COMING UP ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL…WE’RE EXPECTING NEW INFORMATION
REGARDING THE WEARING OF MASKS ON SU’S CAMPUS. WE’LL HAVE A LIVE REPORT COMING UP.
ALSO..SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES AFFECTING JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING…INCLUDING GIFTS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY THAT MIGHT STILL BE ON THE WAY.
AND IN SPORTS…SU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN A NAIL BITER OVER THE WEEKEND.
AND A STAR PLAYER EARNS A NEW CAREER HIGH.
All THOSE STORIES PLUS FREEZING TEMPERATURES FOR TODAY’S
WEATHER…COMING UP ON THIS TUESDAY EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
GOOD MORNING. I’M MARCUS VEAL. THANKS FOR JOINING US FOR THE TUESDAY EDITION OF MORNINGS ON THE HILL. AND I’M MORGAN SCOTT. HERE’S A LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT IN OUR FIRST HALF HOUR. OUR TOP STORY THIS HOUR… MASK MANDATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE CHANGING, BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE UNIVERSITY?
OUR ALLISON TURNER JOINS US LIVE TO TELL US IF WE’LL BE STAYING MASKED UP
THANKS, GUYS.
LAST WEEK, NEW YORK GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL ANNOUNCED THAT THE
STATEWIDE MASK MANDATE WOULD OFFICIALLY EXPIRE ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10.
THAT MEANS MASKS ARE NOT REQUIRED IN BUSINESSES, BUT DOES THAT CHANGE MASKING ON CAMPUS? NOT QUITE.
ALTHOUGH GOVERNOR HOCHUL WILL RE-EVALUATE MASKING IN SCHOOLS IN EARLY MARCH, MASKS WILL STILL BE REQUIRED ON SYRACUSE’S CAMPUS FOR THE TIME BEING.
A FEW HOURS AFTER GOVERNOR HOCHUL’S ANNOUNCEMENT, SYRACUSE VICE CHANCELLOR MICHAEL HAYNIE SENT OUT A CAMPUS-WIDE EMAIL THAT SHARED THE UNIVERSITY’S RESPONSE.
THE EMAIL SAID THAT MASKS ARE STILL REQUIRED INDOORS ON CAMPUS IN PUBLIC SETTINGS, AND WE ARE STILL IN THE ‘RED’ LEVEL FOR OUR MASKING FRAMEWORK.
BUT, CASES HAVE BEEN ON A GRADUAL DECLINE SINCE JANUARY 28. THERE ARE
ONLY 55 REPORTED ACTIVE CASES ON CAMPUS, DOWN NEARLY 300 CASES SINCE
THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES. HAYNIE SAID THAT BECAUSE CASES HAVE BEEN TRENDING DOWN, WE COULD BE MOVING TO THE ‘BLUE’ LEVEL SOON.
THIS WOULD MEAN THAT MASKS WOULD BE REQUIRED IN CLASSROOMS, BUT
THEY WOULD NOT BE REQUIRED IN OTHER INDOOR SETTINGS ON CAMPUS FOR VACCINATED PEOPLE. UNVACCINATED INDIVIDUALS WILL STILL NEED TO WEAR A MASK IN ALL INDOOR SETTINGS.
SO DON’T THROW OUT YOUR MASKS JUST YET, WE WILL STILL BE MASKING UP ON CAMPUS FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ON SYRACUSE’S COVID LEVELS, VISIT SYRACUSE-DOTE-D-U/STAYSAFE.
FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL, I’M ALLISON TURNER.
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF INFORMATION STUDIES IS ADDING TWO NEW
MAJORS FOR THE FALL 20-22 SEMESTER….APPLIED DATA ANALYTICS AND INNOVATION, — AND — SOCIETY AND TECHNOLOGY. PREVIOUSLY THE I-SCHOOL OFFERED JUST ONE MAJOR, INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY.
WITH FULL APPROVAL FROM THE NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT LAST SUMMER…OFFICIALS AT THE I-SCHOOL ARE ADVERTISING THE NEW MAJORS TO INCOMING STUDENTS. LOVE IS STILL IN THE AIR THIS MORNING. DID YOU FEEL THE LOVE LAST NIGHT?
OUR AIR-EE HORTON JOINS US LIVE TO TELL US ABOUT A LOCAL FLORIST WHO WAS DEALING WITH SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES THIS SEASON. GOOD MORNING. THAT’S RIGHT MARCUS LOVE IS IN THE AIR. I HOPE YOU ALL AT
HOME HAD A FABULOUS VALENTINES OR GALENTINES DAY. A LOCAL FLORIST
SHOP IN SYRACUSE SPOKE WITH ME ABOUT SOME OF THE ISSUES WITH SUPPLIES LEADING UP TO VALENTINES DAY.
Customers, phones ringing, and going through orders is the sights and sounds you’ll come across this
I have been coming here uhhh.. ‘How long are you all been here?’ ‘I think about 40 years’.
I’ve been coming here 40 years and before that I used to go to their store in Eastwood.
Regulars like Bill love supporting the Coleman business, even if a few things change because of the supply chain.
For us its kinda just affected like small things that are hard to find like boxes.
Coleman Florist shop can see upwards of four hundred to five-hundred orders during the valentines season and Arielle says that even though there have been supply chain issues, Valentines orders can proceed as planned.
Luckily we have been in business so long that we can anticipate better what our needs are, so we started planning months ago what our specials would be and looking at what was available so that we could guarantee things.
Arielle says by shopping and buying directly from farms they have been able to mitigate the supply chain issue so they can stay consistent with the products for their customers. ARIELLE TOLD ME THAT PRICES HAVE GONE UP THIS YEAR COMPARED TO YEARS
PAST, BUT SINCE THEY GET THEIR FLOWER SUPPLY FROM A LOCAL FARM. THEY
HAVE PLENTY OF ROSES. LIVE FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL… ARI HORTON WITH LOVE STILL IN THE AIR, OUR THOMAS COOK IS LIVE TO LET US KNOW IF THE STOCK MARKET IS ALSO FEELING THE LOVE.
Thanks, Marcus. The stock market is in the green this morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up over 300 points. The S&P 500 is up a percent and the NASDAQ is up just over one and a half percent.
Todays open comes as a positive sign following a three day sell off. The DOW shed over
500 points Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile the NASDAQ dropped close to 3 percent on
Friday. The recent sell off is due to tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The United States accnounced it was closing the Kyiv (KEEV) embassy yesterday and said quote “temporarily relocating” all remaining people.
Since the turn of the calendar… the market has been down overall. The DOW has fallen close to 5 percent and the NASDAQ is in the red over 11 percent. The year long drop has been attributed to inflation and rising costs. According to Triple-A, the national average for a gallon of gas is 3 dollars and 49 cents. That is up from one year ago where gas was 2 dollars and 51 cents.
That’s your stocks in 60. Marcus back to you.

OUR RACHELLE LEGRAND IS IN STUDIO TO TELL US WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WEEKEND .
Thank you Morgan. Today is 12 degrees but you are definitely going to want to bundle up with a scarf, hat, maybe even two pairs of gloves because it feels like one degree outside. Humidity is at 67%, dew point is three degrees. Luckily, its not too windy this morning, at only 8 miles per hour, for now.
However as for the rest of the day, we’re seeing a slight chance of snow showers. I always say you are better off safe than sorry. I recommend wearing your snow gear, just in case. As for the rest of the afternoon, it is going to look a little gloomy. Temperatures will stay below thirty, but it is nothing we are not used to in Syracuse. As we move further into the afternoon, temperatures will increase to 27 degrees but will drop to 19 as most of you are leaving work this afternoon. And temperatures will continue to decrease to 11 degrees by midnight. But for the rest of the week, we are going to be looking at a rollercoaster of temperatures. It will be a bit of a wet week. Wednesday will start off sunny but we will have rain in the late evening and that rain that will carry us over into Thursday.Thursday will be the warmest day of the week with temperatures reaching a high of 54 degrees. But don’t get too excited because Friday, we will return to below 30. Friday’s forecast is looking at some snow, mainly before 1pm, but that same snow will return again on Saturday. But we’ll end the weekend on a happier note putting the sun back in Sunday, We’ll end the weekend at 37 degrees giving us something to look forward to. And that is all for weather. Back to you Morgan and Marcus. FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH, MORNINGS ON THE HILL IS HIGHLIGHTING LOCAL BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSESS.
REPORTER LAUREN HELMBRECHT (HELM-brekt) IS LIVE FROM A FITNESS CENTER
IN SOUTH SYRACUSE THAT’S FOCUSED ON DOING MORE THAN JUST GETTING PEOPLE’S HEART RATES UP. NATIONWIDE, BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN PEOPLE MAKE UP LESS THAN
THIRTEEN PERCENT OF GYM AND FITNESS CLUB MEMBERSHIPS, ACCORDING TO
DATA FROM THE GLOBAL HEALTH AND FITNESS ASSOCIATION. BUT NOT HERE AT
SOUTHSIDE FITNESS, WHICH OPENED SIX YEARS AGO IN THE PREDOMINATELY BLACK SOUTH SYRACUSE NEIGHBORHOOD. SOUTHSIDE’S GOAL…MAKE FITNESS AND HEALTH ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN THIS COMMUNIT
GETTING REPS IN AT THE GYM CAN BE HARD WORK…ESPECIALLY IF YOU DON’T
FEEL WELCOME. FROM A LACK OF FINANCES TO FEAR, PEOPLE OFTEN DON’T
EVEN STEP FOOT INSIDE. SO THAT’S WHY TIMOTHY EDWARDS STARTED SOUTHSIDE FITNESS IN HIS OWN COMMUNITY.
People all the time, they look in the window, we always invite them in, walk them through and I introduce myself. And ask if they’ve ever been to the gym before. Like I said, 80% of the time they haven’t been to the gym before, that’s why they get intimidated.
EDWARDS GREW UP IN THE SOUTHSIDE AND BUILT THE GYM HIMSELF AS A PASSION PROJECT.
For Southside fitness members, it isn’t necessarily the equipment that brings them in the door, but rather, the community that helps lift them up.
You know, everybody knows your name, my name. It’s like Cheers.
We personally know everyone that comes in here. We know their name, we know every member. They talk to us every day, say hi to them, come talk to us about their problems.
When you have friends that push you, it makes it a little easier to come back in day after day.
64-YEAR-OLD KEITH MOODY’S NAME IS KNOWN AROUND THAT GYM AND THAT’S
BECAUSE OF HIS DEDICATION. HE WALKS THREE MILES ROUND TRIP SPECIFICALLY TO COME TO SOUTHSIDE.
Cuz I love this gym. I love the people who run it. It’s a great atmosphere. And it serves my purpose.
AND WHILE MOODY GOAL IS HITTING A NEW P-R ON THE BENCH, SOUTHSIDE
FITNESS’ GOAL IS GETTING INTERESTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE DOOR. EVEN JUST…
One more, get up.
SOUTHSIDE FITNESS OWNER TIMOTHY EDWARDS OFFERS CASH-PAYMENT OPTIONS AND FREE CONSULTATIONS SO THAT FINANCES AREN’T A REASON WHY PEOPLE DON’T CHECK OUT THE GYM .
EDWARDS SAYS HE’S HOPING TO EXPAND SOUTHSIDE FITNESS IN THE COMING
MONTHS. HE’S LOOKING TO RENT A NEW SPACE NEXT DOOR, WHICH WOULD
TRIPLE THE SQUARE-FOOTAGE. EDWARDS HOPES TO ADD TURF FOR LOCAL KIDS
TO PRACTICE SPORTS, AND A WOMEN-ONLY WORKOUT SPACE. IN SYRACUSE, I’M LAUREN HELMBRECHT FOR MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
STILL TO COME HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL. SYRACUSE WOMENS BASKETBALL WINS IN THE FINAL 10 SECONDS. AND ANOTHER LOCAL SYRACUSE GYM IS TEACHING KIDS HOW TO STAY SAFE. STAY WITH US–THAT STORY AND MORE JUST AHEAD AFTER THE BREAK. GOOD MORNING I’M CALVIN CHRISTOFORO WITH YOUR ORANGE SPORTS UPDATE HERE ON MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
We have all seen this movie before
no not that one
no not that one
yes that one, Syracuse men’s basketball gets written off in January and then starts to serge
in February, and that’s exactly what SU was doing until this happened, Orange Star Big man Jesse Edwards who had been so crucial to the Cuse’s winning streak went down with a season ending injury last week against Boston college making this season happy ending all the more unlikely. And when the Orange went down to Blacksburg this weekend without Edwards they got romped 71-59 to Virginia Tech, in a game where head coach Jim Boeheim says his team just didn’t have enough offense.
WE GOT SOME GOOD LOOKS, 4 OR 5 PRETTY GOOD LOOKS FROM
THE 3 POINT LINE, AND DIN’T MAKE THEM, OUR OFFENSE HAS LET US DOWN, I
THOUGHT OFFENSIVLY WE COULD SLOW THEM A LITTLE BIT, AND WE DID’NT
CAPITALIZE ON THE OFFENSIVE END.
Those 59 points are the second fewest SU has scored in a in an acc game this season and the loss brings the cuse back down to 500 in conference play, they good new is it has a golden opportunity to get to 500 on the season when Boston College comes to the dome Saturday afternoon a team the orange have beaten 7 straight.
Switching over to Women’s hoops it hasn’t been the season Vonn reed and company had hoped for, coming into Sunday’s contest with Pitt the orange were just 3-9 in acc play, but the Cuse might of played the game of the year when it went up to the steel city.
Flipping the script over to lacrosse, it was opening weekend for SU men’s and women’s lacrosse, which means it was coaching debuts for Gary Gait on the men’s side and Kayla Trannior on the women’s side. We’ll start with the men who welcomed in Holy Cross to the dome and then quickly welcomed holy cross out of the dome
SU leveled the crusaders 28-5. the offensive explosion is the most the cuse has scored in a season opener and just to goals shy of the teams single game record of 30 that occurred back in 1991. for their efforts the orange move up from 13 to 9 in this weeks uslia rankings, that is the good news, the bad news comes in the form of su’s next opponent #1 Maryland comes to town next Sunday for a noon faceoff. ON THE WOMNEN’S SIDE OF THINGS, SU WOMEN’S LACROSSE OPENNED UP THE
KAYLA TREANOR CAMPIGN WITH A BANG, THE THIRD RANKED ORANGE PICKED UP
NOT ONE BUT A PAIR OF VICTORIES OVER THE WEEKEND. THE CUSE GRABBED A
TIGHT 12-9 WIN OVER #13 STANDFORD ON FRIDAY A GAME WHERE MEAGHAN
TYRELL PICKED UP RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT OFF LAST SEASON, PUTTING 6
GOALS IN THE BACK OF THE CAGE. AND THEN WHEN BINGHAMTON CAME TO THE
DOME LESS THAN 48 HOURS LATER, EVERYONE GOT INTO THE ACT 11 MEMBERS
OF THE ORANGE SCORED INCLUDING 5 MORE BY TYRRELL AND 4 FROM HER
NAMESAKE MEGAN CARNEY. UP NEXT FOR THE CUSE IS A SHOWDOWN WITH #4
STONY BROOK ON SUNDAY THAT ONE GETS GOING AT 4
A LOCAL GYM IS TEACHING KIDS HOW TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. OUR REPORTER CALVIN MILLINER TALKED TO THE GYM ABOUT THE POWER OF BOXING.
YESTERDAY WAS VALENTINE’S DAY BUT TODAY, THE ONLY LOVE WE’RE SHOWING
IS IN THE RING. I SPOKE WITH CURTIS CHAPLIN, OWNER OF OPTION ZERO SYRACUSE AND LETS JUST SAY HE’S TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. TAKE A LOOK.
BOXING IS A VIOLENT SPORT BUT IT NOT ONLY TEACHES ONE HOW TO DEFEND THEMSELF BUT TEACHES PATIENCE. CURTIS CHAPLIN SEES OPTION ZERO AS A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO CHANNEL CERTAIN ABILITIES.
OUR VISION WITH OPTION ZERO IS TO BE THE JACK OF ALL TRADES. WE CALL IT
A HOLISTIC BOXING FACILITY. EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND MENTAL GROWTH FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
RAIMIER WALKER IS CALLED LUNGZ BECAUSE HE NEVER GETS TIRED. WITH OVER 200 BOUTS, LUNGZ HAS DREAMS OF MAKING IT TO THE TOP. I GOT YOUNGER PEOPLE LOOKING UP TO ME AND PLUS I LOOK UP TO OTHER
BOXERS AND IT MAKES ME WORK HARDER, SO I WANT TO BE WHERE THEY AT ONE DAY.
THE SPACE WAS ONCE A HAIR SALON SO QUITE THE SWITCH UP FOR OPTION ZERO. THE GYM WAS BIRTHED DURING THE PANDEMIC AND IS STILL LOOKING FOR WAYS TO GET ON ITS FEET.
CALVIN MILLINER, MORNINGS ON THE HILL
STAY WITH US–THAT STORY AND MORE JUST AHEAD. WELCOME BACK…
RESTAURANTS AND BARS WERE DEFINITELY HIT HARD WHEN COVID-19 BEGAN IN
2020..
OUR JAMES KATTATO IS LIVE IN STUDIO TO TELL US HOW THE PANDEMIC WAS ACTUALLY A BLESSING IN DISGUISE FOR ONE LOCAL BUSINESS.
MARCUS, MORGAN, THANKS…
THREE LIVES BARCADE IN SYRACUSE IS THE EPITOME OF HAVING FUN ON THE
JOB… BUT THEY BATTLED THROUGH SOME SERIOUS ADVERSITY FROM THE PANDEMIC JUST TO GET BACK TO HAVING THAT FUN.. NOW, THEY’RE BETTER THAN EVER.
LET’S PLAY A GAME
AT THREE LIVES BARCADE IN ARMORY SQUARE… THAT’S WHAT YOU DO.. AND
GAMES ARE THE HEART OF THIS PLACE… FROM THE CUSTOMER LOYALTY
“We call them noobs when they walk in you’re a level one noob every time you visit you’re going to level up.”
ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE DRINKS.
“You can’t go anywhere else and get a health potion. This is the only place you can get a health potion. That’s what makes us unique.”
BUT THREE LIVES OWNER JON PAGE SAYS IT’S TOUGH TO LEVEL UP WHEN YOU
OPEN DURING A PANDEMIC. THEY HAD CUT THINGS BACK TO STRICTLY SERVING FOOD AND DRINKS BECAUSE OF TOO MANY HANDS TOUCHING THE GAMES AND
THE WORRY OF SPREADING GERMS… BUT IT WASN’T ALL BAD. THE VIDEO GAME
INDUSTRY BOOMED WHEN THE PANDEMIC HIT, AND THAT HELPED HIS BUSINESS WHEN THINGS STARTED TO CALM DOWN.
I think that with the pandemic it rose gaming because everyone was home streaming.
WHICH IS ACTUALLY HOW HE PICKED UP HIS BARTENDER…
I assumed you would.
MEET STEPHEN CLARK.. AVID GAMER.. THAT GOT THE JOB BY PLAYING VIDEO GAMES WITH PAGE.
Once it reopened I saw that Jon posted that he needed bartenders and I have experience so I hit him up, sent him my gamertag, said I used to play with you on twitch, so I came in.
We sat down for maybe three minutes and he said okay when can you start.
YOU COULD SAY IT’S DEFINITELY STOLEN THE HEARTS OF SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT WANTED TO TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE AND NOW THEY CAN RELIVE SOME NOSTALGIC MEMORIES FROM THEIR CHILDHOOD.
I’m usually really good at this, but sometimes I need a couple beers to really get it going.
SO WHETHER YOU’VE COLLECTED GAMES YOUR WHOLE LIFE LIKE JAMIE PARKER
The original Atarii, X Box, the sega genesis 80 games in 1, playstation 1 and 2, hooked up to its own tv with a million games. Unbelievable.
So this is like heaven for you basically?
Yeah this is heaven!
Page 3
OR YOU JUST WANTED A REASON TO LEAVE THE HOUSE AND TAKE A TRIP DOWN
MEMORY LANE WITH THE FAMILY LIKE SHANNA DELANEY
Out of these I like the Simpsons. It’s just a fun nostalgic way of remembering being a kid.
IT’S A WAY TO BUILD COMMUNITY AND MERGE THE GAP FROM THEN TO NOW… THREE LIVES JUST HELD THEIR VALENTINES DAY BRUNCH… WHICH THEY SAID WAS A GREAT TURNOUT OVER THE SPAN OF FOUR HOURS… AND PAGE SAYS… THEY’RE STILL GROWING BY THE DAY. THEY HOPE TO EXPAND THEIR SPACE IN YEARS TO COME.
REPORTING IN STUDIO.. JAMES KATTATO. MORNINGS ON THE HILL.
JAMES 3 LIVES DEFINITELY LOOKS LIKE A FUN TIME.
NOW I DON’T KNOW IF YOU ALL REMEMBER THE POPEYES CHICKEN CRAZE OF 20-19, BUT I SURE DO. MORGAN…THAT FIRST CHICKEN SANDWICH WAS HELLA GOOD.
MARCUS THAT WAS INSANE, AND OUR MILES HOOD TOOK TO SYRACUSE
UNIVERSITY TO SEE IF WE COULD BE SEEING THAT IN OUR NEAR FUTURE.
Like a chick becoming a rooster change is inevitable, Marshall St is getting ready to say goodbye to a legend
Akropolis is planning to close its doors and a Popeyes is planning to take its place
I had to get the teams reactions and where their favorite chicken comes from/
IT’S GOING TO BE A CHANGE FOR SURE BUT I KNOW THAT CHICKEN SANDWICH IS GOING TO BE EGG-CELENT
BACK TO Y’ALL
