SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NCC News) ––The New York State Fair will return this year after cancelling last year due to Covid-19. However, a staple amongst fairgoers will not return, the Interstate-690 Red Light.
With this removal, the traffic will decrease as drivers will be directed towards eastbound 690 and through the $38 million ramp to the Fairgrounds area and newly built Orange parking lot.
The State Department of Transportation played a big part in these construction plans, creating the on-ramp bridge to help people walk with ease, and creating at least a thousand new parking lot spaces.
“With the coming State Fair, we expect that new bridge from the Orange lot to get full use as people leave the fair this year. ” said Curtis Jetter, Assistant to the Director for the New York State Dot Regional Office.
Jetter described how effective the new construction projects will be for fairgoers this year, including the newly built bridges for pedestrians to use to enter and exit the Fair.
“Because the State Fair was cancelled last year, the bridge really hasn’t been put into full use at this point,” said Jetter.
In the past during this time of the year, the traffic through 690 became one of the handful of scheduled traffic controls in the country. Now with traffic redirecting another way, fairgoers should be able to enjoy their time at the Fairgrounds better than ever now.
The I-690 traffic nightmares are no more, as the Fairgrounds have improved construction and made decisions for fairgoers to easily enter and exit.
