Michael Gross: Hello and welcome to the NCC News Podcast. I’m Michael Gross.
Kennedy Houston: And I’m Kennedy Houston. Today is Thursday, June 1st.
Gross: The top stories we’re following today at NCC News are mostly weather related, and we start in hurricane season.
Houston: June 1st marks the start of the hurricane season, as well as the start of meteorological summer. Meteorologist Michael Kistner says, we’re still a ways away from the peak of the season, but it’s important to monitor.
Kistner: As we see that ocean water start to warm up towards the later end of the summer, that’s when we really start to see that hurricane and tropical activity pick up.
Gross: A New York State Climatologist and Atmospheric Sciences professor at Cornell says The upcoming stretch of hot weather could lead to an increase in wildfires. The State Department of Environmental Conservation has declared the entire state now at high risk due to intense heat.
Houston: Well, speaking of intense heat, let’s bring in Matt Kibby to give us today’s forecast and what’s to come.
Matthew Kibby: Well, the heat isn’t going anywhere. A record high of 93 degrees is expected today. The previous record on June 1st was 91 degrees set all the way back in 1999, and honestly, that 93 degree temperature, probably hot enough to cook an egg out on the sidewalk. You’re gonna wanna make sure you have your sunscreen today. If you do go outside, the UV index sits around 8.1. Looking towards the future tomorrow. Temperatures stay in the nineties before cooling back off on Saturday with a chance of some much needed showers in the area. And on Sunday the weekend rounds out with 70 degree weather.
Houston: Matt, thank you.
Gross: More than 30,000 Wizard of Oz fans will be in Chittenango on Saturday for Oz-Stravaganza starting at 2:00 PM A parade and Festival will commence during the longest running annual OZ festival in the country. One of the biggest stories in Syracuse has to do with sports. For that, let’s bring in Jeremy Striano. Jeremy, thank you for being with us.
Jeremy Striano: Thank you, Michael. Appreciate it.
Gross: Tell me what’s going on with Le Moyne College Athletics and their move to division one.
Striano: Well, after speaking with athletic director Bob Beretta, it’s clear now that the Le Moyne Dolphins will be transitioning into Division One and into the Northeast Conference. After speaking with him, it was a process that was almost immediate from his hiring back in 2021, so it looks promising for the Dolphins in all sports.
Gross: How much success do you think they’ll have in the future?
Striano: I think a lot, Michael, when you look at their programs like men’s lacrosse, like men’s and women’s basketball, you see a lot of promise even with baseball as well. So entering a new conference might just be a saving grace for the Le Moyne Dolphins.
Gross: Well, hopefully they’ll have, uh, a lot of success moving on, Jeremy. Thank you.
Striano: Thanks Michael. Appreciate it.
Gross: That’s all for now. For additional information on these stories and more, be sure to check out the NCC News online website
