By Matt Fairfax SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC NEWS) – After approximately a year of cancellations during the pandemic , the Great New York State Fair is not the only event that has returned to the fairgrounds this year.
In the next ten days, the New York State Fairgrounds will host twelve different events. Syracuse Stadium Cross, known for its plethora of dirt bike racing, is one of them.
At the Toyota Coliseum, this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, riders from ages 3-64 will race dirt bikes for cash, trophies, and other awards.
Syracuse Stadium Cross Event Director Rob O’Connor said he could not have dreamed of a better venue for the sixth edition of Syracuse Stadium Cross.
“This facility is perfect because when the weather gets bad outside, we can bring the racing indoors,” O’Connor said. “It’s a great facility. It has the coliseum seating, we can build a really nice track, the dirt is perfect for dirt bikes. So it just makes for a great experience.”
O’Connor said he and his staff are preparing for fans to pack the Toyota Coliseum this weekend after a long break from competitive dirt bike racing.
“We’ve been getting really good feedback on our social media sites,” O’Connor said. “So yeah, I think everyone is eager to get back, watch the races, and be part of something like this.”
O’Connor also said motocross racing is ultimately a family event that builds community and brings people from different backgrounds together.
“Racing is exciting, you know the loud noises, the jumps, the crashes,” O’Connor said. “But it’s really all about the people that come to race and meeting up with them again, and having a good time.”
A half-marathon, antique shows, a theatre pipe organ concert, indoor motocross, and more are scheduled at the New York State Fairgrounds in the next 10 days.
