Frank Salerno: Good afternoon Syracuse today is September 23, 2020, I’m Frank Salerno and this is your NCC News Brief.

New York stayed below a 1% COVID-19 infection rate, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today. Onondaga County reported 17 new positive cases of its own.

As for Syracuse University, today the school reported 1 new active case on campus. The number of overall active cases currently sits at 30, three less cases overall than Monday’s report. This is coming off a recent round of University wide testing that took place starting on September 8th.

The body of Ruth Bader Ginsburg lies in repose outside the US Supreme Court today. Ginsburg was visited by the public, and other notable political figures such as Bill and Hillary Clinton..

Chief Justice John Roberts spoke on Ginsburg’s impact this afternoon.

John Roberts: “Her 483 majority concurring and dissenting opinions will steer the court for decades. They are written with the unaffected grace of precision. Her voice in court and in our conference room was soft. But when she spoke, people listened.”

Salerno: On Friday, the associate justice will become the first woman ever to lie in state at the US Capitol building.

Syracuse City Schools are set to begin hybrid-in person classes on October 5th and there are concerns the district is not ready to open. SYRACUSE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT BILL SCOTT told NCC News today that if the schools are not 100% ready by next Wednesday, they will not be able to work in October.

And the Syracuse Men’s Soccer has cancelled its season opener against Navy on Friday after a member of the Orange tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The student-athletes are now in quarantine in accordance with New York State and CDC protocol.
