ANDREW MACBEATH: Welcome to the NCC News Podcast and happy Flag Day and Rose Day. We’re your hosts. I’m Andrew Macbeth.
ISABEL FLORES: And I’m Isabel Flores.
MACBEATH:And here are a few of today’s stories from the NCC News broadcast.
FLORES:A local ice cream shop keeps its doors open despite a labor shortage.
MACBEATH:And a new soccer skills camp emerges in the city of Syracuse.
FLORES:First for today’s forecast, here’s Michael Villegas.
MICHAEL VILLEGAS: Today’s forecast is some light showers sprinkled all throughout the day. That’ll go in through the night tomorrow, should ease up on it, but then again, Friday, some more light showers and scattered showers around the area. And then throughout the weekend a little bit as well with some nice sunshine for the weekend. So hopefully some people can get some outside time.
FLORES:Thank you, Michael. Now, you also talked with the owner of the ice cream shop. What is the scoop on this business and what keeps them going?
VILLEGAS: So just like any other business, Amanda Hughes, the owner of the ice cream stand, figures that she struggles through just any normal business things, but for her, it’s the worker shortage. But what keeps her motivated, what keeps her going is being a role model to the next generation as a female business owner. She has a bloodline of being a business owner and is her core. And her father was actually a restaurant owner and her mother actually ran a catering company as well. So it’s in her blood to run a food industry and being a female role model for younger females down the road.
AMANDA HUGHES: I see young women and even little kids come in and just to see me here and to have their parents interact with me and say like, oh, she’s the owner, and have them witness that it’s really so much bigger.
MACBEATH:Thank you, Michael. Next we have Gabe Carr Johnson who visited this new soccer skills camp. Gabe, what makes this camp so special for the community?
GABE CARR-JOHNSON: I think it’s important because this kid went to 9:00 AM high school. Went on to play four years at Keuka College. Came back and now he’s the coach of Nottingham High School as well. And he just wants to improve on this, all the skills for the people of the city of Syracuse. Said he didn’t have that when he was growing up and he would like to do that for the future generations.
CLAUDE TUYISHIMIRE: I was just thinking about like, if I had this kind of resources and someone, a mentor to guide me through the process, I think it would, you know, it would’ve been a different story. So I wanted to be, Somebody.
FLORES: Thank you, Gabe. That is all we have for today. For more information on today’s stories, visit the NCC News online website.
