tell they needed some of the
19:52
the direction and polish so 13 years later now a lot of those kids are all driving some
19:53
coaching some you know playing overseas just doing all types of stuff so here we are kids
19:55
um you know grow right in front of you with their game their confidence so you just see
19:58
them be successful and that’s like more important than even money and those two girls practicing
20:11
with Edelman drove half an hour to receive instruction
20:15
but to Edelen that drive to get better stands out you got kids they from phoenix you got
20:22
kids from here you see kids I don’t you know and they know so it means something to me
20:25
and Edelen said that his brand which is called gym rats is open to anyone but there is one
20:30
condition come ready to work hard needle and also told me that his instructions are open
20:40
to anyone and come free of charge but he does work on prices
20:45
with some people it’s just up to the person on what route they want to take with him he
20:49
runs them in the evenings at Dunbar park on south state street in Syracuse and just says
20:55
to come ready to listen and try hard for mornings on the hill Im matt majensky now back to
21:00
James in the studio
21:02
thank you matt and that’ll wrap it up for sports today sierra Ill send it back to
21:05
you Cyera.
21:06
Still to come here on Mornings on the hill one last look at your weather and a visit
21:12
to central new Yorks apple orchard as apple picking season is underway stay with us that
21:17
story and more just ahead
21:18
the start of fall is only five days away and mornings on the hill reporter Sarah Al-Shaikh
21:27
shares how students are getting a jump start on the upstate fall tradition not too long
21:33
ago being out during COVID-19 is was not being too long ago being out with
21:39
friends was not an option because of COVID 19. now su students can do different activities
21:44
while staying safe starting with an activity upstate new York knows a lot about so it’s
21:49
really fun to be out with friends Julia Bauman is one of the students who went on this weekend’s
21:58
apple picking event hosted by the barn center students say this event is about more than
22:03
just picking apples so getting to be outside and enjoy like the nice day and you know get
22:08
to spend time with friends somewhere off campus has been really nice the saying goes an apple
22:13
a day keeps the doctor away and for the barn center keeping doctors away in students healthy
22:18
is their main priority during events like these everybody has to be wearing masks on
22:20
the bus and during the activity as well and we highly encourage social distancing student
22:29
leaders at the barn center say these activities help those who’ve been feeling stuck inside
22:33
this gives people the opportunity to get out and do something uh while also it’s like staying
22:38
safe because being outside is one of the better options and while student leaders are taking
22:43
steps to make sure students are leaving healthy they also hope students are leaving with some
22:49
really good apples maybe some cider donuts but also closer relationships with their friends
22:55
if you have apples on your grocery list consider signing up for the next apple picking event
23:00
there are three more and you can find the details on your wellness portal for mornings
23:04
on the hill Im Sarah Al-Shaikh
23:09
well the month of September is an important one to the Hispanic community in central New
23:12
York mornings on the hill reporter Xavier brown is live to tell us why Xavier
23:18
yesterday marked the beginning of the Hispanic heritage month here on here locally and nationally
23:23
where people took part of the celebrations all over the place this month provides an
23:28
opportunity for students and faculty to learn more about the culture and history of Americans
23:32
who have laid groundwork like even throughout like middle and high school and elementary
23:37
school and Im from Miami so you know a lot of a
23:41
lot of nice kind of cultures everything there so being able to celebrate it here it’s definitely
23:47
another piece of home comments will be held this month documentary screenings panel discussions
23:52
performances and lectures I think understanding that su
23:57
is a PWI – a predominantly what institution it’s important to
24:01
keep that community strong
24:05
the idea for the Hispanic heritage month celebrated throughout September in the first half of
24:08
October began as a way to promote history culture and the contributions of Hispanic
24:13
Americans specifically those whose ancestors came from Spain Mexico the Caribbean and central
24:19
and south America communities mark the achievements of Hispanic and Latino Americans with festivals
24:24
and educational activities Hispanic influences are tightly knitted in the fabric of American
24:29
life music food and art are just a few of the things they celebrate this month some
24:34
Greek organizations as well as the office of multicultural affairs the enrollment and
24:38
the in student experiment experience will be hosting events all month and you can find
24:43
more of that information at the website on your screen
24:45
