National Grid Forecasts Lower Heating Bills, Residents Are Skeptical National Grid Forecasts Lower Heating Bills, Residents Are Skeptical

WITH ALL THE HOT WATER, HOLIDAY DECORATIONS, AND HAVING
TO DRIVE ALMOST EVERYWHERE – WINTER IN CENTRAL NEW YORK
CAN GET EXPENSIVE… BUT ONE BILL PROJECTED TO BE LOWER FOR
C-N-Y RESIDENTS THIS YEAR IS THEIR HEATING BILL… NATIONAL
GRID SAYS…
For gas that’s about a $30 drop over the winter heating season
which is until November through March and for the heating side it
means a monthly average drop between 6 to 8 dollars.
IT MAY NOT SOUND LIKE MUCH – BUT A THIRTY DOLLAR DROP IS
MUCH BETTER THAN LAST YEAR’S PREDICTIONS – WHEN HEATING BILLS INCREASED.
NATIONAL GRID SAYS SAVING MONEY CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS
TURNING YOUR THERMOSTAT DOWN, ESPECIALLY WHEN NO ONE
IS HOME- HOWEVER SOME RESIDENTS SAY THIS DOES VERY LITTLE
WHEN IT COMES TO THE HEATING BILL.
I guess I’ll believe it when I see it.
We try to do all the energy efficient things and it’s still costing
more each winter than they say it should.. and that’s for a one-floor
apartment. Imagine what the typical household in Syracuse is going
through with two floors and a family, you know a real family.
LAST YEAR, NATIONAL GRID PREDICTED THE AVERAGE
HOUSEHOLD TO SPEND FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE
DOLLARS ON HEATING DURING THE WINTER – BUT THIS RESIDENT
SPENT CLOSER TO SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS…
Their definition of the winter is silly. They say it’s from November
1st to March 31st. We’ve started our heating in mid-october.
SO WHILE THE NATIONAL GRID FORECAST SOUNDS LIKE GOOD
NEWS… ONLY TIME WILL TELL IF RESIDENTS WILL ACTUALLY SEE
SAVINGS… IN SYRACUSE, I’M REBEKAH CASTOR, N-C-C NEWS.

By Rebekah Castor (Syracuse, N.Y.) — Heating your home could be cheaper this year. According to National Grid, upstate New York customers can expect lower natural gas and electricity bills this winter.

“The wholesale price of these commodities is going down,” National Grid spokesperson , Virginia Limmiatis said.

National Grid is predicting heating bills to go down by 6.9%. Customers can expect to save $5.67 per month, translating to a savings of $24.34 for the winter. The average household is predicted to spend about $500 between the months of November and March.

National Grid’s Heating Forecast predicts lower bills for CNY

John Bruckner, National Grid’s New York President, reminds customers to continue to use energy wisely to help lower your bill even more. He suggests using ENERGY STAR® light bulbs, turning off any item that uses electricity when not in use, and using cold water while washing clothes.

I spoke with several CNY residents asking them what they think of this year’s heating forecast. Many aren’t sure whether to believe it.

“Almost all of their statistics should have asterisks next to them,” Connor Federico of Syracuse said. “Last year I was charged over $100 more than national grid originally predicted. They have a monopoly up here and they know it.”

Whether bills will actually be lower or not, National Grid still provides payment plans for customers unable to pay in full. Households receiving public assistance may also qualify for the federal Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides financial aid.

“Pride stands in the way of people calling us to let us know they’re having trouble paying their bills,” Limmiatis said. “We want people to call us.”
